11/07/20 – Start of Football Playoffs Delayed One Week
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 7, 2020
The KHSAA notified member schools this morning that the start of the football playoffs will be delayed one week in an effort to provide schools and school systems time to review their situations and work with their health departments to determine the best course of action. The first round of the playoffs will now take place the weekend of Nov. 19-21 with no additional planned changes in the playoff structure at this point in time.
In the meantime, schools and school systems should review site strategies, seating capacities, and all other facets of the likely contest(s) during this interim period and certainly remind students that what they do outside of practice and the game field can have a tremendous impact on themselves and those around them. 11/05/20 – KHSAA Coach of the Year Honorees Announced for 2019-20 Season

As part of its annual awards program, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Coaches Association recognizes Coach of the Year honorees from each state. Those named Coach of the Year at the state level then advance for consideration for Sectional Coach of the Year honors. Winners are chosen through a combination of their coaching accomplishments as well as their contributions outside of competition to help grow their respective sport.
The NFHS, which has been recognizing coaches through an awards program since 1982, honors coaches in the top 10 girls sports and top 10 boys sports (by participation numbers), and in two “other” sports – one for boys and one for girls – that are not included in the top 10 listings. 11/04/20 – State Volleyball Tournament Resumes Friday at George Rogers Clark HS

The KHSAA State Volleyball Championship will debut in a new venue this weekend (Nov. 6-7) as George Rogers Clark High School hosts the remaining rounds of the tournament starting Friday morning. GRC’s Cardinal Arena will become just the ninth home of the state volleyball tournament, which spent the last eight years (2012-19) at Valley High School in Louisville.
The quarterfinal round gets underway Friday at 9 a.m. when Russell takes on West Jessamine. Assumption and Mercy will square off at 12:30 p.m., followed by Henry Clay versus Greenwood at 4 p.m., and Notre Dame against McCracken County in the final match of the night at 7:30 p.m. The semifinals will be played Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., followed by the championship match that evening at 7:30 p.m.

10/29/20 – State Cross Country Championships To Debut at Bourbon County XC Course

History will be made at the 2020 KHSAA State Cross Country Championships, as the meet makes its debut at the Bourbon County Cross Country Course in Paris. This will mark the first time since 1978 that a state cross country championship was not contested at the Kentucky Horse Park. For the 1978 and 1979 seasons, the A and AA Meets were held at the Kentucky Horse Park, while the AAA Meet took place in Louisville. All classes moved to the Kentucky Horse Park in 1980, which served as the home of the state cross country meet ever since.

10/27/20 – NFHS Learning Center Releases New Content for Parents, Offers NFHS National Parent Credential
INDIANAPOLIS, IN — The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has announced additional parent-centered content on the NFHS Learning Center, along with the NFHS National Parent Credential certification for those who complete the designated course offerings.
“We are pleased to be able to offer more tools and resources for parents to utilize with their students,” said Dan Schuster, NFHS director of educational services. “The NFHS National Parent Credential provides a new professional development pathway for parents.”
Supporting the NFHS Learning Center’s continued efforts to correct negative parent behavior at events, the curriculum for the National Parent Credential is comprised of two free courses – “The Parent Seat” and “Positive Parenting Within School Programs.” Parents who achieve the National Parent Credential receive a certificate and a badge to be displayed on their Learning Center dashboard.

10/28/20 – State Field Hockey Championship Rescheduled For Nov. 12
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Oct. 28, 2020
The championship game of the 2020 KHSAA State Field Hockey Tournament has been rescheduled for Thursday, Nov. 12 at Christian Academy of Louisville’s Centurion Stadium. Provided both teams clear all follow-up protocol by contact tracers, the local health department and school health officials; Sacred Heart (15-4) and Christian Academy-Lou. (16-1) will square off at 7 p.m. for the state title.
Tickets purchased through GoFan for the originally scheduled game on Oct. 26 will be honored on Nov. 12. The championship game will be streamed live at KHSAA.tv as part of the NFHS Network, which is a subscription-based service ($10.99 per month). The 2020 KHSAA State Soccer Championships move to Henry Clay High School this week for the boys’ and girls’ semifinals and finals. Each game will be webcast live by KHSAA.tv as part of the NFHS Network, with live stats and free audio broadcasts available at khsaa.org. 10/27/20 – KHSAA State Volleyball Tournament Moving to George Rogers Clark HS

