As the summer comes to a close, the KHSAA wanted to remind Athletic Directors, coaches, student-athletes, and parents about Bylaw 9, which has been in place for many years. Bylaw 9 restricts student-athletes in basketball and football, who after enrolling in grade nine (9) and have subsequently been a contestant in either sport at some level, from playing in outside competition once the school year begins and until the end of the season. This bylaw places a restriction on nonschool athletic participation in an attempt to protect students who choose to participate on their school’s athletic teams from exploitation by those who seek to capitalize on their skill and/or reputation.

Recent changes in the bylaw do allow permissible competition by student-athletes across the Commonwealth. Please make yourself comfortable with the bylaw and read it in its entirety here: https://khsaa.org/handbook/bylaws/20172018/bylaw9.pdf. The bylaw outlines what is permissible for student-athletes.

Please contact Asst. Commissioner Darren Bilberry (dbilberry@khsaa.org) if you have any questions.
