WELCOME

Welcome to the Kentucky Fair & Exposition Center and Cardinal Stadium for the 1998 KHSAA State Football Championships. Since 1979, Cardinal Stadium has been home to the four state championship games. We hope you enjoy this weekend's exciting action as four state champions will be crowned. Should you need any assistance, please notify Butch Cope (KHSAA SID) or any other member of the Championship Event Staff.

PRESS BOX RULES

This reminder that the press box, radio booths, photo decks and field press areas are for working media only. No cheering will be tolerated and spouses/children are not allowed in the press box or on the photo deck.

FOOTBALL CREDENTIALS

Credentials to the State Football Championships are issued to working media only. All credentials are granted to particular outlets and are non-transferable. Please don't risk losing future privileges to KHSAA State Championship events by transferring your credential, particularly to high school coaches.

POSTGAME PROCEDURES

As in the past, there will be no interview room or interview sessions. Coaches will be brought to their sideline at the 40-yard line (closest to their dressing room) to conduct any interviews. This will allow the field to be cleared in preparation for trophy presentations. Player interviews should be conducted on the SIDELINES off of the playing field, FOLLOWING trophy presentations.

PHOTOGRAPHERS/VIDEOGRAPHERS

Photographers/Videographers are reminded to REMAIN OUT OF THE TEAM BOX AREA (30-yard line to 30-yard line) and to remain at least five yards back from the "out-of-bounds" marks. Anyone with a field press pass or press box pass without a camera will be asked to remain behind the roped area on the sidelines. Only working photographers should be in front of the roped areas.

POSTGAME RESULTS

Results will be available in a timely fashion and passed out in the main press box (Room 201) to working media following each contest. Marty Jaggers, Josh's dad, coached Lincoln County to a runner-up finish in the 1993 Class AAA State Championship game. Josh's grandfather is the state's all-time winningest coach in Joe Jaggers at North Hardin. Jaggers most recently coached in the 1990 State Championship when he guided Ft. Knox to the Class AA championship.

Defeated previously unbeaten Bowling Green 28-27 to advance to the championship game, snapping Bowling Green's 26-game winning streak.

Waggener is making its second appearance in the State Football Finals. The Cats only other appearance was in 1963 when they finished runner-up to Male in the Class AAA Championship.

Waggener ranked sixth in the final AP regular season poll behind Highlands, Bowling Green, Paducah Tilghman, Bell Co. and Oldham Co.

The Cats are on a six-game winning streak. Their last loss was a wild 62-60 overtime affair at Valley earlier in the year.

A high-powered offense has scored 50-plus points in five of the 14 games for Coach Ken Hockman.

Waggener ranked second in the state to Highlands (56.7) in scoring average during the regular season, posting 47.5 ppg. The Cats were also sixth in scoring margin at 31.7 in the regular season.

A successful passing team, the Cats ranked seventh in the regular season in passing yards-per-game with 218.5 and currently average 217.6 on the the year.

Greg Kannapel leads the passing game for Waggener and ranked ninth in the state in yards-per-game in the regular season with 206.7 ypg. Kannapel currently averages 208.9 and needs just 76 more yards to eclipse the 3,000-mark for the year.

Waggener has a balanced attack on offense with a running game that includes two 1,000-yard rushers. D.J. Kamer has 1,366 yards and 30 touchdowns on 159 attempts while teammate Djuan Means has 1,188 yards and 13 touchdowns on 119 carries.

Corterris Reese, one of the state's top receivers, has 73 receptions on the year for 1,498 yards and 18 touchdowns. Reese needs just 89 more yards to break the state mark for reception yards in a season set by Paintsville's Jeremiah Akers this season. His 73 receptions on the year rank 10th among state leaders. Jason Reynolds holds the state mark with 96 catches in 1994 for Bullitt East.

Reese had 11 receptions for 245 yards in the win over Bowling Green in the semifinals. Kannapel threw for 375 yards in the contest.

Highlands defeated Sheldon Clark 44-28 on the road last weekend to advance to its 17th State Championship appearance. Highlands has a record of 12-4 in the state finals and is currently tied with Trinity for most state football titles.

With a win, the 1998 Bluebirds would become the school's seventh team to go undefeated. If they accomplish the feat, the seven undefeated teams would rank second in the state record book to Male's 10 undefeated squads.

Highlands defeated Hopkinsville, 21-14, in its last appearance in the State Finals in the 1996 Class AAA Championship.

The Birds are on a 14-game winning streak. Their last loss was a 41-35 double-overtime loss at home to Covington Catholic in the quarterfinals of last year's playoffs.

Highlands was ranked No. 1 in the final AP regular season poll.

Coach Dale Mueller's squad has scored 50-plus points in an amazing 8 of 14 games, including a whopping 72 points against Scott.

