During its 2018 Regular Session, both houses of the Kentucky General Assembly approved HB290, and the bill was signed into law by the governor on April 2. See the full text of the bill at http://www.lrc.ky.gov/recorddocuments/bill/18RS/HB290/HCS1.pdf with a digest of the proceedings at http://www.lrc.ky.gov/record/18RS/HB290.htm. With the signing by the governor, the bill will go into effect on July 1, 2018, for KHSAA member schools.

The bill will necessitate an amendment to KHSAA Bylaw 22, Sec. 1 (listed at https://khsaa.org/handbook/bylaws/20172018/bylaw22.pdf) and this amendment will be done through the normal regulatory approval process this spring. 04/09/18- Reminder About Corresponding Date Rollover – 2018-19 through 2021-22 And Changes in Basketball, Tennis and Track & Field Schedules

Archery Blog Updates

This reminder is for all member schools as scheduling decisions are made relative to 2018-2019 and beyond. Athletic Directors and others scheduling contests should pay close attention to the information at https://khsaa.org/general/resources/corresponding-dates/. These charts are invaluable when scheduling year-to-year. It is critical that athletic directors and athletic administrators ensure that this information is passed on to any coach that assists with scheduling in any sport.

Events that are always held the same time each year, or contests played between opponents regularly at the same time each year, should use the corresponding week numbers for reference when choosing dates, not the relative position within the month. In other words, schools should think in terms of the game always being in week 12, 13, 14, etc., rather than the last weekend in December or first weekend in March. Using the corresponding week numbers will help prevent inadvertent scheduling issues.

For example, a quick look at https://khsaa.org/handbook/correspondingdates/federationcalendar.pdf illustrates a […]

02/14/18 – NFHS Announces KHSAA Coach of the Year Honorees for 2016-17

2017-2018 News Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 14, 2018

As part of its annual recognition program, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Coaches Association recently announced its award winners for the 2016-17 seasons. Twenty-five coaches from Kentucky were honored as Coaches of the Year for their respective sports at the state level, while Johnson Central head football coach James Matney was named the NFHS Sectional Coach of the Year.

The NFHS, which has been recognizing coaches through an awards program since 1982, honors coaches in the top 10 girls sports and top 10 boys sports (by participation numbers), and in two “other” sports – one for boys and one for girls – that are not included in the top 10 listings. The NFHS also recognizes a spirit coach as a separate award category. Winners of NFHS awards must be active coaches during the year for which they receive their award.

01/12/18 – Board of Control Expands State Archery Format, Reviews Initial Football Realignment Parameters

2017-2018 News Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 12, 2018

During the course of its regularly scheduled meeting at the KHSAA offices on Thursday, the Board of Control approved a proposal from staff to create a new championship opportunity for girls in the sport-activity of Archery. Where previously Archery was conducted as a coed sport, awarding one overall team championship, the regional and state competitions will now award separate team championships for coed and all-girls divisions.

“With the continued growth of Archery since becoming a sanctioned sport-activity six years ago, staff was asked to look into the feasibility of creating a separate all-girls division,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “The number of female competitors in our member schools and the overwhelming support of this proposal by the advisory committee made for an easy decision to recommend.”

Staff will return to the board in February with a final outline of the […]

08/25/17- Reminders on Schedules/Rosters/Statistics Entry Requirement

Athletic Department Blog Updates

Please take a moment to review the following reminders on requirements for member schools involving schedules, rosters and statistics.

SCOREBOARD/ROSTER/SCHEDULE
The KHSAA/Riherds.com Scoreboard is provided as a service to schools, student-athletes, media members and the general public. Scoreboard data is copyrighted through a joint partnership with the KHSAA, Frank Riherd and Riherds.com, and the Association thanks them for their efforts in support of this project.

One of the most frequent complaints we hear from the media, general public and our own membership is that the scoreboard contains inaccurate schedules and rosters. As this is often the tool the media uses to cover your programs, this information provides tremendous promotional benefit to your students and school community. It is the responsibility of each school to maintain its schedules and rosters with current and accurate information, including jersey numbers and positions for all listed student-athletes.

07/20/17 – Heat and Humidity Reminders

Athletic Department Blog Updates

With temperatures rising across the state, now is a good time to remind all of our school administrators and coaches of the requirements of the Heat Index program. No game, or plan for a game, is worth short-cutting this required procedure that is now nearly fifteen years old. Nothing about the program has changed, but with the turnover in coaches (and administrators) perhaps a few heat index reminders are helpful:

  • Heat index requirements and restrictions apply (and have always applied) to outdoor and indoor sports. In many cases during the summer, indoor practice areas (including gymnasiums) are set to be electronically controlled in terms of temperature and coaches must monitor conditions to ensure compliance.
  • While the gold standard for heat index measurement is the wet bulb globe, the KHSAA has adopted the use of the digital sling psychrometer as the measurement instrument for heat index as the next best available and most cost effective […]

10/10/16 – Reminder of Soccer Postseason Tie Breaker Procedures

As the Soccer postseason begins, every contest from this point forward shall have a winner to determine which team advances in the tournament. If the score is tied following the end of regulation, two five-minute sudden victory overtime periods shall be played. If either team scores during one of the sudden victory periods, the contest is over.

If the score still remains tied following the overtime periods, the contest will be decided by kicks from the mark (penalty kicks). Each team will select five different kickers to take a penalty kick. The team scoring the greatest number of kicks shall be declared the winner and advance.

If the score remains tied after the five kicks, each team will select five different kickers and the kicks from the mark shall continue in sudden victory format. The kicks shall continue in this alternating fashion until a winner is determined.

2016-2017 Official Ball Adoptions

Athletic Department Blog Updates

Reminder to school administrators about the primary points of the KHSAA and its ball adoption agreements.

In an effort to offset the services and events provided by the KHSAA and eliminate passing on a great deal of additional cost to the membership, the association has long entered into official ball adoption agreements. The provisions of these agreements are similar and official ball numbers are listed in the table below.

The following provisions are in place in each of the listed sports:

  • A brand specific requirement is in place. For example, the Select Sport soccer ball is required for all use in postseason play (all levels). However, the ball does NOT have to be the Royale model. 04/22/16 – Reminder Bylaw 23 Limitation of Seasons

Athletic Department Blog Updates

This is a reminder to all administrators and coaches concerning Bylaw 23, Limitation of Seasons. KHSAA staff members have received several inquiries about permitted activity,  specifically concerning fall sports and practice/tryouts for the fall. The same principle and rule would apply to any “tryout” in any sport or sport-activity that is not held during the period defined by Bylaw 23.

The first official tryout/practice date for 2016 football is July 10.  For the other fall sports/sport-activities (Soccer, Golf, Field Hockey, Volleyball, Cross Country, Competitive Cheer), the first official practice date is July 15. Only after these dates can anything mandatory be required of team members or potential team members.

Until the day following the last day of school or May 31 (whichever is earliest), coaches are permitted to provide instruction and be involved with team members (provided such is approved by the principal), but continue to be restricted in “competitive” situations with other schools unless they are […]
