06/27/24 – NFHS Announces Baseball Playing Rule Changes

2023-2024 News Releases

Risk Minimization and Sportsmanship Addressed in 2025 Baseball Rules Changes

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INDIANAPOLIS – High school baseball players using non-wood bats will have greater flexibility in using substances to enhance their grip on the bat with a change that brings consistency to Rule 1-3-2.

This rule revision was one of two proposed by the NFHS Baseball Rules Committee after its annual rules meeting held June 2-4 at The Alexander hotel in Indianapolis. The rules changes were accepted by the NFHS Board of Directors and are effective with the 2025 season.

Rule 1-3-2c1 addresses allowable grips on non-wood bats and now includes clarification that resin, pine tar or another drying agent can be applied to the bat, not to exceed beyond 18 inches from the base of the knob. In addition to allowing players more grip control on their bats, it makes the standards the same as wood bats.

This revision to high school basketball rules was one of 12 changes approved by the NFHS Basketball Rules Committee at its April 9-11 meeting in Indianapolis. All recommended changes were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

“The committee approved changes addressing a variety of different areas,” said Lindsey Atkinson, NFHS Director of Sports. “Maintaining a focus on player safety, fairness, balance and rules that officials can effectively adjudicate continue to be the focus of the committee.”

05/13/24 – Board of Control Adjusts Swimming & Diving Competition Start Date for 2024-2025

Athletic Department Blog Updates

At its May meeting, the KHSAA Board of Control made a revision to the swimming & diving competition starting date as well as the date for postseason competition. This will be the second year utilizing a three-round state format to continue efforts to grow participation throughout the state and resolve other logistical issues at postseason venues including reduced deck space and seating capacities.

This movement to an earlier starting date will further enable local options for start dates of the postseason and lessen potential conflicts with prospective state first-round and finals sites. This also addresses some expressed concerns regarding the intensity of postseason competition rounds and the desire to have additional time between those state rounds. This change in dates also necessitates an adjustment in the starting date for swimming meets in order to afford schools the previously adopted season length.

For 2025:

  • The first swimming & diving meet can be held on or […]

Participants Now Inbounds with One Point of Contact in High School Wrestling

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INDIANAPOLIS – Beginning with the 2024-25 season, high school wrestlers will be inbounds with only one point of contact of either wrestler inside or on the boundary line.

This fundamental change to high school wrestling was one of six major changes impacting almost 30 rules recommended by the NFHS Wrestling Rules Committee at its April 1-3 meeting in Indianapolis. All recommended changes were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

Previously, high school wrestlers were considered to be inbounds if a total of two supporting points of either wrestler were inside or on the boundary line. The two supporting points could be two supporting points of one wrestler or one supporting point of each wrestler inside or on the boundary line.

04/29/2024 – Title IX Report Error in Calculation of Historical Team Matrix

    Athletic Department Blog Updates

It has been brought to our attention that there is an issue with this year’s online Title IX report tool.  It involves the Historical Team Matrix that is used to determine Test 2.  Specifically, Volleyball and Wrestling. Both the Team Matrix and Test 2 are automatically generated.

As you are aware, we split the genders for both sports in our database this past school year, but the Title IX software was not modified to reflect that change. Therefore, in most cases, the matrix will show that you offered Volleyball and Wrestling for the current school year, it omitted all past data.

Overnight tonight, we will roll out the software patch and automatically unsubmit any Title IX reports that have been submitted. Each school that has submitted will then need to sign back into their KHSAA account, review each Title IX form, and then resubmit their report by Wednesday, May 1.

03/21/24 – NFHS Bat Compliance Update Warstic Bonesaber-3 Baseball Bat

    Baseball Blog Updates

The KHSAA received the following from the NFHS office regarding the Warstic Bonesaber-3 Baseball Bat.

FOLLOW-UP CLARIFICATION FROM THE NFHS TO THE BELOW POST

For clarification, the Warstic Bonesaber -3 non-wood baseball bat with the factory handle wrapping is compliant.  However, please emphasize to your schools and umpires that the Warstic Bonesaber -3 baseball bat is a compliant non-wood baseball bat for high school varsity competition with factory handle wrapping.

Any baseball bat (wood or non-wood) from any bat manufacturer with a traditional or non-traditional knob is at risk of being rendered non-compliant when it is rewrapped in a manner that the wrapping is over the knob making the knob flush (level with) the handle. A simple solution to correct the non-compliant wrapped bat is to remove the existing wrapping and rewrap the handle.

The image of the red-wrapped bat below is an illegal bat because it was rewrapped
incorrectly. That wrapping eliminates the […]

We are happy to announce that we had enough participation to move Splatoon 3 (Nintendo Switch) and NBA2K24 (Playstation 4) from our two regional leagues to the KHSAA State League.  This means that these two titles will move up to the PlayVS/KHSAA postseason and in-person championships at the University of Kentucky on Thursday, April 25.  The KHSAA now offers all seven available titles at the state league level.

Our Kentucky PlayVS State League site has been updated with the addition of the two new titles:  https://www.playvs.com/kentucky

NBA 2K 24, like Madden NFL24, is what PlayVS refers to as “Solos” (or a 1 versus 1 title).  It allows KHSAA student-athletes to step onto the court with their favorite NBA teams in the 25th installment of the NBA2K Professional Basketball franchise. Solo teams play a 1v1 match, selecting from a pool of 30 NBA teams from the 2022-2023 season (No […]
