The KHSAA Board of Control conducted its third regularly scheduled meeting of the 2024-25 academic year this week in Lexington, approving alignments for the upcoming inaugural seasons of lacrosse and boys’ volleyball, as well as a handful of alignment revisions across the sport of field hockey, Regions 6-7 of basketball and in Region 1 of soccer.

Lacrosse was approved for an eight-region format and an eight-team postseason state tournament, with the semifinals and finals of both the boys’ and girls’ tournaments culminating at Shelby County and Collins in Shelbyville on May 19-21. Both of these schools have unified lacrosse field markings, which gives the Association tremendous scheduling flexibility to assist with the contests in this first season.

The 2024 KHSAA Girls’ Volleyball State Tournament presented by UK HealthCare will begin at multiple campus sites around the state on Monday and end at a central location in Winchester at George Rogers Clark for the quarterfinal, semifinal and championship rounds this weekend.

First-round matchups begin with Region 15 champion Paintsville (25-11) at Region 13 champion Whitley County (29-10) on Monday at 6 p.m. ET. 10/02/24 – Fall Draw Show to Air Oct. 4 on NFHS Network

Pairings for the 2024 KHSAA Field Hockey, Soccer and Girls’ Volleyball State Tournaments presented by UK HealthCare will be unveiled on Friday, Oct. 4, at 1:30 p.m. ET during the KHSAA’s annual Fall Championship Draw Show.

The 2024 Fall Championship Draw Show will air on khsaa.tv via the NFHS Network at no cost to viewers, live from the KHSAA offices in Lexington.

The 2024 KHSAA Field Hockey State Tournament will begin on Thursday, Oct. 24, with quarterfinal games being played on campus sites. Play continues with the semifinals and championship on Saturday, Oct. 26, and Monday, Oct. 28, at Christian Academy-Louisville.

10/01/24 – KHSAA Combined Participation Tops 115,000 for First Time in 2023-24

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: OCT. 1, 2024

More than 115,000 participants occupied roster spots in KHSAA sports and sport-activities in the 2023-24 school year, marking an all-time record and an increase of more than 5% from the previous year.

A total of 115,608 participants were on rosters for Kentucky high school competition in 2023-24, which is up 5,792 from the previous record of 109,816 set in 2022-23. The latest total includes 63,694 boys and 51,914 girls, a record high for both genders and the first time that girls’ participation has exceeded 50,000.

The 115,608 roster spots were comprised of 86,357 individuals, including 46,635 boys and 39,722 girls.

The 2023-24 total marks a third consecutive increase across KHSAA member schools after numbers briefly declined during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the NFHS High School Athletics Participation Survey, national participation eclipsed the 8-million mark for the first time last school year.

09/26/24 – Board of Control Approves Bass Fishing Site Rotation

The KHSAA Board of Control conducted its second regularly scheduled meeting of the 2024-25 academic year on Thursday in Lexington, approving a four-year site rotation for the Operation UNITE Bass Fishing State Championships presented by UK HealthCare.

The Bass Fishing State Championships will debut at Lake Cumberland in Russell County in 2025 and 2027 and return to Kentucky Lake in Marshall County — where the event has been held for more than a decade since its inception — in 2026 and 2028.

“We have been blessed with tremendous growth since the bass fishing tournament first began in 2013,” said Commissioner Julian Tackett. “The fact that multiple entities are interested in hosting this championship is a testament to the great work of our schools, student-athletes and coaches, as well as our long-time partners at Major League Fishing. The KHSAA’s online media credentialing system for fall state championships (golf, soccer, field hockey, cross country, girls’ volleyball, football, esports) is now live and can be accessed via credentials.khsaa.org.

Credentials to each KHSAA state championship event are issued by the KHSAA to working members of the media who regularly cover high school athletics. Credentials must be requested prior to the established deadline for each sport through the online credentialing system.

Credentials should be requested by the sports editor/director for all members of their organization needing to attend an event. Credentials for freelance photographers and stringers must be requested by the sports editor/director at the outlet the freelancer will be representing. Media outlets are responsible for the actions of all individuals representing their organization, including compliance with KHSAA policies and procedures. RPI is a tool developed for all team sports using the official KHSAA/Riherds Scoreboard data, modeled after, but not identical to, similar measurement tools. It is provided for a variety of reasons, including district tiebreaking and football bracketing, and as a means to increase publicity, interest and promotion of interscholastic athletics. RPI is also used as a tiebreaking/contest-result mechanism to decide seeded district games that are not played by the deadline. 09/10/24 – Girls’ Volleyball Nominations Sought for Midway/KHSAA Student Athlete-of-the-Year

The nomination process for the Midway University/KHSAA Female Student Athlete-of-the-Year among girls’ volleyball participants for 2024-2025 is now open.

