FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 31, 2018

The first statistical leader reports of the season for football, boys’ and girls’ soccer, and field hockey have been posted at KHSAA.org. 05/09/18 – Board of Control Addresses Football Alignment, Scheduling Grid, Cross Bracketing

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 9, 2018

The Board of Control conducted its final meeting of the 2017-18 academic year on May 8-9 at the KHSAA offices, addressing several issues related to football along with the postseason for multiple sport-activities.

Following initial review in February, KHSAA staff presented the draft football alignment (2019-22) to the membership for comment. After a lengthy review of feedback and consideration of each change proposed by the membership, the Board approved a final four-year alignment to begin in 2019. The new football alignment can be viewed at: https://khsaa.org/final-approved-alignment-football-2019-through-2022-playing-seasons/

With recent change allowing football playing member schools to have two scrimmages regardless of playing season, staff recommended to eliminate the “week 0” terminology from the scheduling grid, as it no longer has an impact on a team’s regular season or scrimmage schedule. The mandatory scheduling grid is listed at: https://khsaa.org/football/schedulinggridfor2019through2022.pdf

The Board approved the removal of “week 0” from the […]

“We have been discussing the future and the format of the state softball tournament for the last several years, and I applaud the Board for the steps it took today in approving our recommendations,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “Examining the state softball and baseball tournaments, you would be hard pressed to say the […]

11/16/17- 2017 Wrestling Rules Clarifications Including Experimental Weigh-in

    Wrestling Blog Updates

To further our efforts in communications across the wrestling community, we have developed this post as a list of questions that have come to the staff from both Coaches and Officials concerning this year’s playing rules. As new questions arise, we will update this post for everyone’s clarification.

As an experimental rule, the Association wanted to address the possible problem of weigh-ins for female wrestlers when the Officials’ assigned to the match along with the Coaching staffs and event management are all male. To help give some relief to this situation, we are experimenting with an alternative weigh-in procedure. This is not intended as a rule change for all weigh-ins, but a means to accommodate those special situations that might arise that make the standard procedure difficult from a management perspective.

The following are questions that have been submitted, along with our interpretation of the Experimental Weigh-in Rule for Females when no females in tournament […]

    11/09/17- Bylaw 9 Rulings

    2017-2018 News Releases

Recently, the ruling officer for Bylaw 9 handed down sanctions to student-athletes from Lafayette, Frederick Douglass, Scott County, Montgomery County and South Laurel after school administrators proactively self-reported violations to the Association. The violations centered around an organized basketball contest involving students in member schools after the start of school but prior to the first day of allowable practice.

The KHSAA enforces the rules its membership approves, and though the event in question resulted in a minimal penalty (a one-game suspension) for the participating student-athletes, the Bylaw 9 violation is hardly unique to this specific event. Several other events in various parts of the state resulted in similar sanctions as required by the rule. Despite the constant education efforts of Association staff, this situation could have easily been avoided had adjustments been made to the event’s format, setup and participant composition. The rule is well known to the athletes, member school coaches, member school athletic […]

    05/03/17 – Regional Tennis Sportmanship

    Tennis Blog Updates

As regional play approaches, we would like to remind all schools of behavioral expectations to further emphasize sportsmanship in our Tennis program. High school tennis is an extension of the classroom, and as such, all involved should conduct themselves in a manner that reflects teamwork, respect, responsibility and perspective. That includes coaches, student-athletes and spectators.

Officials expect good behavior and will quickly penalize misconduct. To achieve this goal, all involved should:

    • Avoid unnecessary noise during play. This includes cell phones, pagers, etc.
    • Stay well away from the fence surrounding the courts so as not to distract any players or hinder any coaches.
    • Do not talk to players from the time they take the court to warm up until the match is over. This includes timeouts and set breaks.
    • Coaches, be sure to allow the Officials or opposing coaches to correct the […]
