Mollie Morris (Union County) and Ryan Maynard (Taylor County) have been selected as the recipients of the fifth annual Louis Stout Memorial Scholarships, which would have been presented during the 2020 Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16® at Rupp Arena.

When former Commissioner Louis Stout passed away in 2012, his late widow Anna directed that donations on his behalf go to the Louis Stout Memorial Fund for Students. Mrs. Stout felt this was an opportunity for the KHSAA to honor student-athletes who excel in athletics, academics, school service and community service.

Winners will receive a one-time $2,000 scholarship payable to an institution of higher learning, and were chosen after careful review, with selection criteria based on athletic activities, non-athletic activities, non-school activities and an essay on the role a student-athlete should play in the community.

A two-sport letterman at Union County, Morris is a four-time All-District Academic Team selection in basketball and a three-time All-District Academic Team honoree in softball, where she helped the Bravettes to a 2017 District title. A 4.0 GPA student, Morris is involved in numerous extracurricular activities and organizations outside of athletics, including the Health Occupations Students of America, where she served as president as a junior and senior, and secretary as a sophomore. As a head coach in the American Basketball Association Training League, Morris volunteered for third and fourth grade girls’ basketball, planning practices and coaching games. She is a member of the Pep Club, Environmental Awareness Club, National Beta Club, National Honor’s Society and served as a captain in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes during her junior and senior years. She also interned with Morganfield Nursing and Rehabilitation and shadowed family medicine and pediatrician doctors at Methodist Hospital.

A three-sport standout at Taylor County, Maynard won the 1600 meters at the 2019 KHSAA Track and Field 2A State Meet and followed that up by winning the 2019 KHSAA Cross Country 2A State Championship. A two-time Heartland Conference cross country champion, Maynard was runner-up at the 2018 KHSAA Cross Country 2A State Championship and won the 2A Region 2 title in 2019, earning 2A Runner of the Year honors in the process. In addition to his state title in track, Maynard won the 3200 meter regional title in 2018 and 2019, and the 1600 meters at the 2019 regional. In soccer, Maynard finished in the top-4 in both points scored and goals scored during his junior and senior seasons, earning All-Region and All-Region Tournament Team accolades in 2019 while helping the Cardinals to a region runner-up finish. A 4.0 GPA student, he kept busy outside of athletics with various clubs and volunteer opportunities, including the Y-Club (serving as vice president his senior year), DECA Club, Academic Team, Beta Club, Pep Club. For the last four years, he has helped conduct a one-week summer camp, which he helped create, called Kids in Motion to help children spark a passion for running in order to develop healthier lifestyles.

About the Kentucky High School Athletic Association
The Kentucky High School Athletic Association was organized in 1917 and is the agency designated by the Kentucky Department of Education to manage high school athletics in the Commonwealth.
