09/28/18 – National High School Activities Month to Spotlight Benefits of High School Activity Programs
INDIANAPOLIS, IN (September 28, 2018) — The annual celebration of National High School Activities Month begins next week for the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and its 51 state high school associations. The month-long celebration in October offers the NFHS membership and the nation’s schools an opportunity to recognize the contributions and benefits young people experience by participation in sports and performing arts.
Each week of the October celebration places an emphasis on vital aspects of high school activity programs. Those areas include National Sportsmanship, Fan Appreciation and Public-Address Announcers Week (October 1-6), National Performing Arts Activities Week (October 7-13), National Coaches/Sponsors/Advisors/Officials Week (October 14-20) and National Community Service/Youth Awareness Week (October 21-27).
National High School Activities Month serves as a reminder to students, parents, coaches, officials and others in communities across the country about the values and benefits of high school activity programs. Additionally, the month-long celebration assists in addressing society’s […]
09/27/18- Information Regarding School Participation in eSports
As has been detailed at each of the regional meetings this fall and at the Annual Meeting in September, the Board of Control has authorized staff to enter into a prospective partnership with the NFHS Network to allow our schools to compete in an eSports competition. This competition, which will be managed by a third-party firm (PlayVS), will allow competition between schools throughout two different seasons during the school year. For the most part, and based on school and student available resources, competitors never have to leave the school to participate.
After reading this post, you should complete the online form at https://khsaa.org/ge87-esports-information-request/. Please review the entire post prior to responding.
A few points should be reviewed and considered as you review the information from PlayVS and consider your response:
- A fact sheet about the eSports initiative is available on the KHSAA website at https://khsaa.org/esports/20182019/pvsonesheet.pdf
- The PlayVS Promotional Trailer about the eSports initiative […]

09/25/18 – Wrestling Weight Management News
We hope that you are excited about the upcoming wrestling season. As you start to prepare for the season, we wanted to make sure you are aware of an alternative device that can be used for the weight management program at your school.
The InBody 120 unit has been approved to be used in Kentucky for measuring/tracking body fat in wrestlers.
As a matter of background, the InBody 120 unit is the official BIA Scale for the NWCA. The NWCA partnered with InBody after it was proven to be the most accurate of the three BIA scales tested (Tanita, InBody and Rice Lake) in an independent validation study at Cal State Fullerton. This study did go through peer review and was published in a reputable journal.
Other benefits to use of the InBody 120 unit include:
- $1,500 cost which is a major discount for a BIA Scale of this magnitude (Regular Pricing is $2,500.00)
- Additional […]

Credentials for freelance photographers and stringers must be requested by the sports editor/director at the outlet the freelancer will be representing. No credentials will be issued outside of the online credentialing system. The KHSAA reserves the right to limit the quantity of credentials issued to media outlets when space is at a premium.

09/25/18 – Board of Control Addresses Future Championship Formats and Schedules in Several Sports
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 25, 2018
The Board of Control conducted its first meeting of the 2018-19 academic year on Thursday, September 20 at the Association offices. Much of the day’s agenda involved ongoing discussion of the future format of several KHSAA championships. Among the action taken, the Board gave tentative approval to transitioning the State Softball and Baseball Tournaments to 8-team single elimination events, with the key provision of re-establishing semi-state play, preferably at non-high school sites. This builds upon last year’s decision to move away from the double-elimination format in Softball, in the interest of player safety and gender participation experience equity.
The tentative plan would transition these championships to 8-team events with first round, semi-state games, rotated in geographic pods and played at a neutral site. The Commissioner and staff were directed to develop site criteria for semi-state games for review at October’s Board meeting, with the goal to […]
09/13/18 – Basketball Interpretation Relative to Bylaw 9 in Regards to AAU Tryouts for Basketball
The KHSAA continues to receive inquiries in regards to Bylaw 9. Basketball/Football Contestant On Other Teams, Postseason And All-Star Games. More specifically we have received numerous inquiries in regards to AAU tryouts and whether or not this is permissible.
Bylaw 9 states that athletes who have previously BOTH been enrolled in grade nine and then subsequently represented a KHSAA member school in a contest or scrimmage, cannot play in an organized basketball game from the first day of classes for the student body through the first day of practice (October 15).
Therefore, while the tryouts themselves may be permitted we wanted to remind athletic directors, coaches, and students what is permitted and not permitted for basketball players in regards to these tryouts. What specifically is permissible and not permissible for basketball players to participate in after the first day of school is outlined in Case BL-9-2 and can be viewed by clicking on the following link:

09/17/18 – Reminders About Bylaw 11 – Financial Aid
As the school year is underway, the KHSAA wanted to remind Administrators, Athletic Directors, coaches, student-athletes and parents about Bylaw 11, which outlines the parameters for permissible and impermissible financial aid for student-athletes participating in KHSAA sanctioned sports or sport-activities. Financial Aid, as defined by the membership within this bylaw, is any and all aid given to a student which reduces tuition, including awards, grants, work-study, reductions and waivers.
It is worth reminding you that a student becomes ineligible to participate if he/she is more than sixty (60) days deficient in the payment of tuition, necessary fees, cost and other charges for attending a member school without corresponding documentation or a revised needs analysis form.
This bylaw also defines both this and other examples of impermissible aid and is available in its entirety here: https://khsaa.org/handbook/bylaws/20182019/bylaw11.pdf

Jaggers’ family business: coaching high school football since 1963
BY MIKE FIELDS (Sept. 6, 2018)
You could say the Jaggers’ family business is coaching high school football. It’s a business that’s been handed down from generation to generation to generation, a business that’s always been more about relationships than results, more about passion than a paycheck.
It took root in 1963 when Joe Jaggers began his coaching career as an assistant at Franklin-Simpson, then spread to different parts of Kentucky, with Joe heading programs at Old Kentucky Home, Nelson County, Trigg County, Fort Knox and North Hardin, winning five state titles along the way, and becoming the state’s all-time winningest coach before retiring in 1998.
Joe’s sons Marty and Crad followed in his footsteps, and between them coached from 1982 to 2014.
Marty’s son Josh is the fourth branch in the family tree of coaches. He’s been at LaRue County since 2008 and is in his fifth year as boss of the Hawks.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (September 6, 2018) — The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), in collaboration with the U.S. Center for SafeSport (The Center), has developed an online education course titled “Protecting Students from Abuse,” which is available at no cost on the NFHS Learning Center at www.NFHSLearn.com.
In an effort to assist schools in creating an enjoyable and safe environment for students, the course presents definitions of several types of abusive behaviors and misconduct, how to recognize the signs and symptoms of abuse, and the ways in which someone can report these behaviors. The course also includes some “DOs and DON’Ts” for making a report.
The “Protecting Students from Abuse” course was developed from the training offered by the U.S. Center for SafeSport, whose vision is “to make sure that athletes are safe, supported and strengthened through sports.” The organization addresses bullying, harassment, hazing, as well as physical, emotional and sexual abuse […]
