11/21/2014-Required Wrestling Mat Area
As a part of the Wrestling rules clinic each year, the NFHS lists certain rules that have not changed but should be reviewed and made a “Point of Emphasis” (POE). One such POE this year has resulted in some dialogue among our member school representatives regarding the requirements for our member schools.
Required Safety Mat Area Surrounding Wrestling Mats During Competition (NFHS Rule 2-1-2) states, “The wrestling area of the mat shall be a circular area a minimum of 28 feet in diameter. Surrounding and secured to the wrestling area of the mat shall be a safety mat area of approximately 5 feet wide.”
This means there shall be approximately 5 feet of safety mat area from the out of bounds circle to the nearest obstacle of any kind, i.e., gym floor, tables, chairs, clocks, etc.
The wording “approximately 5 feet” is used because as mats age they may shrink, which could minimally […]

08/16/14 – Reminder about Carryover Ejections from 2013-2014
In several unfortunate situations each year, coaches or athletes with eligibility remaining are ejected near the end of the season, or near the end of the season for violations of Bylaw 15, Sportsmanships. Please note that when that happens, the penalty carries to the next year if the student-athlete remains enrolled, and to the new school if the coach changes jobs/schools.
Please note all rules related to player/coach ejections, including the provisions for varsity and non-varsity ejections, are listed at http://khsaa.org/dq-policy-on-reinstatement-of-disqualified-apolicy-on-reinstatement-of-disqualified-athletes-coaches/, and a complete list from 2013-2014 is listed on the KHSAA website at http://khsaa.org/dq_list_public/. You will need to review this listing to ensure that you properly require athletes and coaches to miss the required contests if in fact they were ejected.
Also note that being ineligible for scrimmages (sitting out) does NOT satisfy any penalty, such must be served at the varsity contest level.
If you have specific questions, please contact Michael Barren (mbarren@khsaa.org) […]

02/12/14 – Wrestling Time Schedule
For nearly a year, the KHSAA staff has been working and preparing for the upcoming state wrestling tournament. After evaluating the last three to four years of tournament schedules and activity, three major problem areas were identified that needed immediate resolution:
- The “break” prior to the last wrestling round had to be eliminated, or certainly minimized. The circus atmosphere that had developed, which some may have viewed as fun, in fact resulted in at least five individuals being hit by thrown objects, including two police officers. Coaches and other adults refused to take charge of the situation, and in fact participated in many cases. And despite having more than double the security staff as had ever been in place in the previous facility, the situation came to a point where the future ability to retain security assistance from trained and sworn police officers was in jeopardy, as well as the future use of this […]

Coaches Passes – Using the Member Schools Athletic Personnel list of Coaches who have completed this year’s online rules clinic and are current in the sports safety course, we will issue floor passes to your school for each of your coaches at no additional charge. 01/30/14 Post Season Information
The information and instructions for the 2014 Regional Tournaments have been posted online. You can access the information by going to the wrestling page of the KHSAA website. All coaches are expected to take the time to read these items carefully, even veteran coaches, as changes have been made this year. Those of you who will serve as Regional Managers will find your instructions have also been posted to the wrestling page.
I would strongly suggest that all competing schools download the files to ensure that you are aware of all KHSAA rules regarding these tournaments. http://khsaa.org/sports/winter/wrestling/ Best of luck to you for the remainder of the season. Keep looking to this blog for further updates as we get closer to the Regional and State Tournaments.01/08/14 Skin Condition Reminder
Happy New Year, I hope your season is going well for you and your team. At this time of year the reports of wrestlers with skin conditions are increasing. I would like to remind each of you to take the necessary steps to aid in the prevention of the spread of these conditions. Coaches please continue to monitor your students and if need be, refer them to a local medical professional. Coaches and officials, please take note that we updated the “Wrestling SKIN CONDITION” form ( WR111) several years ago. We believe it will benefit all parties involved by clearly stipulating weather the condition falls under Rule 4-2-3 (which requires a form to be renewed every Seven days) or Rule 4-2-5 (that allows for valid documentation for the duration of the season). Please take time to make your self familiar with this form. It can be found on the Wrestling page as both a PDF or word doc. Always remember, regardless of documentation, NFHS rule 4-2-4 states: … […]
02/06/14 – Wrestling State Information – Time Schedule
THIS INFORMATION HAS BEEN SUPERSEDED BY ADDITIONAL ACTION REGARDING THE 2014 TOURNAMENT DUE TO SPECIFIC REQUESTS FROM PARTICIPATING COACHES. THIS IS KEPT ON FILE FOR FUTURE REFERENCE IN CASE ISSUES ARE NOT RESOLVED AT THE 2014 EVENT BUT IS NOT IN EFFECT FOR 2014.
The time schedule for the State Wrestling Tournament has been posted online for a few days, but based on a few inquiries, primarily from the Lexington area, it appears there is some misinformation being distributed, and exacting clarification may be helpful.
The staff members that manage this event have consulted a great many groups, and looked at dozens of ideas. They have talked to their peers in other states, other event promoters, coaches, officials and all sorts of other individuals. The Wrestling advisory committee, made up predominantly of coaches at this time, was one of the first groups consulted. That means some suggestions were used, and some […]

