01/24/24- Spring Esports Online Rules Clinic for Coaches Now Available

The online KHSAA Rules Clinic for the spring sport activity of Esports is now available.  This clinic is required of all coaches (varsity, junior varsity, and freshman, paid or unpaid).

FOR ATHLETIC DIRECTORS

I cannot stress this enough:  though your student-athletes and coaches have to be loaded into and be active in PlayVS’ system in order to play the games, they have to be loaded into the KHSAA online roster and coaching databases to be eligible to play the games.  Just like any other KHSAA sport or sport activity and for both the regular and postseason.  So please make certain all of your student-athletes and coaches are loaded into the KHSAA Online System as soon as possible. 

I found out in the fall when I compared both the number of athletes and coaches in PlayVS’ system vs. the KHSAA system and found quite a few discrepancies that I had to get school admins to clean up once the season started. 

Additionally, ensure that all of your coaches’ email addresses are correct so they will receive reminder emails about this clinic when it approaches the paid periods listed in the schedule below.

FOR COACHES
The clinic is located on your School Portal Log-in Page. To access the clinic, go to https://schools.khsaa.org/ and — under the section entitled Rules Clinics — click on the link that says “View Online Rules Clinics“.

SCHEDULE

• Through March 14  – the clinic may be viewed at no charge during this period. 
• March 15 through March 29 – the clinic may be viewed for a makeup fee of $100.
• March 30 through April 13 – the clinic may be viewed for a makeup fee of $200.  After this time, postseason restrictions and penalties per Bylaw 27 will apply.

First Year Coaches are not required to pay the late fee, but this must be waived in advance of them taking the rules clinic by me.  Each school’s Athletic Director will need to contact me directly if this is the case.

Additional notes concerning the clinic:

• Each person who views the clinic must be logged into their own KHSAA account in order to get credit. If taken using anyone else’s username other than your own (including your administrator’s), you will have to re-take the clinic as you essentially just took it for them.
• The clinic can be viewed on nearly any device (system requirements are listed above).
• You do not have to start and finish the module in one session.  You can exit the module at any time by clicking on the “Exit Module” link that is located on the upper left-hand corner of the presentation, or by simply closing the browser tab.  When you return to the clinic, you will be asked if you want to resume or not.
  • NOTE: Even though you do not have to watch in one sitting, you cannot simply leave the module running with a slide displayed when you are away for an extended period of time as you run the risk of not receiving credit.  Be sure and exit properly if you have to do something else.
• There is no certificate for online rules clinics.  Coaches, your athletic director will have full visibility of whether or not you have started and finished a module.
• The slides must be advanced one at a time, manually using the player controls.  At any time you can go back to review slides you have already viewed, but you can never skip slides you have not viewed.
• You will be presented with a few questions throughout that must be answered before you can proceed.
• If you would like to review this presentation after you have received credit, please contact me and I will send you an ‘unlocked” non-credit link which has no viewing restrictions and therefore allows you to skip ahead.

If you are a coach and have trouble logging into the system, contact your athletic director to ensure your email address is properly entered into the system and if problems persist and a fellow member of the coaching staff is unable to help you, contact the KHSAA office.
