Information on Becoming an Official

The KHSAA is ALWAYS looking for men and women who want to return something to their school and community by becoming a licensed athletic official. Candidates should be at least 18 years old, a high school graduate, in good physical condition, and able
to make decisions on their feet and stick to them.

We currently license officials in 9 different sports: baseball, basketball, football, soccer, softball (fast pitch), swimming and diving, track and field, volleyball, and wrestling.

To become an official, you’ll need to fill out an application, pay a licensing fee, and take an open-book rules test. Once you are licensed, you’ll need to attend annual rules meeting that will introduce you to the latest rule changes and interpretations
and become an active member of a local officials’ association.

KHSAA Sportsmanship Statement

The National High School Federation and your state association require officials to enforce sportsmanship rules. High school athletics emphasize positive values. All of us have worked hard to create a sense of teamwork, respect, responsibility and perspective.
We remind you that we expect good behavior and will quickly penalize misconduct. We encourage and appreciate your help. Let this competition reflect mutual respect among all participants and officials. Coaches please certify that your players are legally
equipped and uniformed according to NFHS rules. Good luck and have a great contest!

KHSAA Sportsmanship PA Announcement

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association requires officials to enforce sportsmanship rules for athletes and coaches. We will not tolerate negative statements or actions between opposing players, especially trash-talking, taunting or baiting of opponents.
If such comments are heard or actions seen, a penalty will be assessed immediately. We have been instructed not to issue warnings. Let today’s contest reflect mutual respect.
