09/23/19- KHSAA and Midway University Expand Student-Athlete Awards Program

2019-2020 News Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 23, 2019

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association and Midway University are expanding their partnership in the Midway University/KHSAA Student-Athlete of the Year Awards program to include recognition for males beginning in the fall of 2019. The program originally began in the spring of 2016 as a way for Midway University to honor female student-athletes, and will now include male and female student-athletes for all KHSAA-sanctioned sports and sport-activities.

“We value our partnership with the KHSAA as we expand our on-campus offerings to include male students and male sports and look forward to continuing to get our message out across the Commonwealth to even more student-athletes and potential students,” said Midway University President John P. Marsden, Ph.D.

“It is exciting to expand our relationship with Midway University to coincide with its own expansion of sports offerings,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “This was already a tremendous partnership through its effort to […]

06/27/19 – Assisting Injured Athletes, Expansion of Exchange Zones Among Rules Changes in Track and Field/Cross Country

Athletic Department Blog Updates

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (June 27, 2019) — The expansion of exchange zones in short relay events, which does not require tracks to be repainted/resurfaced, as well as assisting injured athletes, are among the rules changes for high school track and field and cross country.

Seven rules changes were recommended by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Track and Field and Cross Country Rules Committee at its June 10-12 meeting in Indianapolis, and all changes were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

The first change amends notes in Rule 4 (Competitors and Competition) and Rule 8 (Cross Country) which reads, “A competitor who provides assistance to an injured or ill competitor should not be disqualified if neither the individual competitor providing the assistance nor his/her team gains an advantage as a result of providing the assistance.”

“Previous changes to the NFHS rules created the exception that allows a competitor to assist an […]

05/07/19 – Track & Field Regional Entries for Unified & Adapted Athletes

Track and Field Blog Updates

In preparation for the 2019 KHSAA State Track & Field Championships (May 30-June 1), we wanted to remind you of the opportunities available for the student-athletes of Kentucky. The KHSAA will continue to offer Unified and Adapted events to include regional and state track & field competitions. While most unified and/or adapted athletes have been participating throughout the season, it is important to review the following information prior to the start of the postseason.

Unified partner athletes and special athletes must be listed on the Unified roster in the KHSAA database and each school needs to check the box for a Unified Team if they wish to compete in the regional and/or state competition. The track & field head coach or Athletic Director for each participating member school should enter Unified student-athletes on its postseason roster on the KHSAA database for Unified track prior to the deadline for entries.

From that postseason roster, coaches can […]

04/03/19 – Pole Vault Coaches Certification

Track and Field Blog Updates

As a reminder, Athletic Directors have the ability to designate a Pole Vault coach within the KHSAA database. This capability has greatly enhanced the ability to manage provisions within the rules, in particular, those related to Track and Field. For the 2019 season:

  • Member schools must have a designated coach with the proper training (NFHS or PVSCB) to enter Pole Vault competitors in regular AND postseason competition.
  • Please be sure to check the KHSAA database and ensure that if you are going to enter vaulters in meets, you have a coach designated as the Pole Vault Coach (under positions/roles after you define them as head or assistant coaches).
  • On the Track and Field website, under General Information, KHSAA will have a link to listings of completed coaches for both PVSCB and NFHS training.

04/03/19 – Reminders – Pole Vault Requirements for Track Coaches

Track and Field Blog Updates

We wanted to remind Athletic Directors, coaches, and student-athletes about the additional requirements for the Pole Vault event. It is necessary in order to attempt to minimize risk, that coaches have additional training for the pole vault prior to athletes being able to enter a competition.

Coaches entering vaulters have long been required to complete an online education course specific to pole vault.

For 2019, there are two options for coaches to complete, and both count equally toward the requirement.

09/25/18 – Board of Control Addresses Future Championship Formats and Schedules in Several Sports

2018-2019 News Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 25, 2018

The Board of Control conducted its first meeting of the 2018-19 academic year on Thursday, September 20 at the Association offices. Much of the day’s agenda involved ongoing discussion of the future format of several KHSAA championships. Among the action taken, the Board gave tentative approval to transitioning the State Softball and Baseball Tournaments to 8-team single elimination events, with the key provision of re-establishing semi-state play, preferably at non-high school sites. This builds upon last year’s decision to move away from the double-elimination format in Softball, in the interest of player safety and gender participation experience equity.

