01/18/13 – Pleasure Ridge Park Granted At-Large Berth to Competitive Cheer Championships

2012-2013 News Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: JANUARY 18, 2013

During the KHSAA Region 6 Competitive Cheer competition on Jan. 12, a disqualification ruling was made in the Super-Large All-Girl division with regard to a National Federation rule. At the time the ruling was made, and based upon prior information from the NFHS, a stunt performed by Pleasure Ridge Park was ruled illegal by the technical judges as performed, due to safety concerns.

“As the commissioner and I reviewed this situation, it became clear that this was not a judgment call. That distinction is important because judgment calls cannot be appealed per bylaw 16. Our judges correctly observed and administered penalties based on what they saw during the routine,” said Assistant Commissioner and cheer contact Butch Cope. “However, we later found that this specific situation had been interpreted differently as the year moved on and we were not made aware of the change in interpretation until this week.”

After reviewing […]

01/17/13 – Score Clock Promotion

Wrestling Blog Updates

Coaches, I have attached a link to a letter that you can copy and present to wrestling supporters in your area, asking for possible advertisers for the score clocks that we use at the State tournament. In the past, several schools have sold advertisement spots to local business that support wrestling and some have even had their own booster clubs purchase adds in support of their wrestling team. I hope that those of you who have bought advertisement boards in the past will continue this year. Those coaches, who are new, may want to begin a new tradition by having your program prominently displayed in the arena. Please feel free to contact me by email, mbarren.@khsaa.org or phone 859-299-5472, if you have further questions. Thanks again for your support of our tournament. http://www.khsaa.org/wrestling/letterpromoscoreboardads.pdf

01/07/13 – Wrestling SKIN CONDITION

Wrestling Blog Updates

We have been contacted in the office that certain skin conditions have been identified at this weekends past tournaments held at  multiple sites. I would like to remind each of you to take the necessary steps to aid in the prevention of the spread of these conditions. Coaches please continue to monitor your students and if need be, refer them to a local medical professional. Coaches and officials, please take note that we updated the “Wrestling SKIN CONDITION” form ( WR111) two years ago. We believe it will benefit all parties involved by clearly stipulating weather the condition falls under Rule 4-2-3 (which requires a form to be renewed every Seven days) or Rule 4-2-5 (that allows for valid documentation for the duration of the season). Please take time to make your self familiar with this form. I have included a link to our website where you may download and make copies as needed. Always remember, regardless of documentation, NFHS rule 4-2-4 […]

12/14/12 – Wrestling Ear Guard Interpretation

Wrestling Blog Updates

As a rule reminder I have copied the latest correspondence from the NFHS in regards to Head gear. Key wording is “the uniform shall be worn as intended/designed by the manufacturer”. It has come to my attention that some wrestlers are “twisting the straps” for various reasons and that would not be allowed under this interpretation. Coaches, please be proactive  and stop this before the Official has too…

NFHS RULES REVIEW INTERPRETATION

TAPING OF WRESTLING EAR GUARDS

The NFHS Wrestling Rules Committee issued a rules reminder for 2011-12 on wrestling ear guards, specifically as it relates to Rules 4-1-4 and 4-1-5.  That rules reminder does not constitute a change in Rules 4-1-4 or 4-1-5; rather, it represents an emphasis in the manner the Committee believes the rules should be administered and enforced. Rule 4-1-4: ART. 4 . . . Wrestlers shall wear wrestling ear guards, which provide:
  • a.    adequate ear protection;
  • b.    […]

11/15/2012 – Information about Wrestling Realignment for 2013-2014

    Wrestling Blog Updates

With the growth of wrestling (more than 15 schools have added in last seven years), and four new programs are starting this year, it is time to realign Wrestling. Many of the regions are taking more than one day to compete and have little room for growth and expansion of new programs. In addition, with the NFHS rules restricting athletes to five bouts in a day (including forfeits), the size of the bracket makes it problematic when they become so large and mandate a second day.

The information about this realignment is at www.khsaa.org/wrestling. Click on the link to Realignment. Commentary and feedback will be accepted from the member schools by clicking this link, http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Wrestling_20132014_Alignment_Survey  through January 22, 2013 prior to planned approval of a final alignment by the Board of Control on January 28, 2013.