11/21/13 – Wrestling Rule Interpretation
We have had a request for a ruling on the use of an ‘MMA Style’ headgear. The ‘MMA Style’ headgear is considered ILLEGAL equipment and is not approved to use in Kentucky per the NFHS. If a contestant shows up with this style headgear during competition then it should be handled as any other ILLEGAL Equipment (Start Injury Time, issue a Technical Violation and they have 1.30 to correct).10/09/13 – Commissioner Issues Clarification about Postgame Activity, Corrections to Erroneous Media and Social Media Reports
First, for those who may choose to read no further, there has never been a ban or prohibition on postgame handshakes or other types of good sporting behavior by the KHSAA, its Commissioner or its Board of Control. Nor has such a ban been proposed. There is no ban or prohibition on such activity today or contemplated for the future.
This message has been composed entirely by the Commissioner of the KHSAA. I do not want any room for misinterpretation or anyone else being accused of being involved. As the Commissioner, I take very seriously my role to ensure clear, concise and accurate communication regarding the expectations for our membership, participants, coaches, officials and all involved.
However, yesterday (10/8), at best a poorly worded and at worst, an incomplete, notice was sent from me to the member schools regarding postgame activity. Regardless of the number of people who had written […]
10/08/13 – Commissioner’s Directive on Postgame Activity
For those that may choose to read only the first few lines, it is worth reiteration. THERE IS NO BAN OR PROHIBITION ON POSTGAME HANDSHAKES. Has not been considered, contemplated or reviewed as an option.
Several sports have “traditions” regarding postgame handshakes, etc. by team members (both en masse and as individuals), but none of them have such action dictated by playing rules. While it is an obvious sign of sportsmanship and civility, many incidents have occurred both in Kentucky (more than two dozen in the last three years in Kentucky alone) and throughout the country, where fights and physical conflicts have broken out during these postgame handshakes. And this is not restricted to specific sports. In our state alone, incidents in soccer, football and volleyball have occurred this fall.
Unfortunately, the adrenaline and effort required to participate in the sport sometimes seems to deplete the supply of judgement available to participants. And this can […]
08/01/13 – Early Planning Notes
With school under way in some of our districts, I realize some of you are trying to finalize your schedules. Two items to keep in mind as you go forward. I know some of you are wanting to get into the NWCA Weight Management website and begin entering your schedules and other data. When the NWCA emails the temporary login information for each of you, I will send it on to you that day. Until then, the site is not open and you will just have to wait on that task. Some of you are new to coaching and the pre-season scrimmages can get tricky if your not careful. Each school is allowed two scrimmages against other schools. Keep in mind they can only be three hours in total length from the first match until the last match is over. Along with that, you must adhere to the recovery time rule between matches. If too […]Current Alignment – Wrestling

