The KHSAA Boys’ Sweet Sixteen® is scheduled for March 6-10 at Rupp Arena in Lexington.

IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING FRIDAY-SATURDAY SESSIONS OF THE BOYS’ SWEET 16®
With the University of Kentucky playing Florida on Saturday afternoon, the KHSAA will be required to completely break down its setup for the Boys’ Sweet 16® following the last game on Friday evening. Media members in attendance at the 8 p.m. game on Friday, March 8 will need to clear the arena floor as soon as possible, and relocate to the Media Workroom. The remodeled work area has plenty of power and dedicated internet connections and will allow for reporters to take as long as necessary to compile information and submit to your outlets. No equipment can be left on the arena floor or tables following the last game on Friday night as even the press tables will be almost immediately removed by the Rupp Arena staff to allow for UK and network television setup. Accommodations have been made by the KHSAA and Rupp Arena to secure a storage area where media members can leave their equipment overnight. The area will be monitored 24-7 by a security guard. Following the conclusion of the UK-Florida game, the arena will remain closed to the media and the public until 4:30 p.m. so that the Rupp Arena and KHSAA staff can prepare the arena for the Saturday evening session.

TIME CHANGE NOTE
Please note that the spring change from Standard Time to Daily Savings Time occurs on Sunday, March 10.

At its meeting last week, the KHSAA Board of Control approved a staff recommendation to give teams in three-team districts options as to the scheduling of required games. Three-team districts in baseball, basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball will continue to be seeded by rule. However, the districts will decide (by majority vote) if they play each other twice, or once during regular season.

For districts that play only once, the only conceivable tie is a three-way tie with each team having a 1-1 record. If that is the case, the district shall be decided by blind draw of those three teams, with the first team drawn being the number one seed.

For districts that play twice each year, the system (including tiebreakers) remains the same as it is in 2012-2013.

As districts conduct meetings to decide scheduling and site selection plan options for next year and beyond, discussion should include these decisions as well for all that are aligned in a three-team district. District managers will report the information on KHSAA Form GE54. Discussion should also be held for those that are in a four-team district, in the event that it is felt the viability of one of the teams is in question. Should a four-team district drop to a three-team district due to the loss of a team during the season, the district would automatically become seeded and it is imperative to have made the one or two game decision prior to that time.

Below is listed the formal wording of the rule within the revised competition rules.

For district tournaments with three teams, the district tournament shall be seeded in accordance with the following three-team seeding rules:
Through the conclusion of the 2012-2013 school year, teams in three-team districts shall play each other twice during the regular season, with provisions and tie-breakers listed below. Beginning in 2013-2014, the competing teams within a district shall, by majority vote prior to the start of the regular season, determine if the schools are required to play each other once or twice during the regular season. These games will produce a uniform means of ranking the teams by seed within these districts.

The team with the highest seed (one seed) receives a bye in the district tournament, and advances to the championship game.

The remaining two teams would play in the first round of the district tournament with the loser of that game being eliminated.

In the case of a two-way tie for the district winning position, the tie-breaking mechanisms (in order) shall be:
In districts that have decided to play each other only once in district play, the winner in the game played between the tied district opponents would have the higher finishing position.

In districts that have decided to play each other twice in district play, the winner in the second game played between the tied district opponents would have the higher finishing position.

In the case of a three-way tie for the district winning position, the tie would be resolved in the following manner. If any of the tie-breakers results in one of the teams being ahead of the other two, the tie is broken. If any of the tie-breakers result in two teams remaining ahead of the third, then the two-way tie breaker shall be used to determine the winner between those two.

In districts that have decided to play each other only once in district play, the tie shall be broken by blind draw. The team drawn first in the draw shall be considered the highest seed (one seed).

In districts that have decided to play each other twice in district play, the tie-breaking mechanisms (in order) shall be:
If the tie remains between all three teams, the record in the second game played against all district opponents involved in the tie.

If the tie remains between all three teams, the record in the first game played against all district opponents involved in the tie.

If the tie remains between all three teams, then the total points allowed in all seeded games shall be the next tie-breaker.

If the tie remains between all three teams, then the total points allowed in the second of each of the seeded games shall be the next tie-breaker.

If the tie is still unbreakable, then a blind draw among the three teams shall break the tie. In this case, the team drawn first in the draw shall be considered the highest seed (one seed)

Additional tie-breaking mechanisms could be added, and would be uniform for all three-team districts.

In the event of game re-scheduling or cancellation, the original game schedule shall determine which game is “second” for tie-breaking purposes.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: SEPTEMBER 17, 2012

DISQUALIFICATIONS DOWN IN 2011-2012 SCHOOL YEAR
More student-athletes and coaches were able to see the conclusion of their teams’ contests during the 2011-2012 school year.

A total of 481 student-athletes and coaches were disqualified from contests in the sports of baseball, basketball, football, soccer, softball, volleyball and wrestling last year, down from 545 during the 2010-2011 school year. The information was released during the KHSAA Board of Control Meeting on Monday in Lexington.

Before the 2011-2012 school year the KHSAA Board of Control approved measures stiffening the disqualification to two contests for student-athletes and three for coaches.

“I don’t think there’s any question the stiffer penalties had something to do with the fewer number of disqualifications we have seen,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “Especially in sports such as football, where three games can mean nearly a third of the season, more coaches and student-athletes are stopping to think before they act. If they are doing that, it means the penalties are doing exactly what they are designed to do. Everyone, student-athletes and coaches, must do everything they can to promote good sportsmanship. Boorish behavior and poor sportsmanship have no place and simply will not be tolerated.”

A complete listing of disqualifications by sport, with comparisons to the 2010-2011 school year.

Sport 2011-2012 2010-2011

                                                                  Player Coach Player Coach

Baseball 48 35 96 39

Basketball 91 30 71 29

Football 114 3 118 7

Soccer 224 22 248 34

Softball 3 19 5 19

Volleyball 1 0 0 0

Wrestling 0 0 7 1

Totals 481 109 545 129

BOARD CONFIRMS POLICY ON CROSS GENDER PARTICIPATION
The KHSAA Board of Control approved a written policy that reaffirms the Association’s historic policy regarding opposite sex sports male and female student-athletes.

Males may not participate as part of a female only team for any reason.