The tentative plan would transition these championships to 8-team events with first round, semi-state games, rotated in geographic pods and played at a neutral site. The Commissioner and staff were directed to develop site criteria for semi-state games for review at October’s Board meeting, with the goal to […]

06/07/17 – Approved Draft Realignment- Track & Field and Cross Country for 2017-18 through 2020-2021

Track and Field Blog Updates

APPROVED DRAFT TRACK AND FIELD ALIGNMENT – 2017-18 to 2020-21 – DISTRIBUTED TO MEMBERSHIP JUNE 2017

ITALICIZED SCHOOLS participate in Cross Country Only (did not participate in Track and Field) per 2016-2017 information submitted by member school personnel. Comments will be accepted from the membership through 4 p.m. July 6, 2017.

Schools were divided following ranking the four-year average enrollment of track schools, with 40% of the schools placed in 1A, 30% in 2A, 30% in 1A. Cross Country-only schools were added following division. Due to fluctuating participation numbers, an exact balance between regions in both Track and Cross Country is not likely attainable and the existing basketball region boundaries were used where there were multiple options.

05/20/17 – Track and Field 3A State Meet Interrupted/Terminated Due To Weather

2016-2017 News Releases

Statement of the Commissioner’s Office Regarding Class 3A Track and Field Meet Suspension and Termination

At approximately 9:05 p.m. Friday, May 20, 2017 inclement weather (primarily a lightning storm) surrounding the UK Outdoor Track & Field Complex compelled meet management to interrupt the Class 3A meet. The meet was stopped and the facility was evacuated in the interest of safety, and in compliance with KHSAA policies and procedures, due to lightning. At that time, five heats were remaining in the 4×400 relays, as one heat of the girls’ 4×400 had been conducted and the runners for the second heat were in the starting blocks. In addition, the girls’ triple jump was stopped with the top two individuals shy of their sixth jump. NFHS Rule 3-2-5 states that a meet may be suspended by the games committee, in collaboration with the referee, due to an emergency such as hazardous weather conditions or power failure. For the […]

05/17/17 – State Track & Field Roll-up

Track and Field Blog Updates

As an experiment for 2017, the KHSAA asked coaches to notify the Association when they desired to scratch an athlete from an event during the State Meet. This originally came as a request from the members of the Commissioner’s Track and Field/Cross Country Advisory committee to lessen the number of empty lanes at the State Meet. The process is under review and will be evaluated to determine its feasibility for the future. Below describes the procedure for implementing this request for 2017. This procedure was implemented today (Wednesday) based on scratches received by midnight on Tuesday.

The size and scope of the State Meet mean that the procedure has to be narrowly focused and able to be implemented in a streamlined fashion, especially given the myriad of tasks being accomplished this week in preparation.

Below describes the procedure for implementing this request for 2017.

  • If a state qualifier was scratched from an event, the coach of the […]

02/02/17 – Further Clarification on Track Meet Participation

Track and Field Blog Updates

To further clarify the rules and regulations involving participation in indoor or outdoor track meets, we want to ensure our coaches are aware of the limitations when entering meets.

  • Schools that choose to enter athletes in a meet under the school name (or in the case where meets allow schools to enter as a school and a member chooses to do so) cannot compete against schools or teams located in Kentucky who are eligible to join the KHSAA but have decided not to do so at this time;
  • There are no restrictions regarding competition against out-of-state non-member schools or competition against out-of-state entities of other structures, as that is a local school decision;
  • If schools have athletes entering a meet, even as unattached or unaffiliated individuals, it is the school’s responsibility to understand the Bylaw 23 restrictions (Limitation of Seasons) and who the athletes are competing against;

01/11/17 – Reminders about Participation in Indoor Track Meets

Track and Field Blog Updates

For the past several years, groups and institutions like the University of Kentucky have sponsored indoor track meets. At UK for example, one meet has historically been conducted for Kentucky high schools in January and a second meet in February was an open meet with non-member teams from out-of-state and a variety of athletes and teams. Because of the way that the February meet was structured, there were previously specific limitations on KHSAA school-based participation, especially against non-member teams.

Because of recent bylaw changes in regulations, the only teams that are prohibited from competing against KHSAA member schools are schools or groups of athletes located in Kentucky who are eligible to join the KHSAA, but have decided not to do so at this time. There are no longer restrictions against out-of-state non-member schools or competition against out-of-state entities of other structures, as that is a local school decision.