Should a school have an athlete finish 1-4 in the region and he/she is unable to compete in the state tournament due to schedule conflicts, injury or other documented reason; the remainder of the bracket will be “rolledup”, and the replacement wrestler seeded fourth. If a bracket position is vacated and unable to be filled by an alternate from the region, the option will roll in random order to another region. Coaches are advised to weigh-in any fifth place regional wrestler in case of replacement the day of the State Tournament. If any of you have a wrestler pull out, please contact this office ASAP so that we may call the next school inline, so that their 5th place finisher may enter the tournament.02/05/13 – Wrestling State Notes 1
Coaches, Suggestions for Housing for the State tournament can be found on the Wrestling page ( http://khsaa.org/sports/winter/wrestling/ ) of our website. Click on the State information link and you will find several links that will help you find accommodations, there is even a direct link to the Clarion Hotel which is serving as our Headquarters Hotel. Several of the area hotels have agreed to a set price for the tournament, so mention that when you call. Advanced Tickets at a discounted price for the Teams. We have tried in the past to do this at the site, the day of the tournament. This does not work. Last year we tried to get you to purchase them online ahead of the tournament and many of you said you don’t have a credit card. This year you MUST fill out the WR120 form ( found on the wrestling page) and mail that, with a check, to my office. We will have the passes in your coaches packets to […]02/4/13 – Ebonite/KHSAA Bowling Championships This Week; Holy Cross (Louisville) Penalized For Bylaw 10 Violation; Regionals Approaching For Wrestling, Swimming & Diving

01/28/13 – Board of Control Approves Basketball Region I, Statewide Wrestling Realignments
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 28, 2013
The KHSAA Board of Control approved new alignments for Basketball Region I and all eight Wrestling regions during its January meeting at the KHSAA office on Monday.
Following the consolidation of schools in McCracken County, KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett and area Board of Control members met with representatives from the first region in Mayfield. With all Region I schools in attendance, the feedback from the meeting was to realign within the region, and not bring additional teams into the region. Three options for realignment were presented following the meeting in Mayfield. On Monday, the Board voted to approve Option A for the 20013-14 season (detailed below), which will also be applied to baseball, softball, soccer and volleyball:
District 1 – Carlisle County, Fulton City, Fulton County, Hickman County
District 2 – Ballard Memorial, Graves County, Mayfield
District 3 – Community Christian, McCracken County, Paducah Tilghman, St. Mary
[…]01/28/13 – Status of Realignment of Wrestling Regions
The Board of Control took final measures to approve a new wrestling alignment for the 2013-14 season, after reviewing input from the member schools to the proposal which was originally recommended on Nov. 12. No changes were made to the original draft. Please refer to the Alingment information found on the Wrestling page of the KHSAA website. http://khsaa.org/wrestling/realignment/draftalignmentofwrestlingteamsfor20132014.pdf01/30/14 – Post Season Information

