2017-2018 News Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 14, 2018

In an effort to continue the national emphasis and the KHSAA’s own efforts to de-emphasize sports specialization in the athletic culture, the Association recently launched the “Triple Threat Award” program to recognize those students who participate in high school athletics year round.

The award, which is given to student-athletes who participate in a KHSAA sport or sport-activity on the varsity level during each season of the academic year (fall/winters/spring), will be presented to a total of 1,814 student-athletes for 2017-18.

The awards are based solely on each member school’s rosters that were submitted through the KHSAA’s online system, as that is the only permitted determinant for athletic eligibility (including team eligibility).

05/09/18 – Board of Control Addresses Football Alignment, Scheduling Grid, Cross Bracketing

2017-2018 News Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 9, 2018

The Board of Control conducted its final meeting of the 2017-18 academic year on May 8-9 at the KHSAA offices, addressing several issues related to football along with the postseason for multiple sport-activities.

Following initial review in February, KHSAA staff presented the draft football alignment (2019-22) to the membership for comment. After a lengthy review of feedback and consideration of each change proposed by the membership, the Board approved a final four-year alignment to begin in 2019. The new football alignment can be viewed at: https://khsaa.org/final-approved-alignment-football-2019-through-2022-playing-seasons/

With recent change allowing football playing member schools to have two scrimmages regardless of playing season, staff recommended to eliminate the “week 0” terminology from the scheduling grid, as it no longer has an impact on a team’s regular season or scrimmage schedule. The mandatory scheduling grid is listed at: https://khsaa.org/football/schedulinggridfor2019through2022.pdf

The Board approved the removal of “week 0” from the […]

05/01/18 – The Inherent Risk of Sport Specialization

2017-2018 News Releases

By Bob Gardner, Executive Director of the National Federation of State High School Associations and Julian Tackett, Commissioner of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.

One of the responsibilities that parents take most seriously is protecting their children from injury, whether it is buckling seat belts in a car or wearing a helmet while riding a bike. And when their kids become teenagers and want to participate in sports or other activities, parents do everything they can to keep their sons and daughters from getting hurt.

But not all injuries are caused by a twist, fall, collision or accident. Many are caused when young athletes repeat the same athletic activity so often that muscles, ligaments, tendons, and bones don’t have time to recover—especially among middle school and high school students. These injuries can end promising careers, cost families tens of thousands of dollars, squash dreams and literally change lives.

Examples include elbow and arm injuries […]

03/29/18 – The Truth About Sports Scholarships

2017-2018 News Releases

Bob Gardner, Executive Director of the National Federation of State High School Associations and Julian Tackett, Commissioner of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.

Unfortunately today many parents are trying to live out a dream through their sons and daughters – the dream of landing a college athletic scholarship by specializing in a sport year-round. Equally unfortunately, most of these dreams are never realized.

The odds of a sports scholarship paying for even a portion of a student’s college education are minuscule.

The College Board, a not-for-profit organization comprised of 6,000 of the world’s leading educational institutions, reports that a moderate cost for college students who attend a public university in their state of residence is $25,290 per year. The annual cost at a private college averages around $50,900.

Meanwhile, the most recent data from the NCAA reveals that the average Division I athletic scholarship is worth only $10,400. More significantly, the same study shows […]

01/19/18 – Become an Official – Stay Connected to High School Sports

2017-2018 News Releases

By Bob Gardner, Executive Director of the National Federation of State High School Associations and Julian Tackett, Commissioner of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.

They don’t normally make the headlines, their names are not in the box scores unless at the very bottom, and they don’t make the all-star teams, but perhaps the most essential individuals in high school sports are the contest officials.

These individuals are so important that, in fact, there would be no organized competitive sports at the high school level without the men and women who officiate these contests every day across the country. Subtract the dedicated men and women who officiate high school sports and competitive sports would no longer be organized; they would be chaotic. As many have stated, without officials, it is simply recess.

In some areas, high school officials are retiring faster than new licenses are being issued. And junior varsity, freshmen, and middle school games […]

01/12/18 – Board of Control Expands State Archery Format, Reviews Initial Football Realignment Parameters

2017-2018 News Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 12, 2018

During the course of its regularly scheduled meeting at the KHSAA offices on Thursday, the Board of Control approved a proposal from staff to create a new championship opportunity for girls in the sport-activity of Archery. Where previously Archery was conducted as a coed sport, awarding one overall team championship, the regional and state competitions will now award separate team championships for coed and all-girls divisions.

“With the continued growth of Archery since becoming a sanctioned sport-activity six years ago, staff was asked to look into the feasibility of creating a separate all-girls division,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “The number of female competitors in our member schools and the overwhelming support of this proposal by the advisory committee made for an easy decision to recommend.”

Staff will return to the board in February with a final outline of the […]
