08/21/25 – Volleyball Season Updates and Reminders
PrintNow that the first week of the 2025 girls’ volleyball season is coming to an end, we wanted to provide these updates based on early questions that have come to the office, as well as a clarification from the NFHS. These reminders will also apply to the boys’ 2026 season.
BALL SHAGGING BY OPPONENTS
This was a Point of Emphasis last year from the NFHS that dealt with sportsmanship. Opposing teams were asked not to shag balls during warm-ups. After a year review and consultation from the NFHS, our office has been advised that this practice is recommended should there be sportsmanship issues.
We had and still have, during the first week of the 2025 season, regions where it had been adhered to and where it was ignored. From here forward, it will be a local issue. Should it be deemed a sportsmanship issue, then it should be recognized; otherwise, the Association has no issue with the opposing team shagging balls during warm-ups.
WARM-UP TIME
Please remember, as approved by the Board, at the varsity level, the warm-up time is 4-5-5-1.
4:00-Shared Court
5:00-Receiving Team
5:00-Serving team
1:00-Team Benches
This schedule CANNOT be altered locally at the varsity level. Times at the non-varsity level may be adopted, but schools should advise opponents in advance of any non-varsity warm-up time alterations. The standard match scores for non-varsity remain unchanged.
TEAM BENCHES
This has been a constant issue each year. The NFHS playing rule states that no team bench members are permitted to stand during play other than the head coach. We continue to see some regions that simply do not enforce this, while others do. It creates issues when teams from outside the region play each other. While it may be permitted at other levels, the NFHS rules must be recognized by coaches and enforced by officials, including assigning secretaries.
JEWLERY
It is the responsibility of the head coach to ensure that players are legally equipped, including jewelry.
All jewelry shall be removed, except small, secured jewelry (stud or post). No jewelry shall be permitted below the chin. String bracelets, commemorative bracelets, and body jewelry are considered jewelry and are not permitted.
Taping over jewelry is not permitted.
a. A medical alert shall be taped to the body, and the alert may be visible.
b. Religious medals and/or other religious items shall be taped to the body
and worn under the uniform.
Players shall not wear body paint or glitter on their hair, face, uniform, or body.
Thanks to all Assigners, Officials, and Coaches for your efforts as our 2025 season gets into full swing.