It is important to note that indoor track and field is not […]

08/29/14 – Track Corresponding Dates

Track and Field Blog Updates

We have had a few inquiries about the dates for postseason track. Last season the board approved a two week period for regionals to be held due to a change in the NFHS calendar and a scheduling issue with the state host facility.

We will again schedule a two week period to complete the regional competition. The two week period seemed to be beneficial to schools for many reasons, but mostly the benefit of scheduling around May school scheduling conflicts was expressed.  It also allowed schools to be more confident with rescheduling due to weather related issues.

Please take a look at the corresonding dates calendar from the KHSAA handbook posted on the khsaa.org website – http://khsaa.org/handbook/correspondingdates/trackcorrespondingdates.pdf

The last asterisk denotes the two weeks possible for track regional competition.

There will no longer be a waiver to run a meet once the regional meet has run.

08/16/14 – Reminder about Carryover Ejections from 2013-2014

Athletic Department Blog Updates

In several unfortunate situations each year, coaches or athletes with eligibility remaining are ejected near the end of the season, or near the end of the season for violations of Bylaw 15, Sportsmanships. Please note that when that happens, the penalty carries to the next year if the student-athlete remains enrolled, and to the new school if the coach changes jobs/schools.

Please note all rules related to player/coach ejections, including the provisions for varsity and non-varsity ejections, are listed at http://khsaa.org/dq-policy-on-reinstatement-of-disqualified-apolicy-on-reinstatement-of-disqualified-athletes-coaches/, and a complete list from 2013-2014 is listed on the KHSAA website at http://khsaa.org/dq_list_public/. You will need to review this listing to ensure that you properly require athletes and coaches to miss the required contests if in fact they were ejected.

Also note that being ineligible for scrimmages (sitting out) does NOT satisfy any penalty, such must be served at the varsity contest level.

If you have specific questions, please contact Michael Barren (mbarren@khsaa.org) […]

04/28/14 – Clarification on Last Date for Track Meets Counting Toward Postseason Requirement

Track and Field Blog Updates

This blog has been updated as of 4/28/14 at 4:07pm – The correction is highlighted below.

Allowing two weeks to host the regional track meets has exposed a piece in the regional instructions that needs to be clarified for this season and future years.

A meet shall count toward the 4 meet requirement as long as it occurs on the last day before the regional and results are posted to the milesplit.com website.    Competition rules do allow for meets to be held and count toward the 4 meet minimum requirement after the entry deadline, but those times or marks will not count for seeding purposes.

For example:  If your school’s regional meet is to take place on Saturday, May 10th, the last day to count a meet toward the requirement of four meets for regional competition is Friday, May 9th, but any meets held after Tuesday, May 6th cannot be […]

03-27-14 Cold Weather Statement for Baseball, Softball and Track

Athletic Department Blog Updates

Due to the ongoing cold temperatures, we have received several inquiries regarding postponing/canceling contests due to cold weather.

Prior to the officials assuming authority (jurisdiction) per the playing rules, it is the decision of home game management to determine whether or not a contest should be canceled or postponed due to cold temperatures. This decision should be made in consultation with all involved schools, but is ultimately the decision of the home team administration.

After a contest has started, or the officials have otherwise assumed authority per the playing rules, contest officials after consulting with coaches and home game management, shall determine whether play should be postponed or canceled.

There are rules contained in the Board of Control adopted policies in Section 32 (on page 34), relative to the payment of umpires/officials should the contest be postponed http://khsaa.org/handbook/20132014/policies.pdf.

11/21/13 – Changes to Track Site Selection Plan

Athletic Department Blog Updates

After fantastic feedback on the Cross Country Super Regionals and a great crowd and weather at the state Cross Country meet, we feel it is time to catch everyone up on what has been going on behind the scenes in regards to track regional sites.

Schools received a notice from the Commissioner after the last Board of Control meeting explaining possible regional dates and a waiver for possible competition after a regional (in case you missed it choose this link http://khsaa.org/111313-revision-in-track-and-field-season-2014-only/).  Additionally the Commissioner and I have spoken with many of you with regard to hosting multiple track regions at a like single site.  We recognize that not all of the pieces of the puzzle were fitting as nicely as they did for Cross Country and took a second look at host sites.

