This award is based on athletic and academic achievement as well as community service and leadership. 06/11/22- Kopser, Gloyd Named 2021-22 Midway/KHSAA Student-Athletes of the Year

The 2021-22 Midway University/KHSAA Student-Athlete of the Year awards program culminated this week on the campus of Midway University, as Renae Kopser (Ryle) and Ben Gloyd (Mayfield) were recognized as the overall Student-Athletes of the Year.
Beginning in May of 2016, Midway University started presenting a Female Student-Athlete of the Year award at each KHSAA girls’ state championship event. The awards program was expanded in 2019-20 to include male student-athletes, with Midway honoring a deserving student-athlete in each of the 19 officially recognized KHSAA sports and sport-activities.
The awards are based on athletic and academic achievement as well as community service and leadership, with Midway choosing one overall male and female student-athlete of the year each academic year. School administrators, coaches and athletic directors nominate student-athletes online at KHSAA.org, and the nominees are voted upon by a closed panel consisting of representatives from Midway University.

The 2020-21 Midway University/KHSAA Student-Athlete of the Year awards program culminated on the campus of Midway University on Monday, as Claire Lehmkuhler (Woodford County) and Jackson Smallwood (Grant County) were recognized as the overall Student-Athletes of the Year.
Beginning in May of 2016, Midway University started presenting a Female Student-Athlete of the Year award at each KHSAA girls’ state championship event. The awards program was expanded in 2019-20 to include male student-athletes, with Midway honoring a deserving student-athlete in each of the 19 officially recognized KHSAA sports and sport-activities.

NFHS State Outstanding Service Award Winners
Outstanding Service Awards may be presented in two categories: 1) to individuals to recognize a record of long-standing service and significant contribution to the NFHS within a specific sport; or, 2) to individuals/organizations for services, although not specifically designated, which generally represent a significant contribution to or impact on high school activity programs.
States may nominate one individual per year.

Golf – Logan Liles (Lewis County)
Liles qualified for the KHSAA State Tournament two years in a row, as an eighth and ninth grader. He is currently ranked sixth in the state and has 28 KY JR PGA Tour wins. A three-time All-Region selection, Liles has five high school invitational wins so far in his career. Off the course, he plays guitar regularly at his community church, helps chaperone birthday parties for younger kids, assists with volunteer clean up at Camp Kentahan Kids Camp, and was a member of a mission youth team that went to the Dominican. He has a 4.0 GPA and is expected to graduate in 2022.

09/23/19- KHSAA and Midway University Expand Student-Athlete Awards Program
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 23, 2019
The Kentucky High School Athletic Association and Midway University are expanding their partnership in the Midway University/KHSAA Student-Athlete of the Year Awards program to include recognition for males beginning in the fall of 2019. The program originally began in the spring of 2016 as a way for Midway University to honor female student-athletes, and will now include male and female student-athletes for all KHSAA-sanctioned sports and sport-activities.
“We value our partnership with the KHSAA as we expand our on-campus offerings to include male students and male sports and look forward to continuing to get our message out across the Commonwealth to even more student-athletes and potential students,” said Midway University President John P. Marsden, Ph.D.

Ferguson tabbed Midway University/KHSAA Female Student-Athlete of the Year for 2018-19
June 21, 2019The third annual Midway University/KHSAA Female Student-Athlete of the Year program concluded when the award winners from the past year were invited to campus for a ceremony to announce the overall winner for 2018-19. It was announced at the ceremony that Maci Ferguson (tennis) of Russell High School was named the overall winner for 2018-19.
A 2018 graduate of Russell High School, Ferguson left a lasting impact in her time as a standout for the Red Devils. A two-time Doubles State Champion and a four-time All-State Tennis Team Selection, Ferguson helped lead the Red Devils to five consecutive Region Championships. She also is a three-time Region 16 Player of the Year who also won the 2017 Wendy’s Heisman Award.

Hieneman Named Midway University/KHSAA Female Student-Athlete of the Year for 2017-18
May 18, 2018(Midway, Ky.) – The second annual Midway University/KHSAA Female Student-Athlete of the Year program culminated when award winners from the previous academic year were invited to campus for a ceremony to announce the overall winner for 2017-18. Russell High School’s, Sara Hieneman (softball) was named the overall winner for 2017-18.
Hieneman graduated from Russell High School in 2017 after leaving a lasting mark in her time with the Red Devils. She made the varsity team as a seventh grader and became a starter as an eighth grader. She played all nine positions at some point in her career at Russell High School. She was also named the 2017 Softball Max Preps Team Player of the Year.

May 23, 2017The inaugural yearlong Midway University/KHSAA Female Student-Athlete of the Year program culminated on the campus of Midway University on Monday as Sacred Heart’s Brooke Forde was named the first overall winner. Beginning in May of 2016 with the Bass Fishing State Championship, Midway University presented a Female Student-Athlete of the Year award at each of the KHSAA’s 14 girls’ state championship events, with an overall winner selected following the final championship of the timeframe (2017 State Archery).
The Midway University/KHSAA Female Student-Athlete of the Year award is based upon overall athletic performance (60%), academic achievement (20%), and community service (20%). Students must possess an overall grade point average of 3.0 or better to qualify, and must be academically eligible during the season in which they are nominated. April 18, 2016The Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) is proud to announce Midway University as its first corporate partner to join the Association’s newly created Girls’ Sports Initiative, which aims to showcase and promote girls’ sports in Kentucky. As part of this new venture, one of the first collaborative corporate partnerships of its kind in the country to specifically target girls’ sports, Midway University will establish a Female Student-Athlete of the Year award in each female sport and sport-activity sanctioned by the KHSAA.