The 745 points scored this year by Highlands ranks tops in the state for points in a season. The high-powered offense was fourth in the state in the regular season, averaging 272.3 passing yards-per-game.

Highlands is outscoring its opponents 53.2-14.0 on the year and 44.5 to 16.0 in the playoffs.

Kicker Brennan Jones needs just six more PATs to set a national record for PAT in a season. Jones had six last week against Sheldon Clark to up his total to 82. The national record is 87, set by Drew Hagan from Amory, MS, in 1995.

Brian Ulbricht leads the ground game with 1,023 yards and 15 touchdowns on 104 attempts.

Quaterback Jared Lorenzen has thrown for over 3,000 yards on the year with 3,381 yards and 45 touchdowns, while completing 166 of 264 passes. His 3,381 yards rank sixth in the state for passing yards in a season. He has 6,810 career passing yards (9th) and 89 career touchdown completions (4th).

Derek Smith is one of Lorenzen's favorite targets with 44 receptions for 1,058 yards and 19 touchdowns this year. Nate Binkley has 40 receptions for 799 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Lorenzen has passed for 300-plus yards three times this season, including a 365-yard effort and five touchdowns against Scott. In that contest, Smith had 11 receptions for 304 yards including five TD receptions.

Lorenzen was fourth in the state in the regular season in passing yards per game with 257.6.

Male enters the Class AAAA State Finals after posting a 20-14 win over Nelson County last weekend in the semifinals, also played at the Ky. Fair & Expo Center's Cardinal Stadium.

The Dogs are making their fifth appearance in the State Football Championships and sport a perfect 4-0 record in prior appearances. Male last played in the State Championship in 1993, when it defeated Shelby County 29-7 for the Class AAAA title.

The Bulldogs have won their last nine games. Their last loss was a 40-33 overtime loss at the hands of Ballard.

Male finished the regular season ranked third in the Associated Press poll behind Nelson County and Tates Creek.

The Bulldogs ranked seventh in the regular season in points-per-game with a 43.3 average. In the playoffs, Male has outscored opponents 97-33 (24.3-8.3).

With a high-octane passing game, the Bulldogs led the state in passing yards-per-game in the regular season with a 309.0 average. On the year, the Dogs are averaging 282.4 ypg.

Gerry Ahrens quarterbacks the successful passing game for Coach Redman's squad. Ahrens is in just his third year at quarterback and only played four games at the position his first (sophomore) year. He led the state in the regular season in yards-per-game (288.3).

Ahrens has passed for 3,721 yards this season and is just 196 yards away from breaking Tim Couch's record for yards passing in a season (3,916) set in 1995 for Leslie County.

Ahrens is hot on the heels of some other Couch state passing marks. With 268 pass completions on the year, he needs just 18 more to eclipse Couch's state-record 285 set in 1995. He also is currently ahead of Couch's state career passing percentage record, having connected on 531 of 835 passes for a 63.6 completion percentage. Couch completed 875 of 1,375 for a 63.5 percentage.

Ahrens' 6,796 career passing yards rank 10th, just behind Highlands' Jared Lorenzen's 6,810.

Montrell Jones has been Ahrens' favorite target, having caught 69 passes for 1,231 yards and 15 touchdowns on the year.

As a team, Male has already set a state record for passing yards in a season with 3,953, breaking Leslie County's mark of 3,944 set in 1995. Male needs just 23 passing attempts to break the season state record of 470 and five completions to break the state record of 287, both set in 1995 by Leslie County.

Ahrens threw for 417 yards and six touchdowns earlier in the year against DuPont Manual. He also had six touchdowns pass completions against Doss.

Another favorite receiver of Ahrens is Trent Findley. Findley has 51 receptions for 816 yards and 8 touchdowns on the year, including a 15 pass-reception-performance in the Manual contest.

The Commdores are making their third appearance in the State Football Championships following a 37-14 win over last year's Class 4A State Runner-Up Trinity.

The Creek is 1-1 in the state finals, with the 1972 team going undefeated in capturing the Class AA title. The Creek was runner-up to St. Xavier in the 1978 Class AAAA championship in its only other championship game appearance.

Tates Creek is riding a 14-game winning streak. The Commodores last loss was a 14-12 decision to Campbell County in the first round of last year's playoffs.

The Commodores were ranked No. 1 in the final regular season AP poll.

A strong running game and a tough defense are why the 'Dores are one game away from a perfect season and a state title. Tates Creek fifth in the state in scoring in the regular season at 44.7 ppg. and eighth in scoring defense, allowing opponents just 9.3 ppg. For the year, The Creekers average 39.6 ppg. while giving up just 8.6 (28.0 to 6.8 in playoff games).

Tates Creek was ninth in the state in rushing yards-per-game in the regular season with a 313.4 average. Leading the pack for The Creek was Mian Smith. Smith has run for 1,898 yards and 30 touchdowns this season on 264 carries.