After full consideration of the available data and the recommendations outlined in the KHSAA’s Stage 3 Return To Competition guidelines, the Association has made the determination to move the 2020 State Volleyball Tournament to George Rogers Clark High School in Winchester.
As referenced in the KHSAA guidelines, it is recommended that contests not be played during the following seven-day period in counties where the incidence of COVID-19 exceeds 25 average daily cases per 100,000 population each Monday morning as detailed on the KDPH COVID-19 Dashboard map (listed in Red) at https://bit.ly/2D0K526. With Jefferson County remaining red as of October 27 and experiencing a continual increase in the last several days, the decision was made to move the tournament from Valley HS to George Rogers Clark.

Tonight’s championship game of the 2020 KHSAA State Field Hockey Tournament is being postponed in response to a single positive COVID-19 test from a participant in Saturday’s semifinal round. The Association was appropriately notified this afternoon by one of its member schools that subsequent to the semifinal games, a rostered participant tested positive.
In order to give contact tracers, the local health department and school health officials time to properly conduct their follow-up protocol, the championship game will be delayed to a future date.

The seventh annual KHSAA State Field Hockey Tournament gets underway this evening with four semi-state matchups on campus sites, before moving to Christian Academy-Louisville’s Centurion Field for the semifinals (Oct. 24) and championship (Oct. 26).

The pairings for the 2020 KHSAA Field Hockey, Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer, and Volleyball State Tournaments will be revealed Monday, Oct. 19 when the annual Fall Championship Draw Show is conducted at the KHSAA Offices at 1 p.m. The Draw Show will be broadcast live online by KHSAA.tv through the NFHS Network.

10/02/20 – Leachman/KHSAA State Golf Championships Set For Next Week

The first state championship of the 2020-21 academic year will take place next week, as the 2020 Leachman Buick•GMC•Cadillac/KHSAA State Golf Championships (Oct. 5-10) return to the Bowling Green Country Club for the 15th-consecutive season. The boys’ tournament begins with the opening round at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6, followed by the second 18 holes on Wednesday, Oct. 7. The girls’ championship opens with first round action on Friday, Oct. 9, with the final 18 holes slated for Saturday, Oct. 10.
The KHSAA will utilize Golf Genius for its scoring software this year, with one player in each group entering scores from a mobile device following each hole. 10/02/20 – NFHS Learning Center Adds New Officiating Courses for Soccer, Track and Field
INDIANAPOLIS, IN — In support of its commitment to high school officials’ education, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has announced two new free courses have been published to the online NFHS Learning Center – “Officiating Soccer: Pre-Game Conference for Officials” and “Officiating Track and Field.”
Designed as a complement to two other soccer officiating courses on the Learning Center, “Officiating Soccer: Pre-Game Conference for Officials” focuses on teaching referees the proper protocols to be carried out ahead of each contest. Key aspects include the importance of advance communication between officials, field inspections, and discussing relevant game-time topics and recent rule changes. Effectively executing the pre-game conference allows each referee to work cohesively with his or her team and be as informed and observant as possible during play.

10/01/20 – Initial Stat Leader Reports Released for Football, Soccer, Volleyball and Field Hockey

The first statistical leader reports of the season for football, boys’ and girls’ soccer, volleyball and field hockey have been posted at KHSAA.org. The leader reports will be updated every day at approximately 3 a.m., and will include all teams missing stats for no more than two games (one game in football).
With the addition of volleyball in 2019, statistical entry is now available for all sports on the KHSAA/Riherds.com Scoreboard. Statistical entry has the benefit of allowing member schools to highlight and promote the accomplishments of their student-athletes, which should be a priority for all involved in school-based sports.
Statistical entry is required of all member schools, and those failing to meet the requirement to enter stats are subject to penalties, including fines and other actions within the constraints of Bylaw 27. The declaration form for the sport-activity of Dance is now open. The deadline to complete this form is Monday, November 9th. Each member school shall only submit one form and you must be signed into the KHSAA School Subdomain to submit.
This declaration is for KHSAA Regional and State Competitions, so please discuss with your coach what division(s) your school will be entering as there will be no adjustments to divisions for any reason once the entries are posted.

