03/01/12 – Welcome to KHSAA Tennis Notes

March 1, 2012 Tennis Blog Updates

PrintWelcome!      We have begun a new season and with it comes a new method of communication between our office and the member schools. When our Boss first told us to create a Blog, I panicked. I’m not a writer. But here we go with my first post! When I was teaching, I had to explain to my students the Kentucky Department of Educations terms: Novice, Apprentice, Proficient and Distinguished. I told my students that they should think in terms of an imaginary trip and how to get from here to the Beach. A “Novice” writer would get you lost. An “Apprentice” writer will get you there, but it will take days and you will hate the trip. A “Proficient” writer will be like MapQuest, they will get you there in the shortest time possible. But a “Distinguished” writer will not only get you there, but you will enjoy the journey. Unlike my Boss, I’m not a distinguished writer, my goal will be to reach “proficient” as often as possible.       With that said, here are some things I need to let you be aware of. First, we no longer have an “Official Ball” of the KHSAA. We are going to use the Dunlop Championship Ball for the State Championships. Together with the USTA Kentucky, we have worked with Hunter Hines at Dunlop to help our schools get a quality Ball at reasonable prices, so if you’re in need of Tennis balls and want to use the one we and the USTA Kentucky tournaments are using, contact Hunter by email for the special Kentucky High School coach price on cases of balls. Hunter.Hines@dunlopsports.com      Second item of concern is the timing of our Championships. The Board of Control voted this year to move two spring championships away from the schools State Testing window. That puts our window for the Regional tournaments to be played starting on Friday the 4th of May through Friday the 11th.  I just want you Coaches to make sure when you vote on when to play your tournament, you keep in mind the AP Testing that begins on Monday the 7th of May. This may not effect all of you but it should be mentioned along with Proms, Senior Award nights, etc.      Remember to check this blog for more Tennis Notes as the spring unfolds!
