Nominee's Accomplishments at the High School Level in Kentucky:
Billy pitched for Ashland High School from 1964-66 compiling a 27-2 record. He allowed nine earned runs in three seasons. His e.r.a. as a junior was 0.41; as a senior in 1966 it was 0.31. He might be the most dominating pitcher in Kentucky High School history. In 1966 he struck out 150 in 66 2/3 innings. In 1965, as a junior, he struck out 97 and allowed three runs in 53 innings. He averaged two strikeouts per inning for his career. In the 1966 state tournament, which Ashland won, Billy pitched a complete game in the quarterfinals and four innings of relief in the semi-finals. In those 11 innings, he allowed one hit, one run and struck out 29. (29Ks of 33 outs in the state tournament.) Billy got the Tomcats to the championships game which his brother pitched with Billy waiting in the bullpen. Billy hit .649 as a junior, but hitting stats are missing for four games. He hit .386 as a senior. He was selected Kentucky High School Baseball Player of the Year by the Associated Press. After he declined the offer of a full scholarship at the University of Kentucky, Cleveland made Billy the 32nd pick of the 1966 MLB draft. After the draft, Syd Thrift of the Pirates called the Lynch family and apologized for the Pirates failure to select Bill earlier in the draft. An arm injury derailed his professional career, but as I understand the guidelines, selection to the Hall is based on an individual's high school performance. His high school career wasn't a fluke. He also pitched Ashland to state championships in Little League, Babe Ruth League and American Legion baseball. He is a man of high morale character. From:Mueller Nomination As a pitcher for Paul Blazer HS, Billy Lynch had a career record of 27-2 including a spotless 11-0 senior season with a 0.31 ERA and 150 K’s as a part of the 25-0 State Championship team in 1966. That year, the Associated Press named him the High School Player of the Year for 1966 and he was drafted with the 32nd overall pick in the 1966 MLB Draft by the Cleveland Indians.