09/24/20 – NFHS, NFL Announce Partnership to Promote High School Football
INDIANAPOLIS, IN — The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and the National Football League (NFL) have announced a first-ever partnership aimed at promoting the growth, understanding and support for football at the high school level.
As a part of the partnership funded by the NFL, the NFHS will work to develop and execute a strategic plan with the primary objective of promoting high school football.
A major focus of the NFHS-NFL partnership will involve surveying of state high school association administrators, high school student-athletes, parents, coaches and officials with regard to their experiences in football and the benefits of participation. 09/23/20 – Archery and Bass Fishing Participation Update
Following last week’s Board of Control meeting, we continue to receive inquiries regarding the sport-activities of Archery and Bass Fishing. Though both have an initial published practice date of October 1, they are classified as spring sport-activities by the Association.
It remains RECOMMENDED that the activities on campus be focused on the current season sports (fall at this point) and not on sports for other seasons (winter and spring sports) so as to lessen virus exposure and allow for a carefully measured return to in-person learning where and when local districts have made that decision.
For both Archery and Bass Fishing, practice and workouts are at the discretion of each member school.
For KHSAA sport-activities, catastrophic insurance coverage only applies to the postseason (regional and state championships). Participation in all other competitions is at the discretion of each member school without the benefit of catastrophic insurance provided by the Association.

9/10/20 – Field Hockey Nominations Sought for Female Midway/KHSAA Student Athlete-of-the-Year Award
The nomination process for the Midway University/KHSAA Female Student-Athlete of the Year among Field Hockey participants for 2020-2021 is now open.
This award is based on athletic and academic achievement as well as community service and leadership. The link to the application contains additional criteria and a form to nominate one participant from each 2020-2021 team. Nominations must come from a member school, but can be submitted by an administrator, guidance counselor, or coach. Nominations may only be submitted online at https://khsaa.org/ge35-midway-university-khsaa-female-student-athlete-of-the-year-nomination-form/.
The winner will be announced early in the postseason and recognized at an awards event at Midway University in early summer 2021. Golf – Logan Liles (Lewis County)
Liles qualified for the KHSAA State Tournament two years in a row, as an eighth and ninth grader. He is currently ranked sixth in the state and has 28 KY JR PGA Tour wins. A three-time All-Region selection, Liles has five high school invitational wins so far in his career. Off the course, he plays guitar regularly at his community church, helps chaperone birthday parties for younger kids, assists with volunteer clean up at Camp Kentahan Kids Camp, and was a member of a mission youth team that went to the Dominican. He has a 4.0 GPA and is expected to graduate in 2022.

08/20/20- Board of Control Upholds Decision to Begin Fall Sports September 7

The Board of Control held a virtual Zoom meeting Thursday morning, affirming its July position by a 16-2 vote to begin practice for fall sports on August 24th with competition starting the week of September 7th. The Board considered two other motions during the meeting, both of which would have delayed the start of the fall seasons to varying degrees, but neither motion received enough support for adoption.
The fall sports of Field Hockey, Soccer, Volleyball, Cross Country, and Football can begin official practice August 24, with a restriction of 7.5 hours of practice during the first week (as previously approved by the Board) and full practice starting Monday, August 31.

07/28/20- Board of Control Approves Fall Sports to Begin Practice August 24

The Board of Control conducted a virtual meeting Tuesday morning via Zoom, during which time it addressed the future of the 2020 fall sports season. With 17 members voting in favor (and one member abstaining), the Board approved a plan to leave fall sports in the fall and begin official fall practice on August 24th in Cross Country, Field Hockey, Soccer, Volleyball, and Football, with the first date of competition set for September 11th for Football and September 7th for the remaining fall sports.

Student-athlete participation increased for the third-straight year in Kentucky High School Athletic Association sports and sport-activities to reach record levels in 2019-20. A total of 107,166 rostered participants competed across the KHSAA’s 13 sports and six sport-activities according to information submitted by the membership, surpassing last year’s then-record total of 106,931. 07/21/20 – ‘First Aid, Health and Safety’ Revisions Provide Updated Content for Learning Center Core Course
INDIANAPOLIS, IN (July 21, 2020) — Revisions to “First Aid, Health and Safety” – one of two core courses in the NFHS Learning Center – have been completed to provide relevant, up-to-date content to the 10-unit course. The other core course is “Fundamentals of Coaching.”
From its inception, “First Aid, Health and Safety” was designed by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and the American Red Cross to offer coaches and administrators an overview of first aid. Included in that overview are best practices for the numerous situations in which medical attention may be required.

