09/21/15 – Reminder of Bylaw 15 – Practice of Sportsmanship – Removal of Team
It is the clear obligation of principals, coaches, and all official representatives of member schools to practice the highest principles of sportsmanship and the ethics of competition in all interscholastic relationships with fans, officials, players, coaches, official representatives of member schools, and the general public.

One aspect of this Bylaw that has recently become a concern involves coaches who have removed their team from the floor or field prior to completion of the contest and without the permission of officials.
Please make sure you are aware of Case BL-15-11 :
Removal of a team from the floor or field without the permission of the official(s) is a violation of Bylaw 15, Practice of Sportsmanship. A school or school representative violating this rule may be suspended or otherwise penalized. If the game is called because of […]

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 2, 2015
The KHSAA has handed down sanctions to Bell County and Taylor County High Schools for violations of Bylaw 23 (Limitation of Seasons) resulting from attendance at a preseason football camp the weekend of August 7.
During the course of its investigation, the KHSAA found that both Bell County and Taylor County committed the following violations:

(2) Failed to provide the requisite rest following full gear practice;
(3) Exceeded the time limits for contact contained in the Bylaw;
(4) Exceeded the daily practice time allowable.
Subsequent to that weekend, Bell County, despite a reminder notice from the KHSAA concerning scrimmage limits, played an additional scrimmage the weekend of August 14. This constituted an additional violation due to the fact that Bell County had a contest scheduled the weekend of […]

08/27/15 – Triennial Survey Results Highlight Dance For Potential Future KHSAA Sponsorship
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 27, 2015
During Monday’s Board of Control meeting at the Owensboro Convention Center, KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett presented the results from the Association’s triennial survey of the membership, conducted earlier this summer, the results of which designated Dance as the one sport or sport-activity to receive enough interest to be considered for future adoption.
The Board directed staff to return at the November meeting with a report on the necessary steps for implementing a championship in Dance in the future, including a complete fiscal analysis of the impact to the KHSAA and all member schools and its impact on other programs, along with an update on the addition of Rifle Marksmanship, which was previously approved by the Board.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 26, 2015
The KHSAA Board of Control conducted its first meeting of the 2015-16 school year on Monday at the Owensboro Convention Center. Among the many agenda items discussed, the Board executed a lengthy review of its current classification and alignment system for postseason play, and the ramifications of possible expansion of classification to other team sports. This review was requested by the Board after receiving a proposal concerning the classification of baseball and the format of all rounds of the postseason baseball tournament from Lawrence County High School during the 2014-15 school year. Following the receipt of the requested changes from Lawrence County, the Board requested information for a broader review of the issues in classification in the other team sports, not simply a review of baseball.
During the discussion and review, six major points were concluded when reviewing the situations from other states when compared to the current setup of championships: […]
08/25/15 – Initial Football, Soccer Statistical Leader Reports Available
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 25, 2015The weekly statistical leader reports for football and boys’ and girls’ soccer have been updated at KHSAA.org. Statistics are compiled weekly throughout the regular season and will be posted to the KHSAA website every Tuesday.
As a reminder, member schools are solely responsible for submitting statistical information. If a school or individual is omitted, or information is not updated, that means the team in question did not update its statistics through the KHSAA’s online system prior to the deadline.
Beginning last season, as contained in Bylaw 27, the requirements to enter and maintain rosters, schedules and statistics was enforced more rigorously by the KHSAA. This enforcement subjects member schools to penalties by the Commissioner, including fines and other actions, within the constraints of Bylaw 27.

Please review the KMA/KHSAA Heat Index Chart for determining Reduction in Activity located at: http://khsaa.org/sportsmedicine/heat/heatindexchartcolor.pdf. These guidelines shall be adhered to with no exceptions.
Specifically, in games where the heat index has been determined to be 95 or higher, play will stop at the next natural stoppage after the 20 minute mark of each half of play to allow student-athletes and officials to take a mandatory 10-minute heat water break. The restart will remain the same as it normally would have occurred. Contest officials will get heat index information from game management before the start of the contest and will then implement the timeout procedures by notifying the coaches at the required pre-game meeting. - A one-pound growth allowance for each weight class will be granted for the first day of the tournament, March 10.
- An additional pound will be granted to each class for those wrestlers remaining in the tournament on March 11.
- Per NFHS rules, no other allowances will be granted.

