02/21/14 – Update on Billy Hicks’ All-Time Coaching Record

Obsolete

Over the past few weeks, the KHSAA has worked to resolve questions surrounding the all-time coaching record for Billy Hicks. With the assistance of several news outlets, including the Lexington Herald-Leader, the Louisville Courier-Journal, the Harlan Daily Enterprise and the Georgetown News-Graphic, the KHSAA believes it has resolved many of the discrepancies in regards to coach Hicks’ record.

With that said, the KHSAA records will reflect that coach Hicks enters tonight’s game between Scott County and Paul Laurence Dunbar with an all-time record of 856-244, tying him with William Kean (Central HS) atop the state’s all-time list for coaching victories.

The KHSAA congratulates coach Hicks on his accomplishments thus far, and wishes him the best of luck in the future.

01/31/14- Alignment Proposal

Tennis Blog Updates

At its January meeting, the Board of Control approved a draft realignment of teams in Tennis to be in effect for 2014-2015. This is part of the Board’s continuing efforts on the part of the membership to place schools in the same region as they are placed in basketball provided the numbers of schools allow for this placement. This decision will allow Tennis to be more consistent with other KHSAA sports (Baseball, Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, and Softball) that have been realigned recently to the same regional format. Commentary and feedback will be accepted from the member schools by way of a survey that will be sent to the Principal of each member school. Following feedback from the schools, final adoption will be considered at the Board’s April meeting for implementation in 2014-15.

01/31/14 – Commissioner’s Comments on Injunctive Release Issued Friday In Franklin County

2013-2014 News Releases

“We have received the restraining order issued by the Franklin Circuit Court, and will adhere to its requirements. That said, it is likely not possible for me to disagree more with the findings of the court in its order. While it is inappropriate for this office to discuss the specific circumstances related to the matters of these students due to privacy concerns, we look forward to further judicial review and consideration about this matter. Clearly, situations such as this were intended to be regulated and restricted when the member schools passed the rules governing eligibility, and when those rules were approved by the Kentucky Board of Education and the Kentucky General Assembly. We will vigorously move forward with efforts related to these cases.”

However, after our initial review and conversation with representatives of Sayre, we are confident that the administration of both schools and school systems are aggressively reviewing the incident and until we have final reports of their actions, will allow the process to continue at the local school level.”

All requests must be made prior to the set deadline before district boundaries are established. Please take time to make your self familiar with this form. It can be found on the Wrestling page  as  both a PDF or word doc. 08/23/13 – Soccer Sportsmanship

Soccer Blog Updates

The practice of good sportsmanship is integral to conducting an interscholastic athletic contest. After reviewing the Disqualification reports from the first three days of the season, we have 25 student/athletes or Coaches that have been removed from their games. Granted, a few of these are due to second cautions of reckless play, but far too many of these are for dissent, vulgar/profane language or fighting. After discussing this with the Commissioner, I want to remind you that this type of behavior will not be tolerated. The Board of Control has empowered the Commissioner to add additional fines to the school for repeated offences that show a lack of institutional control. I am fairly confident that those coaches who don’t have these issues arise in their programs are as tired as I am with listening to people say “that’s Soccer”. It is a great game and it doesn’t have to be played in an unsporting manner. […]

07/29/13 – Rule 4-1-1c Socks and Things Applied

The season is officially under way with two more weeks of practice before contests can begin! We just completed the Officials Advanced camp in conjunction with the Bluegrass State Games. What a great weekend for Soccer, a touch of rain for the first game Saturday gave way to a beautiful weekend. I saw a lot of good play for this time of preseason and the Referees were on top of their game too. One issue that came up  was players adding tape to their socks. As you will read in the rule book and hear me cover in the rules clinic, it must be of SIMILAR color to the sock to which it is applied. A few coaches tried to explain that they felt it was not “tape” and/or was made by “Nike” so the rule did not apply. The KHSAA interpretation of this rule as well as the NFHS is that regardless of the […]