07/14/20 – Board of Control Revises Divisions to the Sport-Activity of Dance
The Board of Control conducted its first meeting of the 2020-21 academic year on July 10, examining various issues concerning the restart of school-based athletics in relation to the Covid-19 pandemic. During the course of its meeting, the Board approved a recommendation to extend the guidance and allowances for Segment 3 of the document issued for summer play in KHSAA sports and sport-activities through Sunday, August 2, except for the sport of golf.
In other action, the Board approved revisions to the Dance competition rules and designated the competition dances as Jazz, Hip Hop, Pom, and Game Day with no squad size subdivisions.
Additional information will be released to coaches in the annual Dance rules clinic and the event declaration form will be updated in early August.

07/14/20 – NFHS-AMSSM Guidance for Assessing Cardiac Issues in High School Student-Athletes with COVID-19 Infection
INDIANAPOLIS, IN — An expert medical task force appointed by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) has issued guidance for assessing potential cardiac issues in high school student-athletes with COVID-19 infection.
The guidance is included in the “Cardiopulmonary Considerations for High School Student-Athletes During the COVID-19 Pandemic: NFHS-AMSSM Guidance Statement” published in Sports Health (https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/1941738120941490), an online journal of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM).
“COVID-19 has raised many concerns regarding the health and safety of athletes,” said Jonathan Drezner, M.D., director of the University of Washington Medicine Center for Sports Cardiology, past president of the AMSSM and co-chair of the NFHS-AMSSM task force. “The risk of heart and lung involvement is likely related to the severity of the illness. This guidance statement addresses important cardiac considerations and the suggested evaluation of high school student-athletes with past or new COVID-19.”

07/07/20 – NFHS Network Offers Schools Two Free Production Units to Stream Events Through “High School Support Program”
INDIANAPOLIS, IN (July 7, 2020) — As high schools nationwide continue to deal with the fallout from COVID-19 and make plans for the restarting of activities this fall, the NFHS Network – the leader in streaming live and on-demand high school sports – has announced an unprecedented offer for schools that are facing possible attendance restrictions at events during the 2020-21 school year.
Through its High School Support Program, the NFHS Network is offering up to two free Pixellot automated-production units for schools that lack production capabilities to stream events on the NFHS Network.

07/06/20 – ‘COVID-19 for Coaches and Administrators’ Course Now Available from NFHS Learning Center
INDIANAPOLIS, IN (July 6, 2020) — In an effort to address the challenges of returning to high school athletics and activities amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Learning Center has collaborated with the NFHS Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC) to develop a new free online course “COVID-19 for Coaches and Administrators.”
The course includes information from the “Guidance for Opening Up High School Athletics and Activities” document that was released by the NFHS in May for its 51 member state high school associations to consider in restarting high school athletics and other activity programs across the nation.

07/06/20 – High School Field Hockey Eyewear Rule Altered for 2020 Season
INDIANAPOLIS, IN — In response to longstanding concerns regarding the wearing of goggles in high school field hockey, the NFHS Board of Directors approved a change in the eyewear rule that will take effect with the upcoming 2020 season.
Rule 1-6-5 in the NFHS Field Hockey Rules Book, which currently states that “All field players shall wear eye protection that met the ASTM standard for field hockey (2713) at the time of manufacture,” will now state that “Goggles may be worn by all field hockey players.”
In addition to the current rule, an additional note was due to take effect in 2020 as follows: “Beginning in the 2020 fall season, all eye protection shall be permanently labeled with the ASTM 2713 standard for field hockey at the time of manufacture.”

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (June 25, 2020) — “The Collapsed Athlete,” a free online course centered around developing and practicing Emergency Actions Plans (EAP), is the most recently launched course from the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Learning Center.
“The Collapsed Athlete” dives into more than just the importance of EAPs and assigning vital responsibilities to team members. The course also explores how the three H’s – heart, heat and head – factor into potentially fatal injuries and illnesses.
High school students incur serious, life-threatening medical emergencies on a yearly basis while participating in athletics and activities. While the causes of those situations are many and varied, they may be a result of pre-diagnosed medical conditions. Others, however, may be a consequence of the activity, environmental conditions or an unrecognized medical condition.