09/17/12 – Disqualifications Down in 2011-2012 School Year

    2012-2013 News Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: SEPTEMBER 17, 2012

DISQUALIFICATIONS DOWN IN 2011-2012 SCHOOL YEAR
More student-athletes and coaches were able to see the conclusion of their teams’ contests during the 2011-2012 school year.

A total of 481 student-athletes and coaches were disqualified from contests in the sports of baseball, basketball, football, soccer, softball, volleyball and wrestling last year, down from 545 during the 2010-2011 school year. The information was released during the KHSAA Board of Control Meeting on Monday in Lexington.

Before the 2011-2012 school year the KHSAA Board of Control approved measures stiffening the disqualification to two contests for student-athletes and three for coaches.

“I don’t think there’s any question the stiffer penalties had something to do with the fewer number of disqualifications we have seen,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “Especially in sports such as football, where three games can mean nearly a third of the season, more coaches and student-athletes […]

Kentucky’s elementary, middle and high schools have enjoyed archery competition for nearly a decade. Beginning with the 2012-2013 school year the chance to compete for a KHSAA state championship will become reality.

2013 BOYS’ SWEET 16® CHAMPIONSHIP GAME SET FOR SUNDAY

07/25/12 – Soccer Heat Timeout Procedure Adopted

    Soccer Blog Updates

The upcoming season will soon be upon us and with our recent weather patterns I would like to notify the member schools of our modification to the playing rules (Rule 7, 2012-13 NFHS Soccer Rules) with regard to duration of the game and length of periods if we find that we must take Heat timeouts. The rule calls for two equal halves of 40 minutes or four equal quarters of 20 minutes with a halftime interval of 10 minutes. The KHSAA has always used two equal halves of 40 minutes for our soccer contests. That will not change! The Standard Rule of Play will always be “two equal halves of 40 minutes”. But sometimes we also find ourselves having to meet the KHSAA Heat Index Policy in regard to mandated water breaks.  Beginning this season soccer matches that […]

07/24/12 – Championship Weekend Created for Fall Sports

    2012-2013 News Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: JULY 24, 2012

CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND CREATED FOR FALL SPORTS
Beginning in the fall of 2013 the first weekend of November will have a championship feel unlike any other in the Association’s 95-year history. The KHSAA Board of Control approved a measure at its July meeting to create a fall sports weekend of championships as five separate team championships will be decided on the same Saturday.
The final championship contests for volleyball, boys’ and girls’ cross country, as well as boys’ and girls’ soccer will be awarded on Nov. 9, 2013. The new series of championships will be held in week 18 of the NFHS corresponding date calendar.
The decision to create a fall weekend of champions received support for several reasons, among them the fact it cuts down on scheduling conflicts for member schools, unlike when the championships are conducted on three separate weekends. Similar events also have been […]

05/15/12 – Last Minute State Notes

    Tennis Blog Updates

The seed meeting went well and I want to thank those Regional representatives who traveled to Lexington yesterday to help “their kids” get a shot at a seed. Their work can be found on the State Tennis page http://www.khsaa.org/tennis/2012/index.html . I would like to point out some last minute items for you to keep in mind. First, we no longer require a coaches meeting on the Wednesday night before we begin. You will need to check in with either Butch Cope (at Shillito) or myself (at UK) to obtain your coaches credentials. You will sign in and be given your wrist band that will be recognized by the USTA official as being an authorized coach. It will also gain you free admission on both Friday and Saturday. Remember, you must WEAR THE ARMBAND AT ALL TIMES. Don’t worry; they are made of the same stuff (tyvek) that they wrap […]

    05/11/12 – Officials Advanced Camp 2012

    Soccer Blog Updates

Today’s Blog is geared towards our officials. Please take time to mark your calendars for this year’s Referee’s camp! The Advanced Camp for Soccer referees will again be held in conjunction with the Bluegrass State Games. We will be taking applications for this camp beginning today. Camp is scheduled for July 27 & 28 and will cost $65 (officials will be compensated for each match officiated by the BGSG).  As in the past, participants will be housed in a dorm on the UK campus at no cost.  Along with an in-house KHSAA rule’s clinic, the camp will feature classroom instruction and each referee will be assessed on each match officiated.    Just as a reminder, those of you who wish to be eligible for post season assignments are required to have attended  the advanced camp once every 4 years. If you haven’t participated in the camp since 2008, you […]

