FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INDIANAPOLIS – State high school associations may adopt rules permitting the use of backstroke ledges during swimming competitions starting in the 2025-26 school year.

Rule 2-7-3 was approved by the NFHS Swimming and Diving Rules Committee during its annual meeting last March at The Alexander in downtown Indianapolis. All recommended changes were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

The new, permissive rule allows backstroke ledges in pools that maintain a 6-foot water depth, measured from the starting end wall to at least 16 feet, 5 inches (5 meters) from the end wall. It also specifies the acceptable dimensions for the ledges.

Under Rule 2-7-3, if backstroke ledges are used in a competition, identical ledges must be provided by the host team for all lanes. All girls’ swimming and diving events will now take place on Friday, February 21, and all boys’ swimming and diving events on Saturday, February 22. Adjustments were made to the time schedule to ensure that athletes are not swimming earlier than originally scheduled on Friday or Saturday than the original schedule.

The girls’ and boys’ swimming prelims have no changes to the time schedule between events. Be advised that the gender-specific diving competition has been adjusted to fit between the swimming prelims and finals, which did alter the swimming finals start times to a slightly later time. While this may result in facility attendance issues, we believe that in the end, the schedule adjustments will work to accommodate all involved.

The KHSAA Board of Control conducted its fifth regularly scheduled meeting of the 2024-25 academic year on Wednesday in Lexington, approving the authorization for the Commissioner to work with staff to plan potential site adjustments to state championship events in the sports of baseball, tennis and swimming & diving due to facility schedule or construction conflicts.

With the threat of potential inclement weather forecasted across the state this weekend, it was necessary to adjust the format and site schedule for the 2025 KHSAA Swimming & Diving State Championships at the Lancaster Aquatic Center on the University of Kentucky campus in Lexington.

“Safety of the student-athletes, coaches, families and others has to always be a paramount concern,” said Commissioner Julian Tackett. “With the current storm, coupled with transportation issues around last weekend’s flooding and the prospect for additional bad weather tonight, we will condense our three-day state swimming & diving [...]]]> 02/19/25 – KHSAA State Diving Finals Postponed https://khsaa.org/02-19-25-khsaa-state-diving-finals-postponed/ Wed, 19 Feb 2025 17:51:29 +0000 https://khsaa.org/?p=73190 IMPORTANT NOTICE TO MEMBER SCHOOLS AND SWIMMING/DIVING PARTICIPANTS

Due to the strong likelihood of additional inclement weather, multiple school closures, and potentially more hazardous traveling conditions, there have been adjustments to the remaining schedule for the KHSAA Swimming & Diving State Finals Championships. The safety of participants, coaches, administrators and parents remains the primary concern around decisions of this type.

The Diving Championships that were originally scheduled for Thursday, February 20, have been postponed, and KHSAA staff is working to adjust the time schedules to incorporate the gender-specific diving competition within the original scheduled times. Participating schools can plan all girls’ diving and swimming events on Friday, February 21, and all boys’ diving and swimming events on Saturday, February 22.

A revised time schedule for Friday and Saturday and additional information will be posted as soon as possible and additional notification is forthcoming. “We have been blessed with tremendous growth since the bass fishing tournament first began in 2013,” said Commissioner Julian Tackett. “The fact that multiple entities are interested in hosting this championship is a testament to the great work of our schools, student-athletes and coaches, as well as our long-time partners at Major League Fishing. The 2023-24 Midway University/KHSAA Student-Athlete of the Year awards program culminated Tuesday on the campus of Midway University, as Carlie Thurmond of Bethlehem (Soccer) and Max Germann of Boyle County (Track & Field) were recognized as the overall Student-Athletes of the Year.

Beginning in May 2016, Midway has presented a Female Student-Athlete of the Year award at each KHSAA girls’ state championship event. The awards program was expanded in 2019-20 to include male student-athletes, with Midway honoring a deserving student-athlete in each KHSAA sport and sport-activity.

The awards are based on athletic and academic achievement, as well as community service and leadership, with Midway choosing one overall Male and Female Student-Athlete of the Year each academic year. School administrators, coaches and athletic directors nominate student-athletes, and the nominees are voted upon by a closed panel consisting of representatives from Midway.

This will be the second year utilizing a three-round state format to continue efforts to grow participation throughout the state and resolve other logistical issues at postseason venues including reduced deck space and seating capacities.

This movement to an earlier starting date will further enable local options for start dates of the postseason and lessen potential conflicts with prospective state first-round and finals sites. This also addresses some expressed concerns regarding the intensity of postseason competition rounds and the desire to have additional time between those state rounds. This change in dates also necessitates an adjustment in the starting date for swimming meets in order to afford schools the previously adopted season length.

However, due to several cancellations last weekend as a result of inclement weather, it may be more challenging through no fault of the competitors, to meet that requirement.

As a result, for the 2023-24 season, the four (4) minimum number of Diving meets to enter the postseason is reduced to three (3) meets, all of which must be while representing a member school. Upon entering divers into the Regional Championship, the coach and athletic director of the member school are required to certify that all divers and diving alternates have participated in the required meets.
