04/09/18- Four (4) Contest Minimum Removed from Most Sports/Events by Board of Control

Athletic Department Blog Updates

At it’s most recent meeting, the Board of Control addressed concerns from several of the  Commissioner’s Advisory Committees, particularly those representing the individual sports. These concerns surrounded a long-standing Association requirement for a set number of entries into high school competition prior to entering the region. In addition to issues relative to tracking, record keeping and monitoring, the Commissioner and his staff also noted issues relative to the problems this requirement causes at the local level and the inhibiting factor that these requirements might have on multi-sport participation.

Following a review of the discussion in various committees, a review of the rules in most other states, and based on a recommendation from the Commissioner after input from staff, the Board voted to continue to require four interscholastic contests in event-specific competition for those students entering the region meeting in Diving (Swimming and Diving) and Pole Vault (Track and Field). Only competition involving grades 9 through 12 […]

04/09/18- Implementation of HB290, Play Against Home School Individuals

During its 2018 Regular Session, both houses of the Kentucky General Assembly approved HB290, and the bill was signed into law by the governor on April 2. See the full text of the bill at http://www.lrc.ky.gov/recorddocuments/bill/18RS/HB290/HCS1.pdf with a digest of the proceedings at http://www.lrc.ky.gov/record/18RS/HB290.htm. With the signing by the governor, the bill will go into effect on July 1, 2018, for KHSAA member schools.

The bill will necessitate an amendment to KHSAA Bylaw 22, Sec. 1 (listed at https://khsaa.org/handbook/bylaws/20172018/bylaw22.pdf) and this amendment will be done through the normal regulatory approval process this spring. Member schools will be able to engage in competition, should they choose, against homeschool units or involve homeschool students enrolled in Kentucky beginning with the 2018-2019 school year.

  • This change DOES NOT allow KHSAA member schools to participate against other schools located in located in Kentucky that have chosen not to join the KHSAA.

04/09/18- Reminder About Corresponding Date Rollover – 2018-19 through 2021-22 And Changes in Basketball, Tennis and Track & Field Schedules

Archery Blog Updates

This reminder is for all member schools as scheduling decisions are made relative to 2018-2019 and beyond. Athletic Directors and others scheduling contests should pay close attention to the information at https://khsaa.org/general/resources/corresponding-dates/. These charts are invaluable when scheduling year-to-year. It is critical that athletic directors and athletic administrators ensure that this information is passed on to any coach that assists with scheduling in any sport.

Events that are always held the same time each year, or contests played between opponents regularly at the same time each year, should use the corresponding week numbers for reference when choosing dates, not the relative position within the month. In other words, schools should think in terms of the game always being in week 12, 13, 14, etc., rather than the last weekend in December or first weekend in March. Using the corresponding week numbers will help prevent inadvertent scheduling issues.

For example, a quick look at https://khsaa.org/handbook/correspondingdates/federationcalendar.pdf illustrates a […]

02/21/18 – Board of Control Addresses Postseason Formats, Future Sites and Alignment For Several Sports

2017-2018 News Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 21, 2018

During the course of its February meeting at the KHSAA offices on Wednesday, the Board of Control deliberated on the postseason formats, future sites and alignments for several sports. The most impactful decision made Wednesday concerned the future of the state softball tournament, with the Board voting for the event to transition to a single-elimination format in 2019. The move to single elimination will bring the softball championship more in-line with the baseball state tournament while also helping to alleviate concerns with the potential overuse of pitchers under the current double-elimination format.

“We have been discussing the future and the format of the state softball tournament for the last several years, and I applaud the Board for the steps it took today in approving our recommendations,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “Examining the state softball and baseball tournaments, you would be hard pressed to say the […]

05/03/17 – Regional Tennis Sportmanship

Tennis Blog Updates

As regional play approaches, we would like to remind all schools of behavioral expectations to further emphasize sportsmanship in our Tennis program. High school tennis is an extension of the classroom, and as such, all involved should conduct themselves in a manner that reflects teamwork, respect, responsibility and perspective. That includes coaches, student-athletes and spectators.