    05/09/12 – State Instructions

    Tennis Blog Updates

I know that you are busy making plans for your teams trip to the State Championships here in Lexington. I want to remind you to take a close look at the State Tournament Instructions that can be found on our Tennis page. In there you will find several things that must be done prior to the beginning of the Championships. One example of an action item for you to take care of prior to coming to Lexington is getting your Coaching credentials. I have cut and pasted that section for your attention:  Who Can Coach? In prior years a decision was made to allow enough coaches to be on site for each participant/team that is involved.  For instance, if a school has one girls’ participant in singles competing at Shillito and one girls’ doubles team participating at Shillito, we will allow two coaches passes  for that team.  If, for example, a school has two girls’ singles players participating and two doubles teams participating, […]

    05/01/12 – Assistant Coaches

    Tennis Blog Updates

Now that we are less than a week from the beginning of the post season, let me take this opportunity to remind you that any individual who wishes to “coach” in the post season must be recognized as a Coach by the School they are representing. It is easy for a tournament manager to look up who the Head coach is, they simply have to go to our website and look in the “coach/administrator listings” http://www.khsaa.org/publiccoaches.html   or the “Member School Directory” http://www.khsaa.org/directory/ What causes a problem is verification of the “assistant” coaches. We cannot waive the KHSAA Bylaw 27 requirement regarding the qualifications for high school coaches (i.e. Coaching Education Course requirement, Medical Symposium requirement, 64 College Credit Hours requirement, First Aid/CPR requirements, and others in Bylaw 27). If you are bringing “Assistant” coaches with you to […]

    04/24/12 – Post Season Instructions

    Tennis Blog Updates

Good morning, The sun is bright and it looks like another great day to play Tennis. I can’t believe we are getting ready for our post season tournaments. Many of you veterans know that the information for post season play ( regional and state) can be found on our web site:  http://www.khsaa.org/tennis/ . For those of you who are new to the coaching ranks, please make yourself familiar with our Tennis page and the different links to Tournament instructions and forms. You will also find helpful links to maps and the schedule of events for the State Championships. I’m excited to announce that the State Championships will have a new site for Thursday’s play. As you know on the first day of play, due to the large number of matches, we divide our tournament field by gender and have one group at UK, with the other group playing at an alternative site, then on Friday, we bring everyone to the UK complex. This year we will be using the City of Lexington’s […]

    04/24/12 – Rule 4 Information

    Soccer Blog Updates

I have been getting several inquires as to the “Uniform” changes for next year. First, there was a change to the rule change ( isn’t this fun) with regard to the date that it would take effect. Rule 4 reads …” with the 2013 fall season, the home team shall wear solid white jerseys and solid white socks…….. In last years rules clinic I had several slides ( with notes) covering the Uniform Rules. I would suggest that you download the slides from my PowerPoint, and keep them for your reference, when it comes time to order new kits.   http://www.khsaa.org/soccer/nfhssocceruniformshinguardrequirements.ppt.

04/17/12 – KHSAA Revised State Championship Format

    Soccer Blog Updates

The Board of Control voted yesterday to change the Post Season Tournament format. I’m very excited about this change. What will it mean to you? First, some of you will see new teams in your district and Regional tournaments (as a result of the previous re-alignment) after you have advanced through the region, the next step will be the “Semi-State” game that will be played at eight different sites. This is, in effect, our first round of the Sweet-Sixteen tournament for Soccer. Many of us believe that in the past, the State Championship tournament was unfairly thought of as just a four team tournament. I want each of the 16 Regional Champions to realize that regardless of the outcome of the next game that they play, their team has made it to the “State Championships”. The eight winners of the Semi-State game will advance to the quarter-finals here in Lexington. The match ups for this […]

    03/01/12 – Wrestling Notes

    Wrestling Blog Updates

Welcome!      We have just finished a great  season of wrestling with the championships in a brand new home! I’m already working on next years State Championships and with that comes a new method of communication between our office and the member schools. When our Boss first told us to create a Blog, I panicked. I’m not a writer. But here we go with my first post! When I was teaching, I had to explain to my students the Kentucky Department of Educations terms: Novice, Apprentice, Proficient and Distinguished. I told my students that they should think in terms of an imaginary trip and how to get from here to the Beach. A “Novice” writer would get you lost. An “Apprentice” writer will get you there, but it will take days and you will hate the trip. A “Proficient” writer will be like MapQuest, they will get you there in the shortest […]