As you know, the KHSAA Commissioner is ultimately responsible for choosing all sports postseason sites, but we ask our […]

11/13/13- Revision in Track and Field Season, 2014 ONLY

Athletic Department Blog Updates

At the November 11, 2013 meeting, the KHSAA Board of Control approved an allowance for Track and Field teams for the 2014 season only, to allow normal “regular season” meets to be run AFTER the regional meets, provided these regular season meets are held on or prior to May 17 and provided no school competes in more than 19 meets (not including the region and state). This allowance is further explained below, and is a situation specific to 2014 due to the likely involvement of more than fifty percent of the licensed Track and Field officials as the University of Kentucky hosts the SEC Outdoor championships on May 15-17, 2014.

In July, 2013 the Board approved a staff request to adjust the date of the 2014 regional and state track meets. This was done due to major scheduling conflicts with one weekend in May (originally reported as May 8-10, later confirmed as May 15-17), and also […]

08/28/13 – XC and TR Regional Host Form, Changes, and Information

Athletic Department Blog Updates

With the new alignment in Track and Cross Country came the opportunity to make adjustments to our postseason (regional) competitions. Managing 21 sites (3 classes and 7 regions) continued to have complications, including but not limited to, collection of identified host sites and the accuracy of those site plans, quality courses, facilities and equipment, supplying official to all sites, inspections of all courses and tracks, and year to year host schools cancellations and coaching (meet management) changes. Though not all of these issues plagued all regions, some of these issues caused problems in most regions.    In an earlier post, we displayed a two year plan (draft). We were mostly concerned with this coming year. The 2013-2014 cross country sites only require one change at this time. This change will be made and posted as soon as confirmed. We ask that any other school that may be unable to host this season contact […]

08/05/13 XC and Track Regional Sites Selected

Athletic Department Blog Updates

With the new track and field alignment comes additional changes.  As schools know all postseason sites are set by the KHSAA for all sports.  The new alignment gave the KHSAA an opportunity to coordinate the post season assignments differently than in the past for both Cross Country and Track and Field.

A concern for all schools has been the facilities and courses.  Those concerns range from equipment such as pole vault and discuss venues, to timing equipment and appropriate amount of parking.  Another important aspect of hosting is the experience of meet management and the ability to provide an adequate number of workers and volunteers to make a meet successful.  Providing the top officials to ensure the absolute best experience possible for the student athletes in our communities is also a goal.

To address these issues, the KHSAA has designated the host schools for both Cross Country and Track and Field for the next two […]

New Track/XC Alignment Approved; Football Draft Alignments To Begin; Commissioner Receives Extremely Favorable Evaluation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: JULY 23, 2013

The Board of Control conducted its July meeting on Monday at the Bank of Kentucky Center on the campus of Northern Kentucky University. Among the various topics addressed was the finalizing of a new alignment for Track and Field/Cross Country for the upcoming 2013-14 season.

Following months of review, a survey of the member schools, and consideration of all of the suggested amendments, the Board of Control adopted a revised alignment for Track & Field/Cross Country to take effect for postseason competition in the fall of 2013. Originally, a draft alignment was developed which would have minimized differences in enrollment between the largest and smallest schools in Class 1A and Class 3A. APPROVED ALIGNMENT OF TEAMS, 2013-2014 CROSS COUNTRY AND TRACK

The Board of Control conducted its July meeting on Monday at the Bank of Kentucky Center on the campus of Northern Kentucky University.

However, the feedback from the membership was more favorable to the current system of dividing the schools, as the draft would have resulted in extremely large regions in Class 2A or additional regions.

Following consideration, the Board left the dividing line between Class 1A and 2A at 610 students (as with the old alignment), and raised the line […]

07/11/13 Track Season Date Changes Pending

Athletic Department Blog Updates

Over the past months, staff has spent quite a bit of time reviewing future plans in Track and Field. We were very concerned about the fact that due to natural calendar rollover situations, the track season was going to be shortened in 2014 and 2015. This, coming on the heels of the movement of the region and state competitions a couple of years ago due to testing, forced us to examine the entire season and its parameters.

Regardless of state venue, which has not yet been set, the staff at the KHSAA has identified several issues regarding both the original dates and potential alternative dates for the track and field postseason.

  • The University of Kentucky is hosting an SEC meet the weekend currently set for the high school regional weekend.  Because so many of our officials are collegiate caliber and beyond officials, this conflict would prohibit the KHSAA from providing the highest quality […]
