QUALIFICATIONS: Certification by the Kentucky Department of Education or a degree in Sports Management; ten (10) years of successful leadership experience; or such alternative as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable
REPORTS TO: Principals, SUPERVISES: Student Services Assistants and all secondary coaches (feeder middle school and high school)
JOB GOAL(S): To provide each high school and middle student an opportunity to participate in extracurricular athletic activities that will foster physical skills, a sense of worth and competence, a knowledge and understanding of the pleasures of the sport, and the principles of fair play. To supervise all athletics at the secondary (middle and high school) level to assure these programs function under the guidelines of the KHSAA and that policies/procedures are strictly followed.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Organize and administer the overall program of interscholastic/intramural athletics for the high school pursuant to Board and KHSAA policies. Coordinate the feeder middle school athletic program and oversee the middle school program. Direct the middle school Student Services Assistant. Work with the principals on recruiting and recommending to the Superintendent the employment and assignment of athletic coaches for middle school and high school. Provide information to all head coaches (middle school and high school) annually on district expectations, district hiring process of coaches and volunteers and provide required trainings. Foster good school/community relations by keeping the community aware of and responsive to the extra-curricular and co-curricular programs. Assume responsibility for the organization and scheduling of all extra-curricular events at the high school and middle school.
Responsible for supervision at after school extra-curricular activities as designated by principal, oversee middle school plan for the same. Coordinate the securing of game officials. Contact law enforcement officers/team physician for all athletic contests and activities. Supervise all athletic facilities and recommends needed maintenance and repairs. For the high school and middle school, coordinate and approve field and gym practice schedules for all athletic teams. Coordinate/schedule non-school use of playing fields and athletic facilities.
Coordinate, with coaches, transportation for extra-curricular and co-curricular participants. Responsible to file with district central staff all transportation requests pursuant to Board policy. Develop, with approval of the principal, appropriate rules and regulations governing the conduct of teams and coaches pursuant to Shelby County Board of Education policies and SBDM policies.
Responsible to enforce physical and academic requirements of eligibility for participation in each sport and verifies each athleteâ��s eligibility, consistent with Council, Board and KHSAA rules.
Supervise coaches in preparation of an activity budget to be approved by the principal and School Based Decision Making (SBDM) Council. Shall confer monthly with the principals as to the status of all athletic accounts as reported in the monthly school activity financial report.
Shall oversee and follow Board policy in securing insurance, physicals, supplies and equipment for athletic teams at the middle and high school.
Responsible to work with visiting teams to insure needed services and secures from the visiting team information for programs, etc.
Coordinate records keeping and results of all high school athletic contests and maintain a record file of all award winners, stating the date and type of award, including athletic scholarships. Oversee the same at the middle school.
Work closely with athletic booster groups to interpret and promote school policy and philosophy as it applies to the functions for the booster groups through attendance at all booster club meetings.
Shall be responsible for evaluating extra-curricular programs, when requested by principal. Formal evaluation reports shall be submitted to the principal upon completion of coaching duties each year.
Work with principals, School Based Decision Making Councils and coaching staffs in the evaluation of the success of each program and set goals for improvement for the following year.
Coordinate and supervise all ticket and concession sales at athletic events; all school vending sales; and assume responsibility for proper handling of money pursuant to Board and Kentucky Department of Education regulations.
Assist staff, students and parents in developing a positive school climate.
Adhere to professional code of ethics as established by Education Professional Standards Board. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by principals or Superintendent.