06/18/20 – NFHS to Halt Printing of Spring Sports Rules Publications; 2020 Rules to be Used in 2021 Season
INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Due to the cancellation of spring sports at high schools across the country, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) will not be publishing new rules (both print and digital) for 2021 in the sports of baseball, softball, track and field, girls lacrosse and boys lacrosse.
Because very few schools were able to compete in these sports prior to the March shutdown of schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic, competition in these sports in 2021 will be conducted under 2020 NFHS rules for baseball, softball, track and field, girls lacrosse and boys lacrosse.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has created the NFHS School Honor Roll, a national recognition program designed to promote professional development for high school coaches through the completion of specific courses through the NFHS Learning Center at www.NFHSLearn.com.
“Education-based programs provide ongoing learning for participating students, and the NFHS School Honor Roll program provides a pathway for coaches within schools to be honored for their involvement in professional development,” said Dan Schuster, NFHS Director of Educational Services.
After filling out an online application, schools can achieve three levels of merit within the NFHS School Honor Roll, which are obtained once 90 percent of a school’s coaches – excluding volunteer coaches – complete various course combinations. 05/11/20 – Game Forfeiture Process Clarified in 2020-21 High School Basketball Rules Changes
INDIANAPOLIS, IN (May 11, 2020) — Beginning next year, high school basketball rules will further clarify when a contest is to be forfeited, including if a qualified individual is not present to coach.
A proposal for a national rule mandating a shot clock as well as a proposal to allow a shot clock by state adoption were not approved.
“Information was given to the Basketball Rules Committee that shared the votes in individual states on how coaches and officials voted in support of or non-support of the shot clock rule,” said Theresia Wynns, NFHS director of sports and liaison to the Basketball Rules Committee. “The conversation among the committee members explored the pros and cons of enacting the proposal as a rule for all states and likewise for state adoption. 04/28/20 – 2020-21 High School Wrestling Rules Changes Address Weigh-In Procedures, Hair-Length Restrictions
INDIANAPOLIS, IN (April 28, 2020) — As the result of a concerted effort to accommodate the growing number of female wrestlers, the 2020-21 high school wrestling rules changes are headlined by significant adjustments to weigh-in protocol and appropriate hair-length requirements.
The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Wrestling Rules Committee met April 5-6 and recommended 11 rules changes to take effect next school year. Mollie Morris (Union County) and Ryan Maynard (Taylor County) have been selected as the recipients of the fifth annual Louis Stout Memorial Scholarships, which would have been presented during the 2020 Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16® at Rupp Arena.
When former Commissioner Louis Stout passed away in 2012, his late widow Anna directed that donations on his behalf go to the Louis Stout Memorial Fund for Students. Mrs. Stout felt this was an opportunity for the KHSAA to honor student-athletes who excel in athletics, academics, school service and community service.
Winners will receive a one-time $2,000 scholarship payable to an institution of higher learning, and were chosen after careful review, with selection criteria based on athletic activities, non-athletic activities, non-school activities and an essay on the role a student-athlete should play in the community.

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles announced the six Kentucky high school student-athletes involved in agriculture that have been named the 2020 Ag Athletes of the Year by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA).

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (April 14, 2020) — Providing more clarity on a proper race finish and official timing procedures are among the noteworthy high school swimming and diving rules changes for the 2020-21 school year.

03/26/20 – Risk Minimization Remains Theme of 2020-21 High School Spirit Rules Changes
INDIANAPOLIS, IN (March 26, 2020) — High school spirit rules changes for the 2020-21 school year remain centered on increasing safety for cheerleading and dance teams across the country.
This year, minimizing injury risk for stunting personnel and during inversions and releases were among the 16 rules changes recommended by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Spirit Rules Committee, which met February 10-11 in Orlando, Florida. All changes recommended by the committee were approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

03/25/20 – Officiating Courses Available for Free Through July 1 on the NFHS Learning Center
INDIANAPOLIS, IN (March 25, 2020) — Current high school sports officials, as well as individuals interested in joining the officiating ranks, will be able to access online education courses on the NFHS Learning Center for free through July 1.
Since many individuals are at home for an indefinite period of time due to the current worldwide health crisis, the NFHS has decided to make its 11 sports officiating courses available for free on the Learning Center at www.NFHSLearn.com.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (March 9, 2020) – Seven outstanding former high school athletes highlight the 2020 class of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) National High School Hall of Fame, including three who went on to earn gold medals in the Olympics and four others who excelled in professional football, basketball and baseball.
Joining the seven former athletes in this year’s class are three highly successful high school coaches, one former state association administrator and one speech and debate coach in the performing arts area. The 12 honorees will be inducted July 1 at the 38th induction ceremony of the National High School Hall of Fame, which will be held at the NFHS Summer Meeting in Denver, Colorado.

