12/21/12 – Originially posted 10/25/12 – BK Official Scorekeeper Shirts and Running Clock Clarification

Basketball Blog Updates

We have received many calls asking about the official scorekeeper shirt.  The new rule reads that the official scorekeeper must wear a black and white garment to identify themselves at the table for players and officials benefit.  The KHSAA supports the rules of the NFHS and ask that schools make every effort to comply.

This garment may be a black and white sweater, t-shirt, etc.  We recommend an officials shirt as it is the most easily identifiable.  This also allows for an added element of professionalism to your table crew.  It will also be very helpful for players as they report in and for officials as they report to the table.  There will be no penalty for the lack of compliance at this time, but officials may report the non compliance to their assigners.

Running Clock questions have also risen.  To clarify, once the running clock has started it will continue until the games end.  We also […]

12/21/2012 – Reminders about what football gear/equipment can be worn throughout the year

Football Blog Updates

Based on annual inquiries, the following is a reminder to all schools from the Handbook about the wearing of gear for football workouts/practice throughout the year.

What equipment can be worn, what activities can occur, and what restrictions are in place for football practice and the wearing of football gear? The following are the allowances and timelines for the wearing of pads and the conducting of practice based on specific time of the year:

(1) From the team’s elimination from postseason play through the end of the school year with the exception of the official spring practice period, the following stipulations are in place.

a. No football gear, including the helmet, can be worn. This does not preclude the issuance of protective gear to individual athletes for specific singular activities such as an all-star contest or to attend a skills combine; and
b. There is no KHSAA catastrophic insurance during this period.

(2) During […]

12/14/12 – Wrestling Ear Guard Interpretation

Wrestling Blog Updates

As a rule reminder I have copied the latest correspondence from the NFHS in regards to Head gear. Key wording is “the uniform shall be worn as intended/designed by the manufacturer”. It has come to my attention that some wrestlers are “twisting the straps” for various reasons and that would not be allowed under this interpretation. Coaches, please be proactive  and stop this before the Official has too…

NFHS RULES REVIEW INTERPRETATION

TAPING OF WRESTLING EAR GUARDS

The NFHS Wrestling Rules Committee issued a rules reminder for 2011-12 on wrestling ear guards, specifically as it relates to Rules 4-1-4 and 4-1-5.  That rules reminder does not constitute a change in Rules 4-1-4 or 4-1-5; rather, it represents an emphasis in the manner the Committee believes the rules should be administered and enforced. Rule 4-1-4: ART. 4 . . . Wrestlers shall wear wrestling ear guards, which provide:
  • a.    adequate ear protection;
  • b.    […]

Keep in mind, this fall we will play under the change to Rule 4-1 in regards to the color of home jerseys and socks. The home team shall wear solid white jerseys and solid white socks, and the visiting team shall wear dark jerseys and socks.  Also, those players who are getting ready to purchase a new set of shinguards  it is now required that the NOCSAE seal and height range shall be permanently marked on the front of the shinguard.  On a side note, those of you who have players who like to wrap tape on the outside of their socks for various reasons; The KHSAA will require that the color of the tape must match the color of the sock, therefore, only white tape will be permitted on the home socks.

Please note the competitive cheer division listing has been revised and posted on the KHSAA website.  Adjustments were made based upon documented human error by Athletic/School administration in completing the survey or failure to initially respond.  Adjustments were not (and will not be) considered due to injuries or other changes in squad size.  Schools will compete in the division at both Region and State as listed.

Also, please note that Region 9 has voted and requested to the KHSAA that the Regional Competition be moved from Montgomery County to Conner High School.  This request has been approved with the competition date remaining Jan. 19.

12/06/12 Pole Vault Certification Required for Regular Season

    Track and Field Blog Updates

The Board of Control approved that the Pole Vault Certification for schools who participate in track, and have student athletes who compete in pole vaulting, be certified before the track season begins.

In the past this certification was mandatory only for post season competition.  The Board agreed that it is necessary for coaches to receive the proper certification before the season begins.

Pole Vault certification can be obtained through the  Pole Vault Certification Board in an online clinic.  This certification is good for 2 years and the cost is $35 per coach.  At least one coach must be certified for student athletes to be eligible to practice or compete.  Visit http://www.pvscb.com/ for more information.

    12/5/12 Track State Championship Dates

    Track and Field Blog Updates

The schedule for the state track meet for 2012-2013 school year is set as follows:

    Friday, May 17 – 2A and Saturday, May 18 – 1A and 3A

Please be sure to add this to your school calendar.  In years past we have found that schools appreciated the early announcement of these dates as spring is a busy time for all schools.  The release of these dates should be instrumental to schools as they finalize their school calendars throughout the year and after the winter months.

This format is a slight change from the past two years with two classes competing on  Saturday.  Exact times for each class will be released at a later date.  We can confirm that the Class 1A will be the early meet on Saturday and the Class 3A will be the afternoon meet.

The State Meet site will be announced when it is determined later in the fall.