This award is based on athletic and academic achievement as well as community service and leadership. The link to the application contains additional criteria and a form to nominate one participant from each 2024-2025 team.

Nominations must come from a member school, but can be submitted by an administrator, guidance counselor, or coach. Nominations may only be submitted online at https://khsaa.org/ge35-midway-university-khsaa-female-student-athlete-of-the-year-nomination-form/.

The winner will be announced early in the postseason and recognized at an awards event at Midway University in June 2025. From the winners selected for each KHSAA championship, one student-athlete will be selected as the 2024-2025 Midway University/KHSAA Student-Athlete of the Year announced at the event. The Board of Control, at its August meeting, revised and finalized the limitation of season for boys’ volleyball beginning in the Spring of 2025.

At its meeting in May the Board had set the match count limit at 18. Upon further review, this was adjusted to permit a total of 25 matches.

08/02/24 – Board of Control Conducts First Meeting of 2024-25

The KHSAA Board of Control conducted its first regularly scheduled meeting of the 2024-25 academic year on Friday in Newport, approving a review of proposals to be considered at the 2024 Annual Meeting and approving competition rules information regarding three sports and two sport-activities.

A two-day series of meetings began with an orientation for new and returning Board members and then launched into the full Board work session on Thursday, followed by the conducting of Friday’s full Board meeting. The Board and staff welcomed new Board members Noel Crum of Stambaugh, Chuck Mullins of Hazard and Coy Samons of Murray, as well as new Assistant Commissioner Abby Jackson.

The 2023-24 Midway University/KHSAA Student-Athlete of the Year awards program culminated Tuesday on the campus of Midway University, as Carlie Thurmond of Bethlehem (Soccer) and Max Germann of Boyle County (Track & Field) were recognized as the overall Student-Athletes of the Year.

Beginning in May 2016, Midway has presented a Female Student-Athlete of the Year award at each KHSAA girls’ state championship event. The awards program was expanded in 2019-20 to include male student-athletes, with Midway honoring a deserving student-athlete in each KHSAA sport and sport-activity.

The awards are based on athletic and academic achievement, as well as community service and leadership, with Midway choosing one overall Male and Female Student-Athlete of the Year each academic year. School administrators, coaches and athletic directors nominate student-athletes, and the nominees are voted upon by a closed panel consisting of representatives from Midway.

The KHSAA Board of Control conducted its final regularly scheduled meeting of the 2023-24 academic year on Wednesday in Lexington, adopting a football alignment effective for the 2025 and 2026 playing seasons. A draft was approved at last February’s regularly scheduled meeting with an allowance for six weeks of feedback from the membership that was shared and publicly available.

The Board reviewed each of the concerns and suggestions brought forth by member schools and approved the following logistically and geographically verifiable moves:

02/08/24 – NFHS Announces Volleyball Playing Rule Changes

Line Judge Procedure Modified in High School Volleyball

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INDIANAPOLIS – Line judges will be required to change sides of the court between sets when teams remain on the same bench. The change in officiating procedure highlights the 2024-25 high school volleyball rules changes.

In all, four rules changes were recommended by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Volleyball Rules Committee at its annual meeting Jan. 7-9. All rules changes were reviewed and approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

Rule 5-9-2b, which outlines line judge responsibilities, includes the new note requiring that they switch sides of the court when, by state association adoption, teams remain on the same bench throughout the match. The corresponding item on the state association adoption chart was also amended to add the requirement, which was added to promote fair officiating.

Each year, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association honors the top officials for the 10 sports in which it licenses officials. Finalists in each sport are selected through a combination of not only on-field performance but local association activity and leadership, training efforts and the mentoring of newer officials.

One official in each sport is named “Outstanding Official of the Year” for their sport in appreciation of their dedication and service to schools and student-athletes across the state. Winners are selected following consultation with local assigning secretaries, veteran officials’ observers, coaches throughout the state and additional staff review.

