Now that staff has a clearer direction, plans can move forward with communication and details with managers, hosts and member schools.
Attendance restrictions in place statewide for indoor venues necessitated a change for the 2021 wrestling postseason. In order to maintain the participation entries without any decrease, the Board approved a recommendation from staff to host the State Championships over the course of two weekends. The regional tournaments will now be held the week of March 8th. Four wrestlers from each weight class (no alternates) will advance from the region to the semi-state round, with two regions competing at each site (1/2, 3/4, 5/6, and 7/8).
The semi-state round will be conducted as a full-wrestleback (consolation) format in each weight class, seeded by TrackWrestling data and criteria following regions. The top-two from each weight class at each semi-state site will then advance to the final state round, to be held the week of March 22. The final state site will be seeded using TrackWrestling/FloSports data, and each school will carry its team points acquired during the semi-state round forward to factor into the team standings. No changes in individual awards have been made.
Staff is working with potential regional and semi-state sites and hope to publish those venues soon. Additional information will be published on the KHSAA website as sites and details are completed and in the postseason instructions manual as well.
