12/09/14 – KHSAA Issues Clarification on Penalty Near End of Corbin/Central Playoff Contest
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December 9, 2014
Following the conclusion of the Corbin vs. Central playoff contest on November 21, the KHSAA has received several inquiries regarding a penalty assessed near the end of the game. On the last timed down, a long pass was completed by Central and a face mask foul was called at the end of the play. The play, which was widely scene on ESPN SportsCenter and in other media outlets, showed a Central player losing possession of the football, with the ball striking his foot before being caught by another Central player who was subsequently tackled near the sideline as time expired. On the tackle, the game officials called a foul for tackling by the face mask, and administered the penalty against Corbin and awarded Central one untimed down.
“As the video shows, the catch and run were legal and at the end of the play, the Corbin player tackled the Central runner […]
12/08/14 – KHSAA Sanctions Football Officials, Officials’ Association for Rule Misapplication
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December 8, 2014
The KHSAA has assessed sanctions against a crew of five football officials and an adjustment to the schedule for future playoff assignments for the local association involved, following a misapplication of the playing rules in the semifinal round playoff game between DeSales and Murray on November 28. During the second quarter of the game, on a play when Murray scored a touchdown, the covering official called a foul against a coach from Murray when the covering official made contact with the coach in an area where coaches are not permitted during play. The officials then mis-administered the playing rules by assessing the penalty from the spot of the foul and not allowing the touchdown.
“The foul occurred as the covering official was making his way up the sideline covering the play and made contact with a coach in the two-yard restricted area where coaches are not permitted,” stated KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett, […]

The KHSAA is grateful to be able to participate.
Again this year, for the first round of the football playoffs at home sites November 7 and 8, each home school is asked to request all veterans and active duty military in attendance to stand and be recognized for their contributions.

10/21/14-Information from American Sports Builders, RE: Crumb Rubber
The following information was provided to the KHSAA by representatives of the NFHS in Indianapolis. This is provided for your information.

ASBA Response to NBC National News Story on Health Effects of Crumb Rubber in Synthetic Turf
Last week a story aired on The NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams and on the Today Show concerning a potential connection between crumb rubber and higher rates of Cancer in soccer goalkeepers. Click here to view a video of that story.
ASBA has relied on and will continue to rely on research of manufacturers and suppliers of these products and independent researchers. The overwhelming weight of the existing research indicates that these products are safe for use, which is consistent with the conclusions of the large numbers of governmental bodies that have considered the issue. In the absence of further scientific evidence on the issue, ASBA will continue to rely on […]

09/29/14 – Four Measures Receive Approval at Annual Meeting
At the Annual Meeting of the membership of the KHSAA, four proposals received the votes necessary for approval. The membership was represented by 215 of the schools (out of 277 members), a turnout very comparable to the past few years, with 144 votes (2/3 majority of those present) being required for a proposal to receive approval.
The proposals will now go to the KHSAA Board of Control for a formal recommendation to the Kentucky Board of Education. Absent any procedural snags, the proposals will go to the Kentucky Board of Education for a two-meeting consideration phase, with final approval by the Kentucky Board of Education anticipated in April. Following that consideration, if approved, the proposals will go to the Regulation Review Subcommittee of the Kentucky General Assembly and the Interim Education Committee for final approval with a hopeful effective date of August 1, 2015 for any changes.
The following was the voting for those issues. […]
09/17/2014 – Proposal by Proposal Analysis of 2014 Annual Meeting Proposals
This is the second part of a two-part effort to talk about the 2014 KHSAA Annual Meeting. Because of the vast turnover in athletic administrators this year, and in order to help you prepare, this information is being sent well in advance of this year’s meeting to allow for review and discussion. Please feel free to contact the office with any questions.
Final preparations are underway for the 2014 Annual Meeting at the Lexington Center on September 29. Staff is busily making final updates to the documents related to the meeting, and posting them on the KHSAA website with updates nearly every day.
During the morning sessions, there are three great workshops.
- Veteran Athletic Directors and sport-activity participants will have a panel discussion regarding adding new programs, including the obstacles you might face from school administration, your local board or school based group, and your community;
- Dan Schuester of the NFHS Coaching Education Department […]
09/17/14 – Reminder about Importance of Annual Meeting
Love this time of year. School has started, the fields and courts are in use every night, and we get to continuously hear about the great things done by our student-athletes. And again this year, we are privileged to have just completed another circuit around the state holding regional meetings about KHSAA operations, online data management and Title IX.
But now its time to deal with some of the “business issues” surrounding the KHSAA. And a lot of that business is accomplished through the Annual Meeting. Truth be told, other than the championship final events and recognition ceremonies, this event continues to be one of my favorites. Our staff gets to sit down and meet with those people in the trenches at the local schools, and talk about issues facing both groups. Our philosophies and perspectives are different, so too naturally are our opinions.
This two-part article will attempt to first lay the groundwork for […]

09/05/14 – Reminder about Ruling Officers for 2014-15
The first line of rulings concerning KHSAA Bylaws 2 through 14 is to contact the ruling officer with information. In many cases, that consists of sending in a requisite form, as well as any other information that might be needed. For the 2014-15 school year, several assignments of ruling officers have changed within the office, and this information is provided to assist you in managing your athletic program. The ruling officers are assigned by region to ensure consistent communication. in 95% of the cases, the primary ruling officer is the person a school representative should contact with information, requests, etc. The secondary ruling officers are designated to ensure that if the primary is out of town or involved with an event, every effort can be made to issue rulings in an expedited manner once all material is received.