Officials expect good behavior and will quickly penalize misconduct. To achieve this goal, all involved should:

  • Avoid unnecessary noise during play. This includes cell phones, pagers, etc.
  • Stay well away from the fence surrounding the courts so as not to distract any players or hinder any coaches.
  • Do not talk to players from the time they take the court to warm up until the match is over. This includes timeouts and set breaks.
  • Coaches, be sure to allow the Officials or opposing coaches to correct the […]

09/22/16 – Board of Control Approves Unified/Adapted Opportunities in Bowling; Alters State Tennis Format

2016-2017 News Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 22, 2016

During its regularly scheduled meeting at the KHSAA Offices on Wednesday, the Board of Control approved a proposal to add Unified and Adapted opportunities in the sport-activity of Bowling, beginning with the 2017 state championship. Unified sport allows for combined competition involving intellectually disabled students and non-intellectually disabled counterparts, while adapted sport allows for participation by those with physical disability.

09/22/16 – Board Approves New Provisions for State Tennis

Tennis Blog Updates

After hearing from its membership and discussing the issue with the KHSAA Staff, the Board of Control yesterday decided to return the state tennis team title to a points-based championship for 2017. The Association will continue to sponsor an Individual and Doubles Championship, which will be held May 18-20 in Lexington.

Following a change in format to the 2016 State Tennis Tournament, significant feedback was gathered from the membership after the individual and team events were split over separate weekends. The split, necessitated by competition limitations recommended by the USTA and its sports medicine researchers, was put in place to prevent any student-athlete from participating in more than two full-length matches per day. The change also necessitated mandated play to determine a true region champion, adding additional matches to an already full competition schedule for most players.

While team tennis has expanded over the last eight years of play, the requirement of seven players per school […]

11/19/15 – Board Approves Revised Schedule For State Baseball, Tennis Tournaments

2015-2016 News Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 19, 2015

On Wednesday, the Board of Control approved a proposal from KHSAA staff to revise the schedule for the state baseball tournament during its regularly scheduled meeting at the Association’s headquarters. In an effort to alleviate competitive issues under the current format resulting from pitching limitations and roster depth, as outlined in the extensive research conducted by Lawrence County Athletic Director Travis Feltner and validated through staff review of the current format, the new format will provide a minimum of three days of rest between the quarterfinals and the semifinals. Beginning with this year’s state tournament, the revised format will allow teams the opportunity to use their pitchers at the top of the rotation in both the early rounds (first round/quarterfinals) and the later rounds (semifinals/championship).

“Pitching limitations are in place for the health and safety of our student-athletes,” KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett said. “In keeping with the overall desire of the […]

11/19/15 – Tennis Tournament Format Changes

Tennis Blog Updates

For the past several years, the KHSAA staff and Board of Control have been reviewing the region and state tennis formats due to concerns expressed from experts in Sports Medicine. At its recent meeting, the KHSAA Board of Control approved a staff recommendation based on feedback and consensus from the Commissioner’s Tennis Advisory Committee, to no longer play the team vs. team and individual singles/doubles state competitions on the same days. Rather, these events will be separated to conduct a separate team vs. team tennis (seven-player) tournament. The exact date, location and time of these team matches will be determined in the near future with the traditional singles and doubles event remaining on its corresponding weekend.

The Kentucky Medical Association’s Sports Medicine Committee, acting on a report and adopting research-based findings from the USTA, the governing body for Youth and Adult Tennis in the U.S., had recently strongly recommended that changes be made to ensure that […]

We expect the participants to report to their site and if we have to move indoors we will give instructions at that location for those […]

The staff at the KHSAA had been in discussions with various member schools concerning the proposed alignment of Tennis beginning in 2014-2015. Based upon the information gathered and feedback received, rather than a major overhaul of the alignment, a few adjustments to the alignment were made. These changes can be found at http://khsaa.org/current-alignment-tennis/
