Nominee's Accomplishments at the High School Level in Kentucky:
As a freshman, we started Jim at shortstop on our varsity team. Quickly, we all saw how valuable of a teammate he was. He contributed to the success of our team just in his first year. As a sophomore, Jim developed into one of our most talented players and worked his way to the top of the batting order. Jim was recruited by multiple regional summer league teams, where he played with talented college and professional recruits, who were two-three years older than him. As a junior, Jim was named captain of the team and played every position we needed him to fill. Jim’s batting average that year was 598. Jim was named to the All-Region Team (1977). As a senior (1978), Jim was recognized as one of the top players in the Cincinnati area and maintained a batting average of 693. Jim was drafted by the Montreal Expos straight out of high school. Jim had multiple offers from Division 1 colleges but chose to go to Northern Kentucky University on a baseball scholarship to stay close to his elderly mother. In my opinion, Jim is the best baseball player that has ever represented Newport High School. Any coach or official in that era would agree that Jim made his mark playing baseball in the Greater Cincinnati area. It was an honor to be his coach for four years. I followed his career through college and was proud of how he represented our school and baseball program. Jim has sponsored and coached many youth athletic teams over the last 20 years to give back to give back to the community and share his knowledge.
