The Kentucky High School Athletic Association and Midway University are expanding their partnership in the Midway University/KHSAA Student-Athlete of the Year Awards program to include recognition for males beginning in the fall of 2019. “We value our partnership with the KHSAA as we expand our on-campus offerings to include male students and male sports and look forward to continuing to get our message out across the Commonwealth to even more student-athletes and potential students,” said Midway University President John P. All state championship anglers must pre-register online at HighSchoolFishing.org by May 7th. This will help confirm your participation and allow for boat captain changes if different from regional events. Only those teams who have qualified for the state championship will be able to register. The 2019 KHSAA State Bass Fishing Championship will be held May 10-11 at Kentucky Dam Marina.

“Upon review of the regional championship results and following consultation with our partners at Fishing League Worldwide (FLW), I feel comfortable that we can utilize three flights of thirty boats each and not impact the competition experience or our efforts to minimize risk,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “Assistant Commissioner Mike Barren and the rest of our staff involved with […]

04/09/18- Implementation of HB290, Play Against Home School Individuals

Archery Blog Updates

During its 2018 Regular Session, both houses of the Kentucky General Assembly approved HB290, and the bill was signed into law by the governor on April 2. See the full text of the bill at http://www.lrc.ky.gov/recorddocuments/bill/18RS/HB290/HCS1.pdf with a digest of the proceedings at http://www.lrc.ky.gov/record/18RS/HB290.htm. With the signing by the governor, the bill will go into effect on July 1, 2018, for KHSAA member schools.

The bill will necessitate an amendment to KHSAA Bylaw 22, Sec. 1 (listed at https://khsaa.org/handbook/bylaws/20172018/bylaw22.pdf) and this amendment will be done through the normal regulatory approval process this spring. Member schools will be able to engage in competition, should they choose, against homeschool units or involve homeschool students enrolled in Kentucky beginning with the 2018-2019 school year.

  • This change DOES NOT allow KHSAA member schools to participate against other schools located in located in Kentucky that have chosen not to join the KHSAA.

04/09/18- Reminder About Corresponding Date Rollover – 2018-19 through 2021-22 And Changes in Basketball, Tennis and Track & Field Schedules

Archery Blog Updates

This reminder is for all member schools as scheduling decisions are made relative to 2018-2019 and beyond. Athletic Directors and others scheduling contests should pay close attention to the information at https://khsaa.org/general/resources/corresponding-dates/. These charts are invaluable when scheduling year-to-year. It is critical that athletic directors and athletic administrators ensure that this information is passed on to any coach that assists with scheduling in any sport.

Events that are always held the same time each year, or contests played between opponents regularly at the same time each year, should use the corresponding week numbers for reference when choosing dates, not the relative position within the month. In other words, schools should think in terms of the game always being in week 12, 13, 14, etc., rather than the last weekend in December or first weekend in March. Using the corresponding week numbers will help prevent inadvertent scheduling issues.

For example, a quick look at https://khsaa.org/handbook/correspondingdates/federationcalendar.pdf illustrates a […]

In addition, the girls’ basketball tournament was previously awarded to Rupp Arena in 2019 and 2020, with an option to extend to 2021 and 2022.

Based upon recommendation from staff, the Board approved a proposal to shift the start of the basketball season forward one week, for the 2020-21 season only, and adjust the corresponding dates calendar accordingly. The Commissioner was also authorized to begin […]

03/06/15 – Clarification Regarding Bass Fishing State Tournament

Bass Fishing Blog Updates

This message is to clarify the date of the State Tournament for the sport activity of Bass Fishing. As posted on the KHSAA website and in one of the slides on the Online Rules Clinic, the date of the Bass Fishing State Tournament is May 15th and 16th at Kentucky Lake. During the video introduction in the clinic the date of the State Tournament is erroneously stated as being on May 8th and 9th. The link below that was posted in September and the slide on the rules clinic have the correct dates of May 15th and 16th. Sorry for the confusion.

03/25/13 – Clarification on Cold Weather Participation

Athletic Department Blog Updates

The office has received several calls from people asking about a “Cold Weather Index” to parallel the existing Heat Index rules and regulations. At the present time, such an index does not exist in terms of a policy to eliminate participation at certain temperature combinations. However, the NFHS Sports Medicine Committee, as part of its 4th edition Sports Medicine Handbook provided to the member schools, has set up best practices documentation and suggestions to dealing with extreme cold. The recommendations are posted on the KHSAA web site at /sportsmedicine/nfhs/coldweatherrecommendations.pdf Please feel free to use this valuable resource document. If you need additional copies of the Sports Medicine Handbook, contact Marilyn Mitchell (mmitchell@khsaa.org) at the KHSAA offices.

05/09/12 – Update on New Bass Fishing Championship

Bass Fishing Blog Updates

Ahoy Mates! Since the announcement in February that we were sponsoring a bass fishing championship, the questions have rolled in fast and furious. We have worked with the great folks at FLW, as well as very helpful reps of BASS Federation Nation and other groups to try and ensure that the championship is done in a manner that will stir excitement for all, ensure safety for all competitors, a participation opportunity for students, not effect those already participating in fishing activities, and promote an awareness of the great natural resources we have available. With that in mind, this is the first of a series of posts as we work toward implementation of our first championship in April of 2013. As more becomes available, we will post both here and online on our web site.

Thanks!!
