05/14/18 – New Triple Threat Award Recognizes Three-Season, Multi-Sport Athletes
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 14, 2018
In an effort to continue the national emphasis and the KHSAA’s own efforts to de-emphasize sports specialization in the athletic culture, the Association recently launched the “Triple Threat Award” program to recognize those students who participate in high school athletics year round.
The award, which is given to student-athletes who participate in a KHSAA sport or sport-activity on the varsity level during each season of the academic year (fall/winters/spring), will be presented to a total of 1,814 student-athletes for 2017-18.
The awards are based solely on each member school’s rosters that were submitted through the KHSAA’s online system, as that is the only permitted determinant for athletic eligibility (including team eligibility).
A closer look at the breakdown of honorees for the 2017-18 academic year shows that:

[…]01/19/18 – Become an Official – Stay Connected to High School Sports
By Bob Gardner, Executive Director of the National Federation of State High School Associations and Julian Tackett, Commissioner of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.
They don’t normally make the headlines, their names are not in the box scores unless at the very bottom, and they don’t make the all-star teams, but perhaps the most essential individuals in high school sports are the contest officials.
These individuals are so important that, in fact, there would be no organized competitive sports at the high school level without the men and women who officiate these contests every day across the country. Subtract the dedicated men and women who officiate high school sports and competitive sports would no longer be organized; they would be chaotic. As many have stated, without officials, it is simply recess.
In some areas, high school officials are retiring faster than new licenses are being issued. And junior varsity, freshmen, and middle school games […]

11/09/17- Bylaw 9 Rulings
Recently, the ruling officer for Bylaw 9 handed down sanctions to student-athletes from Lafayette, Frederick Douglass, Scott County, Montgomery County and South Laurel after school administrators proactively self-reported violations to the Association. The violations centered around an organized basketball contest involving students in member schools after the start of school but prior to the first day of allowable practice.
The KHSAA enforces the rules its membership approves, and though the event in question resulted in a minimal penalty (a one-game suspension) for the participating student-athletes, the Bylaw 9 violation is hardly unique to this specific event. Several other events in various parts of the state resulted in similar sanctions as required by the rule. Despite the constant education efforts of Association staff, this situation could have easily been avoided had adjustments been made to the event’s format, setup and participant composition. The rule is well known to the athletes, member school coaches, member school athletic […]
11/08/17- High School Playoff Games Again Asked to Honor Veterans at Week 2 Games
Every high school hosting a KHSAA football playoff game is again asked to honor all veterans and active duty military at events near Veteran’s Day. This is a great way to recognize our veterans and active duty military and hopefully reinforce the importance of their sacrifices and the meaning of Veteran’s Day. The KHSAA is grateful to be able to participate again during 2017.
For the second round of the football playoffs at home sites November 10, each host school is asked to request all veterans and active duty military in attendance to stand and be recognized for their contributions.
The KHSAA is certainly proud to be a part of this recognition and hopeful that this simple acknowledgment will convey a powerful message of thanks on the part of the school and the community in general.

08/16/17 – High School Activities Bring Communities Together!
By Bob Gardner, Executive Director of the National Federation of State High School Associations and Julian Tackett, Commissioner of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.
Tailgates. Pep rallies. Friday night lights. The new school year is here! And that’s exciting news for student-athletes and high school sports fans alike.
Research shows that being a student-athlete is about a lot more than fun and games. It teaches important life lessons, too. In fact, high school athletes not only have higher grade point averages and fewer school absences than non-athletes, they also develop the kind of work habits and self-discipline skills that help them become more responsible and productive community members.
Attending high school sporting events teaches important life lessons, too.
Among them, it teaches that we can live in different communities, come from different backgrounds, faiths, and cultures, cheer for different teams, and still have a common bond.
That’s why attending the activities hosted by your […]

Statement of the Commissioner’s Office Regarding Class 3A Track and Field Meet Suspension and Termination

At that time, five heats were remaining in the 4×400 relays, as one heat of the girls’ 4×400 had been conducted and the runners for the second heat were in the starting blocks. In addition, the girls’ triple jump was stopped with the top two individuals shy of their sixth jump. 01/12/17 – Board of Control Addresses Alignment Issues, Archery Championship
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 12, 2017
During the course of its regularly scheduled meeting at the KHSAA Offices on Thursday, the Board of Control addressed alignment issues and championship details in several sports, while also approving a requested new trial pilot program for the 15th Region Tournament.
Following the consolidation of South Floyd and Allen Central High Schools, changes were needed in the basketball alignment (and subsequently the alignments in baseball, softball and volleyball) for the 15th Region. KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett attended a meeting of the Superintendents in the impacted districts on January 9 to review options related to the region. Facing challenges like an imperfect geographically aligned region and a pattern of reduced sport offerings by some schools in the region, there were few obvious non-impactful options available. With that in mind, the Superintendents expressed an interest in a multi-year pilot program where their teams would play one less […]
01/05/17 – First Basketball Stat Leaders Report Released
The first weekly statistical leader reports for girls’ and boys’ basketball have been posted at KHSAA.org. Statistics are compiled weekly throughout the season and will be posted to the KHSAA website each week.
Statistical entry is required of all member schools, and those failing to meet the requirement to enter stats are subject to penalties from the Commissioner, including fines and other actions within the constraints of Bylaw 27. Member schools are solely responsible for submitting statistical information. If a school or individual is omitted, or information is not updated, that means the team in question did not update its statistics through the KHSAA’s online system prior to the deadline.
Based upon recommendations from the Basketball Advisory Committee during its most recent meeting, the fine for schools not in compliance will be doubled for the 2016-17 season, as it creates a competitive imbalance for those that do participate. The requirement to enter statistics, which has been in […]

11/26/16 – Revised and Updated Schedule, 2016 Russell Athletic/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl State Football Finals
With Western Kentucky University’s win tonight at Marshall University combined with Southern Mississippi’s upset win over Louisiana Tech on Friday, WKU has qualified to again host the Conference USA championship game in Bowling Green. The game will be played on Saturday morning, December 3rd at 11 a.m. CT. In addition to its continued sponsorship of Field Hockey, the Board will consider recommendations from staff during its January meeting regarding potential adjustments to the sport’s alignment and state championship format.
The Board also made a determination on Wednesday regarding the future alignment of the yet-to-be-named Fayette County High School, which will open during the 2017-18 academic year. Those placements […]
11/10/16- High School Playoff Games Again Asked to Honor Veterans at Week 2 Games
Through the efforts of a veteran and concerned individual by the name of Robert Williams of Menlo Park, California, there is now a national movement to have every high school and college in the United States honor all veterans and active duty military at events near Veteran’s Day. This is a great way to recognize our veterans and active duty military and hopefully reinforce to all the importance of their sacrifices and the meaning of Veteran’s Day. The KHSAA is grateful to be able to participate again during 2016.
For the second round of the football playoffs at home sites November 11, each home school is asked to request all veterans and active duty military in attendance to stand and be recognized for their contributions.
The KHSAA is certainly proud to be a part of this recognition and hopeful that this simple acknowledgment will convey a powerful message of thanks on the part of the school and […]