I would strongly suggest that you as a competing school, download the files to ensure that you are aware of all KHSAA rules regarding these tournaments. http://khsaa.org/sports/winter/wrestling/ Best of luck to you for the remainder of the season. Keep looking to this blog for further updates as we get closer to the […]01/17/13 – Score Clock Promotion
Coaches, I have attached a link to a letter that you can copy and present to wrestling supporters in your area, asking for possible advertisers for the score clocks that we use at the State tournament. In the past, several schools have sold advertisement spots to local business that support wrestling and some have even had their own booster clubs purchase adds in support of their wrestling team. I hope that those of you who have bought advertisement boards in the past will continue this year. Those coaches, who are new, may want to begin a new tradition by having your program prominently displayed in the arena. Please feel free to contact me by email, mbarren.@khsaa.org or phone 859-299-5472, if you have further questions. Thanks again for your support of our tournament. http://www.khsaa.org/wrestling/letterpromoscoreboardads.pdf01/07/13 – Wrestling SKIN CONDITION
We have been contacted in the office that certain skin conditions have been identified at this weekends past tournaments held at multiple sites. I would like to remind each of you to take the necessary steps to aid in the prevention of the spread of these conditions. Coaches please continue to monitor your students and if need be, refer them to a local medical professional. Coaches and officials, please take note that we updated the “Wrestling SKIN CONDITION” form ( WR111) two years ago. I have included a link to our website where you may download and make copies as needed. Always remember, regardless of documentation, NFHS rule 4-2-4 […]01/04/13 – New Mat Offer
As many of you Coaches are aware, we have been very fortunate to have the EZ Flex Sport Mats Company help us with our State Championships by providing the Mats. Many of you have purchased these mats at a savings by not having to pay the shipping and handling charges. This year we have again entered into an agreement with EZ Flex Sport Mats. If you are in the market for a new mat, you may want to see the attached flyer and give Dave a call today! http://khsaa.org/wrestling/ezflexmatsale.pdf12/21/12 – KWOA Member to Officiate FILA Tournament
A KWOA member and KHSAA official, Toska Adams, will be traveling to Kiev, Ukraine this spring with the USA Men’s and Women’s Freestyle Team to officiate. Toska has been the head official at numerous national tournaments. This will be her second overseas trip as a FILA official. In the summer of 2011 she went to Poland with the Men’s and Women’s Freestyle team and officiated. Congratulations Toska! Well done.12/14/12 – Wrestling Ear Guard Interpretation
As a rule reminder I have copied the latest correspondence from the NFHS in regards to Head gear. Key wording is “the uniform shall be worn as intended/designed by the manufacturer”. It has come to my attention that some wrestlers are “twisting the straps” for various reasons and that would not be allowed under this interpretation. Coaches, please be proactive and stop this before the Official has too…
NFHS RULES REVIEW INTERPRETATION
TAPING OF WRESTLING EAR GUARDS
The NFHS Wrestling Rules Committee issued a rules reminder for 2011-12 on wrestling ear guards, specifically as it relates to Rules 4-1-4 and 4-1-5. That rules reminder does not constitute a change in Rules 4-1-4 or 4-1-5; rather, it represents an emphasis in the manner the Committee believes the rules should be administered and enforced. Rule 4-1-4: ART. 4 . . . Wrestlers shall wear wrestling ear guards, which provide:11/26/12 – Basketball and Wrestling Officials Part 2 Test Now Available

This will take you through the steps to reset your password. Good luck!11/15/2012 – Information about Wrestling Realignment for 2013-2014
With the growth of wrestling (more than 15 schools have added in last seven years), and four new programs are starting this year, it is time to realign Wrestling. Many of the regions are taking more than one day to compete and have little room for growth and expansion of new programs. In addition, with the NFHS rules restricting athletes to five bouts in a day (including forfeits), the size of the bracket makes it problematic when they become so large and mandate a second day.
The information about this realignment is at www.khsaa.org/wrestling. Click on the link to Realignment. Commentary and feedback will be accepted from the member schools by clicking this link, http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Wrestling_20132014_Alignment_Survey through January 22, 2013 prior to planned approval of a final alignment by the Board of Control on January 28, 2013.
If you have specific questions, contact Asst. Commissioner Michael Barren at the KHSAA.
07/15/12 – Reminder about Case BL-25-14 (Open Gym/Field), Out of Season Restrictions
Case BL-25-14- What are the restrictions during the school year outside of the defined Limitation of Seasons (off-season) when the school’s team members are participants or school coaches are involved?
Coaching is defined as any activity by the coach at a time the athletes are participating in skills (either preparatory or specific to that sport) in a setting in which skills are taught, refined, or practiced. Coincident participation by a coach and an athlete in a sport such as a golf outing, where the coach and athlete(s) are not entered as a entry or group, or in an activity such as distance running with many runners but no direct coaching, would not specifically be considered coaching.
The “off-season” is the period during the school year for each sport or sport/activity that is outside the defined start and end dates for the sport or sport/activity as detailed in Bylaw 25. The restrictions begin on the first […]