11/21/2014-Required Wrestling Mat Area
As a part of the Wrestling rules clinic each year, the NFHS lists certain rules that have not changed but should be reviewed and made a “Point of Emphasis” (POE). One such POE this year has resulted in some dialogue among our member school representatives regarding the requirements for our member schools.
Required Safety Mat Area Surrounding Wrestling Mats During Competition (NFHS Rule 2-1-2) states, “The wrestling area of the mat shall be a circular area a minimum of 28 feet in diameter. Surrounding and secured to the wrestling area of the mat shall be a safety mat area of approximately 5 feet wide.”
This means there shall be approximately 5 feet of safety mat area from the out of bounds circle to the nearest obstacle of any kind, i.e., gym floor, tables, chairs, clocks, etc.
The wording “approximately 5 feet” is used because as mats age they may shrink, which could minimally […]

09/03/14 – First Football, Soccer Statistical Leader Reports Released
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 3, 2014
The initial weekly statistical leader reports for football and boys’ and girls’ soccer have been posted to KHSAA.org. Statistics are compiled weekly throughout the regular season and will be posted to the KHSAA website every Tuesday (Soccer) and Wednesday (Football).
As a reminder, member schools are solely responsible for submitting statistical information. If a school or individual is omitted, or information is not updated, that means the KHSAA did not receive a report prior to the deadline. Beginning with 2014-2015, as contained in Bylaw 27, the requirements to enter and maintain rosters, schedules and statistics will be enforced more rigorously by the KHSAA. This enforcement will subject the member schools to penalties by the Commissioner, including fines and other actions, within the constraints of Bylaw 27.
The statistical leader reports can be found through the links below:

08/21/14 – Heat Index Reminder for Soccer
With Temperatures reaching into the nineties for many areas across the Commonwealth this week, I would like to remind all of you of our Heat Index guidelines for Soccer:
Please review the KMA/KHSAA Heat Index Chart and the levels of reduction in activity as warranted. You must adhere to these restrictions. (http://khsaa.org/sportsmedicine/heat/heatindexchartcolor.pdf )
In games where the heat index has been determined to be 95 or higher, play will stop at the 20-minute mark of each half of play to allow student-athletes and of?cials to take a mandatory 10-minute heat timeout and water break. Contest of?cials will get heat index information from game management before the start of the contest and will then implement the timeout procedures by notifying the coaches at the required pre-game meeting.

08/21/14 – Scoreboard/Rosters/Statistics Reminder
With the 2014-15 school year underway, not to mention a large number of administrators and coaches holding new positions across the state, now is a good time to pass along a few reminders for the fall sports season in regards to schedules, statistics and rosters.
SCOREBOARD/ROSTER/SCHEDULE REMINDER
The KHSAA/Riherds.com Scoreboard is provided as a service to schools, student-athletes, media members and the general public. The most frequent complaint we hear from the media, general public and our own membership is that the scoreboard contains inaccurate schedules and rosters, as this is often the tool the media uses to cover your programs and this information provides tremendous promotional benefit to your students and school community. It is the responsibility of each school to keep their schedules and rosters current and accurate throughout the year as has previously been detailed by the Commissioner.
At your earliest convenience, […]

08/06/14 – Commissioner’s Response to Home School Proposal
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 6, 2014
Commissioner’s Response to Home School Proposal
“Following the announcement of the bill introduced by Representative Stan Lee (R-Lexington) on Tuesday, our office has received a number of phone calls and emails from media members seeking comment. While this bill was originally reported as a measure to allow home schooled children to play athletics at the middle and high school level, the actual details are much more impactful to education-based athletics and its impact much more pervasive on our member schools. As it is currently drafted, the bill would fundamentally alter high school athletics in the state, as it would allow all nonpublic school student-athletes to attend a nonpublic school and yet compete for public schools at their discretion, if the school in which they are attending (including home school) didn’t offer a specific extracurricular activity.
This proposed act is particularly different […]
08/04/14 – Archery Changes on the Horizon
As the school year begins, and for planning purposes we would like you to be aware of some important changes for the postseason in Archery. Due to some potential misinformation that is being circulated, we felt it better to communicate this information when it becomes available instead of waiting until the season actually begins later in the year.
The KHSAA archery tournament dates and basic management are being adjusted, particularly with respect to scheduling. The KHSAA, along with our partners at KY Fish and Wildlife and the NASP are trying to move our tournaments to a time with less conflict with other sports and sport-activities and to make the events truly KHSAA events. In the end, these moves will create even more shooting opportunities for our high school archers while changing/eliminating the cost element to many of the participants. KHSAA, KY Fish and Wildlife and NASP are working together to make sure that all of these […]

Board of Control Recommends Use of Protective Head Gear in Softball; Makes Football Alignment Adjustment
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 15, 2014
The Board of Control conducted its first meeting of the 2014-15 academic year at the Bank of Kentucky Center in Northern Kentucky on Monday morning. With a growing concern to player safety in fastpitch softball, the Board addressed the issue of face/head protection. NFHS Rule 1-8-4 states that defensive players are permitted to wear face/head protection in the field. The Board of Control, based on a proposal from staff, a review of available injury data from the NFHS RIO […]

All coaches are expected to take the time to read these items carefully, even veteran coaches, as changes have been made this year. Those of you who will serve as Regional Managers will find your instructions have also been posted to the Tennis page.
I would strongly suggest that all competing schools download the files to ensure that you are aware of all KHSAA rules regarding these tournaments.
