The 19th Annual KHSAA HYPE Student Leadership Conferences will be held this week at the Lexington Convention Center (Aug. 29-30). The conferences are a free service provided by the Association for student-athletes to learn teamwork exercises and sportsmanship initiatives, and discuss current issues.

The first conference will be held Thursday, Aug. 29 in the Bluegrass Ballroom at the Lexington Convention Center, with the second session taking place the following day (Friday, Aug. 30). Assisting with this year’s conference will be a group of four student-athletes that represented the KHSAA at the NFHS National Student Leadership Summit in July: Hannah Eastes (Fort Campbell), Mick Clines (Bishop Brossart), Lindey Lipe (Muhlenberg County) and Marcus Hay (Fort Campbell). In addition to helping facilitate this year’s conference, the group will help plan the 2020 HYPE Student Leadership Conference.

Topics for this year’s breakout sessions include seminars on Brain Mapping and Goal Setting (Omari Pearson, Passion to Purpose), Team Building (Kara Mattingly and Trent Ellsworth, Asbury University) and Relationship Building & Maintenance (Deb Hult, Core Trainings). This year’s keynote speaker will be Harvey Alston (“Be the Best”).

“We are one of about thirty states that conduct a similar student conference, but one of only a handful that provides the service free of charge,” said Associate Commissioner Butch Cope. “Based upon input from our student-advisory group, we try to plan a conference that allows students to take back practices and information to use at the local level.”

The conference is free to attendees and primarily funded with the receipts from the Association’s corporate sponsor program, including corporate partners Musco Sports Lighting, the Kentucky Coaches Association, and the NFHS Foundation. More than 500 student-athletes attended the two-day session last year. The 2019 HYPE Student Leadership Conference marks the ninth summit since the event was split into two meetings to better accommodate students across the Commonwealth.
