Pairings Set For Volleyball, Soccer Championships

The KHSAA conducted its annual draw shows for volleyball and boys’ and girls’ soccer at its headquarters on Monday afternoon. An archived copy of the show, which was streamed live online, is available at KHSAA.org.

The KHSAA Soccer State Championships begin with the Boys’ Semi-State round on Monday, Oct. 28, followed by the Girls’ Semi-State games on Tuesday, Oct. 29 – all of which will be played on campus sites. The tournaments move to Lexington following the Semi-State round. Quarterfinal action takes place on Saturday, Nov. 2, with Lafayette hosting the girls’ games and Henry Clay hosting the boys’ contests. The Semifinals and Finals will be played at Paul Laurence Dunbar, with the boys’ games on Wednesday, Nov. 6 and the girls’ matches on Thursday, Nov. 7. Both championship bouts will be played on Saturday, Nov. 9, with the boys’ game at 5 p.m. and the girls’ title match at 7 p.m.

The KHSAA Volleyball State Championship will be held Nov. 8-10 at Valley High School in Louisville. This year’s event will move to a three-day format, with the championship match played on Sunday. First round matches will be played on Friday, Nov. 8, followed by Quarterfinal and Semifinal action on Saturday, Nov. 9.

West Jessamine, Sacred Heart Claim First State Titles of the Year

The West Jessamine boys’ golf and the Sacred Heart girls’ golf teams took home the first state championships of the 2013-14 season last week at the 2013 Leachman Buick•GMC•Cadillac/KHSAA Golf Championships at the Bowling Green Country Club.

West Jessamine finished at 14-over par 590 (293-297) for the event to earn a seven-stroke victory over second-place St. Xavier (296-301 – 597). The Colts were led by senior Fred Allen Meyer, who used a pair of 68’s to finish at eight-under par 136 and capture his second-straight individual state title. St. X’s Brendon Doyle took second with a five-under par 139 total (69-70).

On the girls’ side, Sacred Heart posted a 39-over par 615 (307-308) to win its third-straight team title. The Valkyries trailed Calloway County by six strokes at the end of the first round, but rallied on day two behind the play of junior Maddie Hamilton, who finished in a tie for second place at one-over par 145 (70-75). West Jessamine swept the individual medalist honors, as senior Grace Rose finished atop the leader board with a two-under par 142 total, including a five-under par 67 in the first round.
