01/08/24 – Applications Being Accepted for Louis Stout Memorial Scholarships for 2023-2024
When former Commissioner Louis Stout passed away in 2012, his widow Anna directed that donations on his behalf go to the Louis Stout Memorial Fund for Students. She felt this was a chance for the KHSAA to honor student-athletes who excel in athletics, academics, school service, and community service. The award process for 2023-2024 is now underway.
Applications are being accepted for students to apply for those awards through February 16, 2024. The award winners will be announced in conjunction with the boys’ state basketball tournament in March. Two grants, each in the amount of a one-time scholarship of $2,000 payable to an institution of higher learning, will be awarded. The scholarship is not renewable and is not endowed for expansion. The minimum criteria is a 3.5 (converted to 4.0 scale) grade point average; involvement in varsity sports or sport-activities; involvement in other school activities, a record of community service/involvement, and being a member of […]

Per KHSAA Bylaw 23, each school must submit its spring practice dates on or before December 15, 2023, for the spring, 2024 spring practice period.
Each football school may conduct ten (10) spring practice periods of not more than two (2) hours in length and not more than one practice per day over ten (10) days during three consecutive calendar weeks, which shall be chosen by the school on or before December 15.
Failure to submit the schedule by this date will result in a loss of the ability to conduct spring football practice.
Upon appeal of the member school Principal, dates may be selected for a school not submitting them on time, with the latest available start being the Monday following the original published Spring Break for the school.

11/17/23- Vacancy Announcement for Office Manager (Regular, Full-time) – Search Extended
The Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA), a private, non-profit entity designated by the Kentucky Board of Education to manage high school sports and sport-activities in the Commonwealth, has an immediate need to fill the position of Office Manager and Administrative Assistant to the Commissioner. This opening is created by the promotion of a current employee to another position within the organization and the prior search has been extended.
This opening will be filled as soon as possible and is a regular, full-time position with a work week of at least 37.5 hours, twelve months a year. This position does not offer regular remote work options due to the nature of the business and operational needs.
The KHSAA operates regular business hours at its offices in Lexington from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and this position will normally operate within that schedule. Current employees at the KHSAA operate on a memorandum of agreement […]
11/6/23- 5 Tips for Creating a Culture of Caring in Our High Schools
By Dr. Karissa Niehoff, Chief Executive Officer of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), and Julian Tackett, Commissioner of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association
Participants in high school sports and performing arts are under tremendous pressure these days – from parents, teachers, coaches and peers. Their days are consumed with school, sports and activities. They are trying to figure out who they are and who they want to be – all while having to compare themselves to everyone else on social media. It’s easy to see why high school students have a lot on their plates … and their minds.
It is time for all of us to turn our attention to these students, including the activity participants at schools in Kentucky. Empathy is so important. No matter who you are—a parent, teacher, coach, athletic administrator, performing arts director or anyone else who interacts with teens—we can all play a part […]

10/28/23- Football Update 10/28/23
INFORMATION UPDATE
- Apologies in advance for the delay in getting this information to you. Everything was ready just after midnight but there was one single non-submitted score that delayed finalizing everything, including tiebreakers, etc. That score wasn’t received until early this morning. But all should be accurate now.
OFFICIALS AVAILABILITY AND GAME SCHEDULING
- THANK YOU to those schools that cooperated and either voluntarily scheduled on Thursday or Saturday. We could not manage this week without cooperation.
- From this point, ANY Friday night game will only have five officials. If you desire 7, select Thursday or Saturday.
- Most of the matchups were determined more than a week ago, and thanks to the nearly 65% of you who got your information submitted this week.
PLAYOFF INSTRUCTIONS
- Though the instructions have been on the KHSAA website for several weeks, some are just now realizing they need them.
- See the complete fall instructions link […]
10/24/23- Football Playoffs Update
The following is to update schools regarding the 2023 Football Playoffs, with particular emphasis on Rounds 1-4.
OFFICIALS AVAILABILITY AND GAME SCHEDULING
Last week, we held a conference call with our assigners, with the following data gleaned from that call.
- Clearly, they feel comfortable with assigning, at most, between 85 and 88 crews for the first round if all contests had five officials. We have 95 games currently scheduled.
- Simply put, we will need to have some schools play on Thursday night or Saturday night if we are going to be able to ensure that full crews of officials are assigned.
- And be mindful that last year, we had 20 schools desire a full crew of seven officials for the first round.
- Simply put, the supply/demand equation is not balanced right now.
- We have around 80 first-year officials and for the most part, the assigners are not as comfortable with those officials in […]
10/17/23- Wrestling Schools Reminded about Needed Information, Girls’ Wrestling; Wrestling Survey Results
ROSTER UPDATE
Member schools are reminded that if you are going to compete in Girls’ Wrestling in competition against other girls’ wrestling teams, it is imperative that the School Control Panel be updated to indicate that you will be doing such. Much information will need to be gathered from those schools as postseason logistics are formulated. It is the staff’s intention to have a model near final to report this data to the Board of Control at their November meeting as this first year of an implemented championship in girls’ wrestling is executed. Such things as qualifying rounds and sites cannot be determined until there is a realistic estimate of those schools competing.
In addition, schools are reminded that (per the notice earlier this month at https://ly.khsaa.org/ndaa), the rosters for girls’ competition and boys’ competition are separate. In the case of a girl who competes in girls-only competition AND boys/coed competition, be sure they […]
10/16/23- REMINDER- KHSAA to Again Conduct Title IX Meetings, See Registration for 2023-2024
The KHSAA will be conducting two Title IX Webinars for 2023-24 via Zoom. Due to the geographic disparity of those schools being audited this year, it is a positive membership service to conduct these remotely this year.
- The first will be on Tuesday morning, October 24 at 8:00 a.m. Eastern Time.
- The second will be on Thursday morning, October 26 at 8:00 a.m. Eastern Time.
This workshop should be extremely beneficial for all member schools, especially as schools prepare for re-visits during the coming years. Since these meetings are being held as Zoom Webinars, attendees will be muted but can submit questions to the panelists via the Q&A feature of the webinars.
EILA Credit has been applied for in order to help the appropriate administrators who attend and in addition, this meeting will count four (4) hours toward the Bylaw 25 required hours for Athletic Directors.
The meetings should conclude no later than […]

10/06/23- Football Playoff Schedule Request and Football RPI Clarification and Clean-up
FOOTBALL PLAYOFF SCHEDULING REQUEST
As teams start qualifying for the playoffs, we are asking for schools’ help in scheduling, especially in the first round. As all are aware, our supply of officials is not at the levels we were during the early 2000s when we had abundant numbers. Many of our associations, including some of our larger groups, have struggled to return to even their pre-COVID legals in terms of numbers. As such, staffing that first round which is always difficult, is likely very problematic, especially if all teams insist on trying to play on the same Friday night. Our assigners are very conscious of the need to only use those that feel are “playoff ready”, and really need your help on these dates.
There are distinct advantages to playing on Thursday or Saturday that negate the usual concerns about different preparation weeks, etc. Teams seem to be very adept at moving games during fall […]