02/19/20 – Board of Control Votes to Keep Field Hockey as a KHSAA-Sanctioned Sport

The Board of Control approved a motion during Wednesday’s meeting at the KHSAA Offices for the Association to continue offering Field Hockey as a sanctioned-sport. The vote followed a planned review and evaluation of the feasibility and growth of field hockey and preliminary discussion during the Board’s January meeting.
Included in the rationale for continuing to sanction field hockey were the facts that (1) there is no negative financial impact for the Association, and (2) the sport had been played for nearly 50 years when the KHSAA first adopted it as a sanctioned championship in 2014. 02/19/20 – Pannell Swim Shop/KHSAA State Swimming & Diving Championships Head to UK Thursday

The Pannell Swim Shop/KHSAA State Swimming & Diving Championships will have a different look this year, with the event moving to the Lancaster Aquatic Center on the University of Kentucky campus. The state swim meet was last held at the Lancaster Aquatic Center in 2006 and spent the last 13 years at the University of Louisville’s Ralph Wright Natatorium.
Fans attending this week’s Pannell Swim Shop/KHSAA State Swimming & Diving Championships should be advised that backpacks may not be brought into the Lancaster Aquatics Center by the general public per campus policy (http://bit.ly/38IVMou).

02/18/20 – 2020 Sweet 16® Online Media Credentialing System
The media credentialing system for the 2020 Mingua Beef Jerky/KHSAA Girls’ and Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Boys’ Sweet Sixteen® State Basketball Tournaments is now available online, and can be accessed by going to credentials.khsaa.org. Both of this year’s events will be held at Rupp Arena, with the girls playing March 11-15, followed by the boys’ tournament March 18-22.
The deadline to apply for credentials is 5 p.m. on the Monday prior to each respective tournament – March 9 for the Girls’ Sweet 16® and March 16 for the Boys.

02/17/20 – Dropped Ball Procedure Amended in High School Soccer
INDIANAPOLIS, IN (February 14, 2020) – Beginning next season, changes to the conditions and procedure for restarting play with a dropped ball will take effect in high school soccer.
The dropped ball procedure was among 15 rules changes made by the NFHS Soccer Rules Committee at its January 20-22 meeting in Indianapolis and subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.
When a ball is caused to go out of bounds due to a simultaneous touch, Rules 9-2-2 and 9-2-3 now stipulate a referee will restart play with a dropped ball to one player of the team that last possessed the ball before going out of play. Previously, simultaneous touch resulted in any number of players contesting a dropped ball to restart play.

02/06/20 – Additional Timing Changes on Play Clock Approved in High School Football Rules
INDIANAPOLIS, IN (February 6, 2020) — In an effort to eliminate a potential timing advantage gained by the defensive team in high school football, the play clock will be set to 40 seconds – effective with the 2020 season – when an official’s time-out is taken for an injury to a defensive player or a defensive player has an equipment issue.
This change was one of six rules revisions recommended by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Football Rules Committee at its January 12-14 meeting in Indianapolis. All recommended changes were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (February 6, 2020) — High school field hockey games will be played in four quarters instead of two halves beginning with the 2020 season.
This significant change was one of several rules revisions recommended by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Field Hockey Rules Committee at its January 13-15 meeting in Indianapolis. All rules changes were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.
“The NFHS Field Hockey Rules Committee continues to strive to find ways to improve the ease and use of the rules for officials and coaches, which is evident in many of the changes made for the 2020 field hockey season,” said Julie Cochran, NFHS director of sports and liaison to the NFHS Field Hockey Rules Committee.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (January 30, 2020) — Revised rules for roster submissions and penalties assessed to the team bench are among the most prominent high school volleyball rules changes for the upcoming 2020-21 season.
At its annual meeting January 5-7 in downtown Indianapolis, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Volleyball Rules Committee recommended six rules changes that were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