The Outstanding Official of the Year for the 2023-24 volleyball season is Danny Woosley of Glasgow. Each finalist will receive a commemorative watch and certificate courtesy of the Officials Trust Fund, with the Official of the Year receiving an additional recognition award.

The Board approved the selection of Russell County High School (Regions 1-3), the University of Louisville (Regions 4-6) and Scott High School (Regions 7-9) as 2024 State First Round sites for Swimming and approved revisions to relay card procedures for the regional and state meet rounds to help address facility deck and crowd capacity concerns.

The first official KHSAA statistical leader reports for the 2023 football, volleyball and field hockey seasons, as well as the initial KHSAA Ratings Percentage Index rankings for the 2023 soccer season, have been posted at KHSAA.org.

Initial soccer stat leader reports were unveiled on Aug. 28.

Stat leader reports for all fall sports are updated every day at approximately 3 a.m. ET, including only teams missing stats for no more than two games in soccer, volleyball and field hockey and teams missing stats for no more than one game in football.

Statistical entry is required of all member schools, and those failing to meet the requirement to enter stats are subject to penalties from the Commissioner’s office, including fines and other actions within the constraints of Bylaw 27.

Please share this with all members of your fall sports coaching staff, and the coaches of Competitive Cheer and Dance. This post is not intended to be comprehensive regarding all aspects of Bylaw 23, but intended to highlight areas around tryouts.

References for this information come from the Bylaws of the Association, online as part of the KHSAA Handbook. There is not (and has never been) a separate tryout period for fall sports prior to the start of practice. The KHSAA Board of Control conducted its fifth regularly scheduled meeting of the 2022-23 academic year on Wednesday in Lexington, approving the adoption of girls’ wrestling, the solicitation of a site to hold the boys’ and girls’ wrestling tournaments consecutively, specifications for KHSAA Golf State First Round sites and the election of the 2023-24 Board President-Elect.

The adoption of girls’ wrestling will be effective in the 2023-24 academic year. INDIANAPOLIS (Feb. 3, 2023) – The expansion of the coaching zone beyond the end line of the volleyball court and the allowance of one assistant coach to stand and communicate with players headline the new 2023-24 high school volleyball rules changes.

In all, five rules changes were recommended by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Volleyball Rules Committee at its annual meeting Jan. 8-10. All rules changes were reviewed and approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

Rule 2-1-9 was added to define the coaching zone as the area from the libero replacement zone to the area beyond the end line and the sideline extended. 01/18/23 – Board of Control Approves Football Realignment, RPI Revision, Jenkins Placement in Region 14

The KHSAA Board of Control conducted its fourth regularly scheduled meeting of the 2022-23 academic year on Wednesday in Lexington, approving football realignment and revisions to the RPI calculations, as well as the placement of Jenkins in Region 14 for basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball.

The Board’s approved football realignment will be effective during the 2023 and 2024 seasons. The current enrollment data used for the 2023 and 2024 classifications are from the 2019-20 and 2022-23 school years. Following significant discussion, the Board elected to adopt a two-year alignment so that the realignment process could begin anew next year (in conjunction with the receipt of fall 2023 enrollment numbers) to allow completion by February 2024, giving schools more than one year to resolve scheduling issues for 2025 and beyond.

For the third consecutive year, the final rounds of the KHSAA Volleyball State Tournament Presented by UK HealthCare will wrap up at George Rogers Clark in Winchester. Cardinal Arena will host four quarterfinal matches on Thursday, Nov. 3, followed by the semifinals and final on Friday, Nov. 4.

On Wednesday, Oct. 12, the pairings for the 2022 KHSAA Field Hockey, Soccer and Volleyball State Tournaments Presented by UK HealthCare will be revealed during the annual Fall Championship Draw Show at 2 p.m. ET. The show will be broadcast live online by KHSAA.tv through the NFHS Network from the KHSAA office.

The 2022 KHSAA Field Hockey State Tournament will begin on Thursday, Oct. 20, with quarterfinal games being played on campus sites. Play continues with the semifinals and championship on Saturday, Oct. 22, and Monday, Oct. 24, at Christian Academy-Louisville.

The first official KHSAA Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) rankings and the initial statistical leader reports for the 2022 volleyball, soccer and field hockey seasons, as well as the initial statistical leader reports for the 2022 football season, have been posted at KHSAA.org.

As detailed to school administrators during recently concluded regional meetings, the first official football RPI rankings will be released at the start of week 6.

