REIDLAND'S LOYD REPEATS AS GOLF CHAMPION
RICHMOND -- Reidland's Susan Loyd continued her dominance at the girls' state golf championships, capturing her second-consecutive individual state title at the 34th KHSAA Girls' State Golf Championship played at Arlington Country Club.
For the second consecutive year Loyd fired a lower score in the second round than in her opening round to come from behind to capture the win. Loyd trailed North Hardin's Tara Hawkins and Woodford County's Katie Osborne by one stroke after Tuesday's opening round. The defending Ms. Golf recipient turned in a six-over 78 Tuesday, but improved with a one-over 73 to finish at 151. Hawkins and Osborne, both carding 77 in the opening round, each fired 83 to finish 160.
Glasgow's Whitney Wade defeated Montgomery County's Stephanie Baskey in a two-hole playoff for second.
Loyd becomes only the sixth golfer in the 34-year history of the event to repeat as champion, first since Henry Clay's Lisa Weissmueller accomplished the feat in 1988-89. Loyd was runner-up in 1995 to Heath's Jenny Throgmorton.
In the team competition, Glasgow captured its first state golf title, 26 shots better than two-time defending state champion Franklin County and Somerset. Glasgow improved 20 strokes in the final round to finish at 664. Franklin County defeated Somerset in a one-hole playoff for second after both had finished the tournament tied at 690.
