9/28/23- Wrestling Class Survey Issued for Member Schools

As authorized by the Board of Control through the Commissioner’s office, member schools are requested to respond to two surveys regarding wrestling weight classes for girls’ competitions. Bylaw 22, Sec. 5 of the KHSAA Bylaws requires the Association expressly to use NFHS playing rules in sports for which those rules are written and the KHSAA sponsors a championship. Therefore, the events cannot by rule be run in the manner that prior events were run, including the past events managed by KWCA, with a hybrid set of weight classes and the KHSAA must conform to NFHS rules. The survey must be received by the close of business on October 12, 2023.

SURVEY VOTE ONE

The first survey requests the Designated Representative (per Bylaw 1) of each wrestling school to select between 12, 13 and 14 weight classes. A preliminary survey in 2021 has 35 schools select 12 weight classes, 33 select 14 weight classes and 11 schools select 13 weight classes for girls competition. 

In the three years of competition for females since that time, much feedback has been received regarding this choice for the now-officially sanctioned state championship tournament. But this feedback has not been uniform across the state and therefore, a membership survey is being conducted for this first year of implementation.

This survey will ask for the use of 12, 13 or 14 weight classes in postseason competition.

SURVEY VOTE TWO

In addition, schools are being asked for sentiment regarding the use of boys’ weight classes for both boys’/coed competition, and all-female competition. The choice of using the boys’ numbers would raise the lowest weight class (regardless of the number of classes selected), and would also raise the weights at the top of the weight class as well.

Using the boys’ weight classes would have the classes divided at

• 12 Weight Classes – 108, 116, 124, 131, 138, 145, 152, 160, 170, 190, 215, 285
• 13 Weight Classes – 107, 114, 121, 127, 133, 139, 145, 152, 160, 172, 189, 215, 285
• 14 Weight Classes – 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 144, 150, 157, 165, 175, 190, 215, 285

Using the girls’ weight classes would have the classes divided at :

• 12 Weight Classes – 100, 107, 114, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 165, 185, 235.
• 13 Weight Classes – 100, 106, 112, 118, 124, 130, 136, 142, 148, 155, 170, 190, 235.
• 14 Weight Classes – 100, 105, 110, 115, 120, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 155, 170, 190, 235.

PROCESS

These two surveys require two separate votes by the schools using the Board of Control election system. The links to vote are on the KHSAA school subdomain at https://ly.khsaa.org/tkna. Though not required, designated representatives may want to talk to the wrestling coaches at your school prior to submitting these surveys.

Only one vote per school will be accepted and it may only come from the Principal or Designated Representative.

All surveys are due prior to the close of business on October 12, 2023.