RPI is a tool developed for all team sports by using the official KHSAA/Riherds Scoreboard data. It is provided for a variety of reasons, including district tiebreaking and football bracketing, and as a means to locally increase publicity, interest and promotion. The RPI is also to be used as a tiebreaking/contest result mechanism to decide seeded district games not played by the deadline. The Part 2 Exams will be open until 11:59 p.m. (ET) based on the following schedules.

There are no extensions or opportunities to pay a late fee and complete the exam outside of the window listed above.

The 2021-22 Midway University/KHSAA Student-Athlete of the Year awards program culminated this week on the campus of Midway University, as Renae Kopser (Ryle) and Ben Gloyd (Mayfield) were recognized as the overall Student-Athletes of the Year.

Beginning in May of 2016, Midway University started presenting a Female Student-Athlete of the Year award at each KHSAA girls’ state championship event. The awards program was expanded in 2019-20 to include male student-athletes, with Midway honoring a deserving student-athlete in each of the 19 officially recognized KHSAA sports and sport-activities.

06/09/22 – Volleyball Officials Uniform Update

In 2021, the NFHS volleyball rules concerning the color of the officials’ uniform (Rules 5-3-1, 5-3-1 Notes) changed to allow state association adoption the color may be gray and/or bright blue (cyan) in addition to the traditional white polo-style shirts.

This change was reviewed in the online rules clinic and it was noted that for the 2021 playing season, white would continue to be the color for KHSAA officials. It was also shared that a phase-in approach, as was done in other sports, would then be implemented. Following are the details.

Bright blue (cyan) will eventually be the color of choice following the implementation period. In an effort to keep costs minimal to officials and the need to only maintain one color of shirt, gray will not currently be an option at any time.

05/12/22 – Board of Control approves girls’ basketball hosting extension, volleyball schedule adjustment, state first-round golf format

The KHSAA Board of Control conducted its final regularly scheduled meeting of the 2021-22 academic year this week at the KHSAA Office, approving a variety of items that affect 2022-23 and beyond.

The Board agreed in principle to extend the Girls’ Basketball Sweet 16® host site agreement with Rupp Arena at Central Bank Center through 2028, matching the venue’s current agreement to host the Boys’ Basketball Sweet 16® through the same season.

Rather than directly author any proposed Bylaw changes for this fall, the Board directed the Commissioner to assist member schools in such authorship if so desired by the membership.

The Board adjusted the schedule of dates for the 2022 Volleyball State Championship to assist schools with travel costs in light of weekend housing costs surrounding the 2022 Breeders’ Cup, with the quarterfinal through finals rounds being played on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 3-4.

02/11/22- Relaxed Hair Adornment, Uniform Rules Among Administrative Changes Set for High School Volleyball in 2022

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (February 10, 2022) — Hair adornments such as beads are now legal in high school volleyball as long as they are securely fastened and do not endanger other players. This rule change, along with eliminating manufacturer reference size and quantity restrictions on uniform bottom waistbands, headline new rules adopted for the 2022-23 season.

In all, seven rules changes were recommended by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Volleyball Rules Committee at its annual meeting January 16-18. All rules changes were reviewed and approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

On Wednesday, Oct. 13 the pairings for the 2021 KHSAA Field Hockey, Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer and Volleyball State Tournaments will be revealed during the annual Fall Championship Draw Show at 10 a.m. ET. The show will be broadcast live online by KHSAA.tv through the NFHS Network from the KHSAA offices.

The 2021 KHSAA Field Hockey State Tournament begins on Thursday, Oct. 21 with quarterfinal games being played on campus sites. Play continues with the semifinals and championship on Saturday, Oct. 23 and Monday, Oct. 25 at Christian Academy-Louisville.

10/08/21- Changes in COVID-19 RTA/RTP Implemented Per SMAC Guidance

As they have done since the start of the pandemic, the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC) composed of Kentucky Medical Association (KMA) member doctors has held multiple special meetings to continually review the Return to Play Guidance and Recommendations (RTA/RTP). 09/06/21 – Volleyball Nominations Sought for Midway/KHSAA Student Athlete-of-the-Year Award

The nomination process for the Midway University/KHSAA Male and Female Student-Athlete of the Year among volleyball participants for 2021-2022 is now open.

