11/15/24 – Board of Control Adopts Boys’ and Girls’ Lacrosse Alignment & Postseason Format

At its November 14 meeting, the KHSAA Board of Control approved the alignment, postseason format and dates, and officials’ fees for the 2025 Boys’ and Girls’ Lacrosse season. Each year, all aspects of the season and event will be reviewed and evaluated after its conclusion.

ALIGNMENT

The alignment will be comprised of eight regions.

  • Region 1 – Bowling Green High School, Greenwood High School, Owensboro High School, South Warren High School
  • Region 2 – Central Hardin High School, Desales High School, Dupont Manual High School, Mercy Academy, North Hardin High School, Presentation Academy
  • Region 3 – Assumption High School, Atherton High School, Louisville Collegiate School, Male High School, Sacred Heart Academy, Saint Xavier High School
  • Region 4 -Ballard High School, Christian Academy-Louisville High School, Eastern High School, Fern Creek High School, Kentucky Country Day High School, Trinity (Louisville) High School
  • Region 5 -Cooper High School, Covington Catholic High School, Dixie Heights High School, Notre Dame Academy, Ryle High School, St. Henry District High School, Walton-Verona High School
  • Region 6 -Anderson County High School, Collins High School, North Oldham High School, Oldham County High School, Shelby County High School, South Oldham High School
  • Region 7 -Bryan Station High School, Frederick Douglass High School, Great Crossing High School, Henry Clay High School, Sayre High School, Scott County High School
  • Region 8 -Lafayette High School, Lexington Catholic High School, Lexington Christian Academy, Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, Tates Creek High School, Woodford County High School

IMPORTANT DATES

  • First Practice – February 3
  • Regular Season- March 3 – May 7
  • Region Tournament – May 12 – May 15, but may be held earlier by agreement of the teams
  • State First Round – May 17
  • Semi-Finals – May 19 (Scheduled for Shelby County HS and Collins HS)
  • Championship – May 21  (Scheduled for Collins HS Doubleheader)

REGIONAL TOURNAMENT

  • Eight (8) Regional Tournaments completed by May 15
  • The Region Winner will advance to the State Tournament (8 teams).
    • Regions should meet at the beginning of the season to determine the site selection plan and seeding mechanisms. 
    • If seeding, there are no random selection opportunities, even in ties and in the case of unbreakable ties, broken by RPI.
    • If not determined by the first game, then seeding by RPI.

STATE FIRST ROUNDS

  • Splitting the state for the first round into regions 1-4 and 5-8 will prevent long travel to host sites.
  • Rotate pairings in 1-4, 5-8 groupings to lessen travel but allow competition outside of the region in the postseason
  • Groupings for 2025 will have Region 1 host Region 2, Region 3 host Region 4, Region 5 host Region 6 and Region 7 host Region 8
  • These pairings will rotate each year with a planned six-year cycle

STATE SEMI-FINALS AND FINAL

  • A blind draw will be held to determine matchups for the semifinal round.  

OFFICIATING INFORMATION

Prospective officials can go to khsaaofficials.org to seek a license.

Regular Season Game Fees

  • The standard fee is $90 for two officials for all regular season matches (including tournaments).
  • An additional $30 travel stipend will be provided if traveling more than 100 miles one-way (same as postseason in team sports).

PostSeason Fees

  • The standard fee is $90 
  • An additional $30 travel stipend will be provided if traveling more than 100 miles one-way (same as postseason in team sports).
  • Post-season would increment $10 each round

Assigners

  • In Arbiter, there will be a single statewide officials association, similar to the structure used in wrestling. Initially, 3-4 local assigners will manage assignments, drawing from the statewide pool of officials.
  • Local Policy Boards should help identify individuals and recommend to the Association office those who desire to be Assigning Secretary of Officials.
  • Possible local Assigners: 
    • 6th/ 7th Region 
    • 9th Region
    • 10th/ 11th Region

Uniforms

  • Uniforms for Officials will be a black and white shirt with 2” vertical stripes (mirrors football), short or long-sleeved shirt (with pocket) with embroidered or sublimated KHSAA logo over the heart.
  • Black slacks or shorts
  • Black gym shoes and black socks, regardless of shorts or slacks are worn
  • For the sponsored state championship competition, black shoes and black slacks should be worn.

About the Kentucky High School Athletic Association

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association was organized in 1917 and is the agency designated by the Kentucky Department of Education to manage high school athletics in the Commonwealth. The Association is a voluntary nonprofit 501(c)3 organization made up of 290 member schools, both public and non-public.
