Throughout this school year, the Board of Control Team Sports Committee has been conducting discussions and working with staff on finalizing a draft alignment of schools for the 2015 through 2018 playing seasons. The Board has authorized me to release a draft of schools divided into districts for play during the 2015 through 2018 seasons.

All of the information relative to the realignment is located at http://khsaa.org/football-alignmentrealignment-information/. Select the 2015-2018 alignment/realignment menu to review maps and other related data. The draft alignment is listed at http://khsaa.org/041514-football-draft-alignment-of-teams-2015-2018/

Let me give you a brief summary of the Board’s discussions and where things stand as of now:

  1. Scheduling Moratorium: Contracts signed prior to May 12, 2014 for the 2015 playing season and beyond are not to be considered valid. Schools are to hold off scheduling until the final alignment is approved.
  2. Board Next Steps: The alignment will be made final following a comment period by the schools, at the Board’s May 12, 2014 meeting in Lexington.
  3. Scheduling Grid: The scheduling grid will remain in place as revised (and listed on the realignment website). Written permission will be required to deviate from the grid.
  4. Term of the alignment: The alignment term will be for 2015-2016 through 2018-2019 school years.
  5. Enrollment Figures: The four-year average enrollment figures for 2013-2014, 2012-2013, 2011-2012, 2010-2011 (number of boys, grades 9-12 plus special education) were used to place schools in classes.
  6. Mid-Alignment Adjustment: There will be a review of alignments after the first two years with potential adjustments in class based on schools having a significant change (increase or decrease) in average boys enrollment, and such change placing a school below or above class bounds.
  7. Schools desiring to play-up: These decisions were finalized in March at the Board of Control meeting.
  8. Membership Feedback: Member schools wishing to file written commentary on the alignment should do so by completing the survey at the link listed on the email annoucement on or before the close of business on Monday, May 5 to be considered by the Board of Control. Identified problems should be accompanied by a workable solution.

As always, member school Principals or Designated Representatives should feel free to contact the office if you have any questions.