This award is based on athletic and academic achievement as well as community service and leadership. The link to the application contains additional criteria and a form to nominate one participant from each 2021-2022 team. Nominations must come from a member school, but can be submitted by an administrator, guidance counselor, or coach. The winner will be announced early in the postseason and recognized at an awards event at Midway University in early summer 2022. 09/22/21 – Board of Control Approves Changes to Wrestling Alignment for 2021-22

The Board of Control held its second meeting of the 2021-22 academic year on Wednesday at the KHSAA offices, during which it approved a draft wrestling alignment that will go into effect for the 2021-22 season.

After considering multiple options and reviewing past participation information, the Board approved a Final Alignment Map of Teams to be implemented for 2021-22. The KHSAA website will be updated in the coming days to reflect the adopted alignment.

09/20/21 – Minimum Time Between Contests at Fall District/Region Postseason Events

Per the KHSAA’s “Healthy at Sports” guidance document, a recommended minimum time between the start of contests at the district and regional postseason events has been established. These guidelines will also be utilized in planning KHSAA State Championship Events.

At events where more than two schools are involved, it is recommended for there to be time between contests for egress of fans and participants, potential cleaning of common facilities and restrooms, as well as ingress of the teams for the next contest.

When developing brackets for field hockey and volleyball, there should be a minimum of two hours between the start of contests being held on the same day. For example, if the first match of a district tournament doubleheader is scheduled for 5 p.m., the second match should not be scheduled to begin until at least 7 p.m.

The first official KHSAA Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) standings for the 2021 field hockey, boys’ and girls’ soccer and volleyball seasons have been posted at KHSAA.org.

Football’s RPI rankings will be released for the first time on September 20. Due to the limited number of contests for football compared to the other sports and the application of RPI data on a much more extensive basis as the office maintains the district standings, there will be additional clarification and operations in football that are not necessary in other sports.

The RPI (https://khsaa.org/rpi-ratings-percentage-index/) is a tool developed for all team sports by using the official KHSAA/Riherds Scoreboard data. It is provided for a variety of reasons, including district tiebreaking and bracketing in specific sports, as well as a means to increase publicity, interest and promotion.

The first statistical leader reports of the season for field hockey, football, boys’ and girls’ soccer and volleyball are available to view at KHSAA.org. The reports include all teams missing stats for no more than two games (one in football) and will be updated every day at approximately 3 a.m. ET.

All sports available on the KHSAA/Riherds.com Scoreboard have the ability for member schools to add statistics. Volleyball rounded out the group when its stat entry interface debuted in 2019.

Statistical entry has multiple benefits, including giving member schools an avenue to highlight and promote the accomplishments of their student-athletes, which should be a goal for all involved in school-based sports.

The reports are also a valuable tool for local, statewide and national media to report on the outstanding talent found throughout the state of Kentucky.

08/09/21 – NFHS Officials Part 2 Exam Now Online for FB, FH, SO & VB

Please note that the NFHS Part 2 exams for licensed officials in the sports of Football, Field Hockey, Soccer, and Volleyball are now available online. The Part 2 exams, required for postseason eligibility consideration, will be open until Monday, August 23 at 11:59 p.m. (ET).

The tests will automatically close on Aug. 23 at 11:59 p.m. (ET). Login at https://officials.khsaa.org/authorize/ to take the test. A minimum score of 80 on the exam is required to be considered for assignment to officiate postseason play. The exam is also used for advancements in levels of classification.

First-year officials are not required to take the exam, however, if any first-year official has completed licensing requirements, the test may be taken.

Each year, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association honors the top officials for the 10 sports in which it licenses officials. Finalists in each sport are selected through a combination of not only on-field/court performance but local association activity and leadership, training efforts and the mentoring of newer officials.

With the conclusion of basketball season, member schools are reminded of the regulations regarding off-season play. There have been no additional adjustments enacted, considered or contemplated at this time by the Commissioner’s office or the Board of Control for play by students and participation by coaches. While member schools are expected at all times to adhere to sport mitigation strategies as detailed in the COVID-19 documentation, no further adjustments to Bylaw 23 have been made.

02/04/21 – Religious Headwear Permitted Without State Association Approval in High School Volleyball

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — High school volleyball players will no longer need to obtain state association approval to wear religious headwear during competition. The rule change highlights three changes approved for the 2021-22 season.