04/16/13 – Regional Tournament Sites

Soccer Blog Updates

Now that we have had a year to settle into our new Soccer Alignment , we are going to make a slight change that will benefit all of us. Most of us have found the process for determining the regional site somewhat cumbersome and confusing to say the least. As we do with other teams sports ( Baseball, Basketball etc.) The Commissioner shall determine region tournament sites. Schools interested in hosting a region tournament shall submit their request through the defined site selection process . Normally we ask the teams to declare a site plan for future tournaments at the meeting prior to the regional tournament each year. Due to the fact that we must all plan well in advance of this years tournament  we are asking you to meet as a collection of regional Coaches and/or Athletic Directors and select a site for this years Regional Tournament. Please forward your requests as a region to this office. But remember , the […]

04/15/13 – Board of Control Approves Moving KHSAA Sweet 16® Finals To Sunday

2012-2013 News Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 15, 2013

After reviewing the 2013 KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16®, the Board of Control voted today in favor of a proposal to move the championship games of the boys’ and girls’ Sweet 16® to Sunday starting in 2014. The format change allows for the semifinals to be conducted as a standalone event on Saturday, and gives the participants more time to prepare and recuperate leading up to the championship game.

“We examined the format of our basketball tournaments from a number of different perspectives, and in the end, felt like it was time to move the championship game to Sunday. Separating the championship game from the semifinals, really makes an event out of the Saturday games for those final four teams,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “We think the added rest leading up to the championship game will not only benefit the health and safety of the students, it […]

04/08/13 – Team Camps & Scrimmages

Soccer Blog Updates

Coaches as you make your summer plans, keep in mind the Bylaws and how they may impact those plans. I received a copy of an email that has made its way around to the Soccer Coaches in Kentucky, it is from one of our state colleges advertising their “Team camp”. If you take your team to a team camp that overlaps the beginning of the season ( July 15th) you could run a danger of exceeding your two (2) scrimmage limit before the first session of the camp ends on the first day. Some of these camps will have your players involved with other schools in small sided games ( i.e. 3v3) and/or full sided scrimmages. Both of these activities count towards that limit. Remember Bylaw 25 Limitation of Seasons states: Sec. 7) Sports Specific Limitations- Soccer- Boys and Girls…. b) There shall be no more than two (2) scrimmages or practice games prior to the first regular season contest of that year. The only exception to […]

In less than 24 hours, I have been asked by four different coaches whether girls on their varsity teams can play JV Boys soccer too. It seems some club coaches have been telling the girls that their best chance for improvement is to play against the boys. Regardless of the motivation to play on both teams, the Board of Control has set policy for this issue, copied below is that policy for Soccer. You may find this in the Handbook, look under Board Policy E) Soccer 1) If a school sponsors both a boys and girls team in soccer,  students may only play for the gender speci? c team (girls may  only play for the girls’ team, boys may only play for the boys’  team. 2) If a school sponsors only a boys team and does not sponsor a  girls team, female students may […]

Today Coaches, I want to send this reminder of how important the 5th place finisher in regions can become. Should a school have an athlete finish 1-4 in the region and he/she is unable to compete in the state tournament due to schedule conflicts, injury or other documented reason; the remainder of the bracket will be “rolledup”, and the replacement wrestler seeded fourth. If a bracket position is vacated and unable to be filled by an alternate from the region, the option will roll in random order to another region. Coaches are advised to weigh-in any fifth place regional wrestler in case of replacement the day of the State Tournament. If any of you have a wrestler pull out, please contact this office ASAP so that we may call the next school inline, so that their 5th place finisher may enter the tournament.

In this tie break protocol, the first player or doubles team to 10 points, and ahead by 2, wins the match. It is scored as 1-0 with the score in parenthesis, for example 6-4,4-6,1-0 (10-7).