Following the completion of the 2019 KHSAA Football season, the Association has chosen the finalists for the sport’s Official of the Year Award. Of the 938 licensed officials in football, Shaun Williams (Lewisport), Jordan Tarrence (Lexington) and Gary Wise (Louisville) were chosen as finalists with Williams selected as the 2019 KHSAA Football Official of the Year.
The KHSAA will honor the top licensed officials for the 2019-20 season during the course of the year, with the honorees for each sport chosen in the weeks immediately following each respective sport’s championship. Finalists in each sport are selected through a combination of not only on-field/court performance but local association activity and leadership, training efforts and the mentoring of newer officials.

01/28/20 – State Wrestling Coaches Credentials
The KHSAA wants to remind Superintendents, Principals, Athletic Directors and Coaches about gaining access to the competition floor and coaches’ corner at the state championships for Wrestling.
As has been done in previous years, coaches’ certifications will be checked in order to obtain a coaching credential or complimentary access to the tournament.
- Coaches need to be Bylaw 25 certified and be sure all requirements are up to date.
- This requirement includes being current on the rules clinic, sports safety course and a valid date entered for the expiration of CPR certification

01/27/20 – PlayVS/KHSAA Esports Winter State Championship Decided Thursday at UK

State Champions will be crowned in Rocket League and League of Legends on Thursday, Jan. 30 when the PlayVS/KHSAA Esports Winter State Championship takes place at the Gatton Student Center on the University of Kentucky campus.

The KHSAA’s online media credentialing system for the Winter Sports Championships (Bowling, Wrestling, Swimming & Diving) is now live, and can be accessed by going to credentials.khsaa.org.
Credentials to each KHSAA state championship event are issued by the KHSAA to working members of the media that regularly cover high school athletics. Credentials must be requested prior to the established deadline for each sport through the online credentialing system (credentials.khsaa.org).
Credentials should be requested by the sports editor/director for all members of his/her organization needing to attend an event. Credentials for freelance photographers and stringers must be requested by the sports editor/director at the outlet the freelancer will be representing. Media outlets are responsible for the actions of all individuals representing their organization, including compliance with KHSAA policies and procedures. 01/16/20 – 2018-19 National Coaches of the Year Selected by NFHS Coaches Association
INDIANAPOLIS, IN (January 16, 2020)— Twenty-three high school coaches from across the country have been selected as 2019 National Coaches of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Coaches Association.
The NFHS, which has been recognizing coaches through an awards program since 1982, honors coaches in the top 10 girls sports and top 10 boys sports (by participation numbers), and in two “other” sports – one for boys and one for girls – that are not included in the top 10 listings. The NFHS also recognizes a spirit coach as a separate award category. Winners of NFHS awards must be active coaches during the year for which they receive their award. The first statistical leader reports of the 2019-20 season for girls’ and boys’ basketball have been posted at KHSAA.org. The leader reports will be updated every day at approximately 3 a.m., and will include all teams missing stats for no more than two games.
Statistical entry is required of all member schools, and those failing to meet the requirement to enter stats are subject to penalties from the Commissioner, including fines and other actions within the constraints of Bylaw 27. Member schools are solely responsible for submitting statistical information. If a school or individual is omitted, or information is not updated, that means the team in question did not update its statistics through the KHSAA’s online system prior to the deadline.

The KHSAA is excited to open the nomination process for the Midway University/KHSAA Male Student-Athlete of the Year among Wrestling participants for 2019-2020. Midway University has expanded its partnership to include both male and female nominations for 2019-2020.
This award is based on athletic and academic achievement as well as community service and leadership. The link to the application contains additional criteria and a form to nominate one participant from each 2019-2020 team. Following the completion of the 2019 KHSAA Volleyball season, the Association has chosen the finalists for the sport’s Official of the Year Award. Of the 559 licensed officials in volleyball, Mike Wooten (Paducah) and Doug Grinnell (Elizabethtown) were chosen as finalists with Wooten selected as the 2019 KHSAA Volleyball Official of the Year.
The KHSAA will honor the top licensed officials for the 2019-20 season during the course of the year, with the honorees for each sport chosen in the weeks immediately following each respective sport’s championship. Finalists in each sport are selected through a combination of not only on-field/court performance but local association activity and leadership, training efforts and the mentoring of newer officials.