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Volleyball Rules Committee conducted its annual meeting January 10-12 in a virtual setting and recommended three rules changes that were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

“The Volleyball Rules Committee strongly considered both the financial impact and participation restrictions COVID-19 had on schools and state associations during the 2020-21 season as they approached the proposed rules changes,” said Lindsey Atkinson, NFHS director of sports and liaison to the Volleyball Rules Committee. “In doing so, the committee focused on rules that make the sport more inclusive by easing the restrictions on religious headwear, provided state associations with more flexibility in regard to officials uniforms, and lessened the penalty for a late lineup.”

11/18/20 – NFHS Learning Center Debuts New Video for Electronic Whistle Use in Volleyball

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — As part of its continued effort to educate officials on new procedures and protocol in officiating, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has debuted a new instructional video on the online NFHS Learning Center – “Official Volleyball Signals Using an Electronic Whistle.”

The “Official Volleyball Signals Using an Electronic Whistle” video provides officials with tips and techniques to assist in creating seamless signal sequences when using an electronic whistle. Supporting information in the video includes examples of various signals conducted by the first and second referees in applying proper mechanics.

Last spring, as COVID-19 information became more prevalent, the NFHS Volleyball Rules Committee promptly responded to help with health and safety concerns in the sport. The KHSAA State Volleyball Championship will debut in a new venue this weekend (Nov. 6-7) as George Rogers Clark High School hosts the remaining rounds of the tournament starting Friday morning. After full consideration of the available data and the recommendations outlined in the KHSAA’s Stage 3 Return To Competition guidelines, the Association has made the determination to move the 2020 State Volleyball Tournament to George Rogers Clark High School in Winchester.

As referenced in the KHSAA guidelines, it is recommended that contests not be played during the following seven-day period in counties where the incidence of COVID-19 exceeds 25 average daily cases per 100,000 population each Monday morning as detailed on the KDPH COVID-19 Dashboard map (listed in Red) at https://bit.ly/2D0K526. The KHSAA Board of Control held its second regularly-scheduled meeting of the 2020-21 academic year Wednesday morning, approving practice and competition dates for the winter sports and sport-activities of basketball, bowling, competitive cheer, dance, swimming & diving, and wrestling.

Bowling is permitted to practice on November 2. Competitive cheer and dance can begin official practice for its seasons this Monday, September 21 with a gradual segmented approach to activity over the next few weeks. Draft guidance for a return to play was published on the KHSAA website yesterday under the COVID-19 Information tab and shared with school administrators. Keep in mind that this guidance is draft as the situation remains fluid as it has been since March and the information is subject to revision.

The KHSAA office has received several inquiries on the Healthy at Sports guidance approved by the KHSAA Board with regard to the maximum contests per week in the sports of Volleyball and Field Hockey and tournament participation.

Volleyball – The limit of matches for the season (not including postseason) is 24 with no more than four (4) matches in a given week. (Sunday to Saturday)

Field Hockey – The limit of matches for the season (not including postseason) is 16 with no more than four (4) matches in a given week. (Sunday to Saturday)

If a school, due to participation in a regular-season multiple-game event (i.e. tournament) exceeds the limit of matches in a given week, such shall not be considered a violation of Bylaw 23 provided the preceding or succeeding week(s) are adjusted to create an appropriate average number of contests of four (4) per week.

08/20/20- Board of Control Upholds Decision to Begin Fall Sports September 7

The Board of Control held a virtual Zoom meeting Thursday morning, affirming its July position by a 16-2 vote to begin practice for fall sports on August 24th with competition starting the week of September 7th. The Board considered two other motions during the meeting, both of which would have delayed the start of the fall seasons to varying degrees, but neither motion received enough support for adoption.

The fall sports of Field Hockey, Soccer, Volleyball, Cross Country, and Football can begin official practice August 24, with a restriction of 7.5 hours of practice during the first week (as previously approved by the Board) and full practice starting Monday, August 31.

The Board of Control conducted a virtual meeting Tuesday morning via Zoom, during which time it addressed the future of the 2020 fall sports season. With 17 members voting in favor (and one member abstaining), the Board approved a plan to leave fall sports in the fall and begin official fall practice on August 24th in Cross Country, Field Hockey, Soccer, Volleyball, and Football, with the first date of competition set for September 11th for Football and September 7th for the remaining fall sports.

Student-athlete participation increased for the third-straight year in Kentucky High School Athletic Association sports and sport-activities to reach record levels in 2019-20. A total of 107,166 rostered participants competed across the KHSAA’s 13 sports and six sport-activities according to information submitted by the membership, surpassing last year’s then-record total of 106,931.
