Nominee's Accomplishments at the High School Level in Kentucky:
John was the co-captain and MVP for the Hopkinsville TIgers 1966 2A State Championship team that finished 13-0; that team finished #1 in Kentucky polls and #4 in the United States. John was a RB and OLB, playing both ways. He was All-WKC, AP All-State, CJ All-State, LHL All-State, All Southern Team and All-American. He finished the 1966 season with 15 TDs and 1326 rushing yards (averaging 5.9 yards per carry). Coach Fleming Thornton, KHSAA HOF member said this about John. "He was a bull dozer. He was the hardest running back for his size I guess that we've ever had." John signed a football scholarship to Vanderbilt University, after being recruited by Alabama, Kentucky and many others. John, as a junior, was also a starting RB and OLB for the Hopkinsville Tigers 1965 2A State Championship that finished 14-0. The 1965 HHS team finished as #16 in the nation. John was recently a part of the Inaugural Class inducted into the Hopkinsville High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