11/21/19 – NFHS Announces Plans to Launch “Center for Officials Services”
INDIANAPOLIS, IN (November 21, 2019) — The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) will be launching an online platform for high school officials, effective with the 2020-21 school year.
The NFHS Center for Officials Services, with its technology platform created by DragonFly Athletics of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, will offer a variety of services for officials, including registration, assessment, assignments and payments. In addition, NFHS Officials Association members will be able to access NFHS rules exams, NFHS digital rules books and case books, insurance information, video content and sport-specific officiating courses on the NFHS Learning Center.
In time, it is anticipated that the NFHS Center for Officials Services database would include all registered officials in NFHS member state associations. As a result, this new technology would assist the NFHS as it continues to recruit new officials through its #BecomeAnOfficial program as well as ongoing efforts to retain individuals who officiate high school contests.

The Board of Control conducted a lengthy review of the recently completed fall sports and each respective championship, while also discussing ongoing operations and issues during the course of its meeting at the KHSAA Offices on Tuesday. Among the actionable items in the meeting, the Board addressed the format of the Swimming & Diving postseason meets and the future placement for Sayre football.
Over the last few years, staff received multiple requests to restructure region diving competitions due in part to facility issues and a shortage of qualified judges without a connection to a specific school. The situation was exacerbated by the expansion to 40 qualifiers in the state diving competition, with 22 at-large participants potentially leading to competitive issues if there is a perception that the judges are not consistent and objective at each meet.

The 2019 KHSAA State Volleyball Tournament gets underway Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. when Henderson County takes on Greenwood at Valley High School. The last of eight opening round matches will take place at 8 p.m. with Rowan County facing Corbin. The Kentucky High School Athletic Association will induct its Class of 2020 into the Dawahares/KHSAA Hall of Fame presented by Roberts Insurance on Saturday, May 30, 2020, at the Embassy Suites Lexington. This year’s 12-member class will be the 33rd inducted into the Dawahares/KHSAA Hall of Fame, and consists of former high school coaches, athletes, officials, administrators, and contributors. The Class of 2020 will also be recognized during the semifinals of the 2020 Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16®. The induction of the 12-member Class of 2020 will bring the total number of honorees in the Hall of Fame to 491.

The KHSAA State Cross Country Championships return to the Kentucky Horse Park this Saturday with the first race of the day slated for 9:30 a.m. A full meet schedule is available on the KHSAA website at http://bit.ly/2JA6Tpf, with advance tickets available for purchase at https://gofan.co/app/school/KHSAA.
The 1A Girls’ race opens the day’s festivities at 9:30 a.m., followed by the 1A Boys at 10:15 a.m. The Class 2A meet will follow with the girls at 11:30 a.m. and the boys at 12:15 p.m. The 3A Girls’ Championship is set for 1:30 p.m., with the 3A Boys closing out the day’s events at 2:15 p.m.

The esports registration deadline has been extended to Friday, October 25th. If your school intends to compete in this Fall 2019 season, there are a couple of steps that must be taken before that date to ensure your teams are put on the schedule.
- Have your principal fill out the authorization form distributed earlier this week by the Commissioner – https://schools.khsaa.org/es101-esports-school-permission-form/
- Add an esports team, coach and student-athletes in the schools.khsaa.org subdomain
- Complete registration through PlayVS and activate your teams
Follow these steps to complete the registration process through PlayVS.
- Verify students, after checking their names and emails for accuracy
- Purchase a Season Pass for verified players and select an esport for them to play
- From the Manage Teams tab, create and name your team
- Then, place verified players on your roster

We have had some inquiries regarding the modified NFHS Wrestling Rule 4-1-4 and its intent and purpose. The NFHS Wrestling Rules Committee’s purpose was to restrict non-school promotional references from appearing on the wrestling ear guards that were not issued by the school. This practice was turning high school wrestlers into “walking billboards”. Items such as pop culture or movie references (Avengers, Superman), corporate sponsorships (Hines Lumber, McDonalds), advocacy interests (Save the Whales, Protect the Bees), biblical references (John 3:16, 2 Tim 1:17) and college logos (Michigan, Iowa) as a few examples of some of the items that are appearing on the ear guards.
