01/16/17 – Board Approves 2018 Volleyball Dates/Alignment Changes

The KHSAA Board of Control recently approved a change in the dates for the 2018 State Volleyball postseason (2018-19 school year), along with alignment changes in the 13th and 15th regions.  

The city of Louisville will be hosting the Breeders’ Cup races at Churchill Downs November 2-3, 2018.  With housing expected to be at a premium due to the conflict, staff worked with the Volleyball Advisory Committee, Louisville Convention & Visitor’s Bureau and Jefferson County Public Schools to adjust the postseason schedule. The Board approved a one-year adjustment to the postseason schedule as follows:
First Practice – July 15, 2018 (no change)
First Contest – August 13, 2018 (no change)
Last Date to Play Seeded Contest – Wed., Oct. 3, 2018
District Tournament – October 8-13, 2018
Regional Tournaments – October 15-20, 2018
State Tournament – Valley High School (Louisville), Oct. 26-28, 2018

Dates for the 2017 State Tournament remain Nov. 3-5.

With Pineville adding varsity play in 2016, the Board adjusted the 13th Region volleyball alignment to mirror the basketball alignment, as has been done in other regions. Beginning in 2017-18, the 13th Region alignment will be as follows:
REGION 13
District 49 – Clay County, Jackson County, North Laurel, Oneida Baptist Institute, Red Bird Christian
District 50 – Corbin, South Laurel, Whitley County
District 51 – Barbourville, Knox Central, Lynn Camp, Pineville
District 52 – Bell County, Harlan, Harlan County, Middlesboro

With the consolidation of South Floyd and Allen Central to form Floyd Central, there was a review of the 15th Region Alignment in basketball, including baseball, softball and volleyball. Superintendents expressed an interest in a multi-year pilot program where their teams would play one less regular season game, and then play a modified regional tournament with an extra round. This would result in all teams advancing from the district tournament to the region tournament in those sports, but seeded by regular season play, rankings, voting or other methods to be worked out in future meetings with those schools.

Following the approval of the regional tournament format, the Board finalized a new alignment for the 15th Region for the 2017-18 season with the impending addition of Floyd Central, which will see Jenkins move into the 15th Region.
