09/3/25 – Reminder: Fall 2025 Esports Registration Deadline is 9/19/25
Before we get into our fall seasonal reminders, we wanted to let everyone know that, during our summer review meeting with PlayVS, we found out that Kentucky ranked third in the nation last year, behind Georgia and New Mexico, in terms of State Esports Participation!
In addition, Fayette County Public Schools was voted PlayVS’ School District of the Year for the 2024-2025 school year!
As far as reminders, the most pressing is our Registration Deadline
The deadline to register (and therefore, participate) in the Fall ’25 KHSAA/PlayVS Esports Season is Friday, September 19 @ 11:59 PM League Time.
Please get your teams registered and onboarded as soon as possible so we can make certain that we have enough participation in each of our seven titles to keep them in the KHSAA State Championship League – including our new Fall ’25 3v3 Title, Street Fighter 6.
New schools – you still have plenty of time! […]

08/27/25 – LSC stadium to host KHSAA Soccer State Finals
The KHSAA will hold its 2025 boys’ and girls’ soccer finals at the Lexington Sporting Club’s (LSC) recently completed stadium at 200 Shives Drive, Lexington, KY 40509 in Lexington on Nov. 1. Working with Mayor Linda Gorton, the Urban County Council and the Lexington-Fayette County government, along with VisitLex and Bryan Brooks and the staff at the LSC, the Association has been negotiating to hold its championships at that location for more than a year.
“We try, where possible, feasible and affordable, to place our final events in our state’s prime facilities. That is especially difficult in the fall when almost all of our colleges and universities are using their facilities nearly full-time for events and activities by their own students, especially with soccer and volleyball, and with the tremendous limitations on needed space, such as parking, while school is in session,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “We are fortunate to […]

08/21/25 – Volleyball Season Updates and Reminders
Now that the first week of the 2025 girls’ volleyball season is coming to an end, we wanted to provide these updates based on early questions that have come to the office, as well as a clarification from the NFHS. These reminders will also apply to the boys’ 2026 season.
BALL SHAGGING BY OPPONENTS
This was a Point of Emphasis last year from the NFHS that dealt with sportsmanship. Opposing teams were asked not to shag balls during warm-ups. After a year review and consultation from the NFHS, our office has been advised that this practice is recommended should there be sportsmanship issues.
We had and still have, during the first week of the 2025 season, regions where it had been adhered to and where it was ignored. From here forward, it will be a local issue. Should it be deemed a sportsmanship issue, then it should be recognized; otherwise, the Association has no […]
08/21/25 – State Golf First Round Site Change (Regions 1-4)
After consultation and review with Golf House Kentucky, we feel the need to relocate the State First Round Tournament for Regions 1-4 to Calvert City Country Club for 2025.
We realize some teams may have already made efforts to play at Drake Creek Golf Club this season, but we believe this decision will result in the best experience for all participants. Hopefully, making this announcement now allows teams time to make logistical adjustments as they prepare for the state tournament. We appreciate Drake Creek’s understanding and willingness to be a part of the KHSAA State Championship, and hope to include them in the near future as the site rotation plan is expanded for future years.
Calvert City previously hosted the first round state event in 2023, and we are confident Adam Webb and his staff will do another great job with this year’s tournament, even on short notice.

NFHS Learning Center Continues to ‘Protect the Purpose’ of High School Sports, Activities
Dr. Karissa L. Niehoff, NFHS Chief Executive Officer

Today, the NFHS is launching its Protect the Purpose campaign. The goal is to help high school students learn valuable lessons through participation in high school athletics and activities that prepare them for successful lives and careers. This special emphasis will help state associations, coaches, administrators and others to keep sports competitively balanced, minimize the risk of injury for students and keep programs focused on education.

07/18/25 – NFHS Announces Girls’ Lacrosse Playing Rule Changes
Five Rules Changes Approved For 2026 High School Girls’ Lacrosse Season
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
INDIANAPOLIS – Improving game flow and pace of play are the primary focuses of the 2026 high school girls’ lacrosse rules changes.
Five rules changes were recommended by the NFHS Girls’ Lacrosse Rules Committee during its annual meeting last June at The Alexander in Indianapolis. All proposals were later approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.
A change to Rule 5-2 Penalty 1 (Starting Play – Draw) allows any player to take the free position when one player draws illegally. Also, for Rule 7-3 Penalties 1a and 3a (Deputy Rules), the offending player shall be placed 4 meters away (instead of behind) from the player taking the free position for a goal circle foul.
Rule 4-3-3d, e, aligns the restart procedure after a possession time-out when the goalkeeper has possession of the ball […]

Addition of Javelin Specifications Highlight High School Track & Field Rules Revisions
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
INDIANAPOLIS – With 21 state associations now incorporating the javelin into outdoor track & field competition, the NFHS Track & Field Rules Committee voted to move the implement construction specifications into the Track & Field Rules Book, effective with the 2026 season.
The addition of javelin specifications was one of 11 changes recommended by the committee at its June meeting in Indianapolis, all of which were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.
“Moving the implement construction specifications for the javelin into the rules book provides greater clarity, consistency and accessibility for high school coaches, athletes and meet officials,” said Julie Cochran, NFHS director of sports and liaison to the Track & Field Rules Committee. “By incorporating the construction requirements directly into the NFHS Track & Field Rules Book, we ensure that all […]
07/16/25 – NFHS Announces Softball Playing Rule Changes
Electronic Communication by Players Clarified in High School Softball
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
INDIANAPOLIS – No player shall be allowed to transmit or record audio or video from the playing surface in high school softball. This new language in Rule 1-8-6 of the NFHS Softball Rules Book further clarifies the use of electronic devices and what is permitted in the sport after language was added last year to allow for electronic communication for coaching purposes.
This change was the highlight of the NFHS Softball Rules Committee’s rules recommendations as a result of the committee’s annual rules meeting held last June at The Alexander hotel in Indianapolis. The NFHS Board of Directors subsequently approved the rules changes to take effect next year.
“While increased media exposure has positively influenced the growth and visibility of softball, the committee determined that the potential risks associated with players transmitting or recording audio or video through devices […]

07/15/25 – NFHS Announces Boys’ Lacrosse Playing Rule Changes
12 Rules Changes Approved Ahead of 2026 High School Boys’ Lacrosse Season
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
INDIANAPOLIS – Among the changes for the 2026 high school boys’ lacrosse season, no defensive player other than a properly equipped goalkeeper can enter the team’s own crease with the perceived intent of blocking a shot or acting as a goalkeeper, or a personal foul for illegal equipment will be called as a non-releasable foul.
This topic highlighted 12 rules changes recommended by the NFHS Boys Lacrosse Rules Committee during its annual meeting last June at The Alexander in Indianapolis. All proposed changes were subsequently accepted by the NFHS Board of Directors.
The changes to Rules 4-18-4 PENALTY, 5-6-2 (NEW), 5-10 and 6-6-4 minimize risk of injury by discouraging players who are not properly equipped from acting as a goalkeeper by making the penalty more severe.
Relatedly, goalkeepers will no longer be given a maximum of five seconds […]

New language was added to Rule 1-2-9, noting that the double first base must be white and a contrasting solid color. The white portion of the base is located in fair territory, while the colored half is located in foul territory, split by the first base foul line. There is to be no space between the two portions of the double base.
