04/28/14 – Clarification on Last Date for Track Meets Counting Toward Postseason Requirement

Track and Field Blog Updates

This blog has been updated as of 4/28/14 at 4:07pm – The correction is highlighted below.

Allowing two weeks to host the regional track meets has exposed a piece in the regional instructions that needs to be clarified for this season and future years.

A meet shall count toward the 4 meet requirement as long as it occurs on the last day before the regional and results are posted to the milesplit.com website.    Competition rules do allow for meets to be held and count toward the 4 meet minimum requirement after the entry deadline, but those times or marks will not count for seeding purposes.

For example:  If your school’s regional meet is to take place on Saturday, May 10th, the last day to count a meet toward the requirement of four meets for regional competition is Friday, May 9th, but any meets held after Tuesday, May 6th cannot be […]

03-27-14 Cold Weather Statement for Baseball, Softball and Track

Athletic Department Blog Updates

Due to the ongoing cold temperatures, we have received several inquiries regarding postponing/canceling contests due to cold weather.

Prior to the officials assuming authority (jurisdiction) per the playing rules, it is the decision of home game management to determine whether or not a contest should be canceled or postponed due to cold temperatures. This decision should be made in consultation with all involved schools, but is ultimately the decision of the home team administration.

After a contest has started, or the officials have otherwise assumed authority per the playing rules, contest officials after consulting with coaches and home game management, shall determine whether play should be postponed or canceled.

There are rules contained in the Board of Control adopted policies in Section 32 (on page 34), relative to the payment of umpires/officials should the contest be postponed http://khsaa.org/handbook/20132014/policies.pdf.

Please feel free to contact our office if you have any additional questions. […]

On behalf of the Track and Field Rules Committee, the following situations are being provided for your information should you encounter the same or similar questions. These situations are also posted in My Groups under Track Field, Documents.

SITUATION: Competitor A reports to the clerk of the course wearing Superman socks that have a cape attached to each sock flowing behind the athlete. The clerk, after consulting the meet referee, directs competitor A to either remove the socks or securely affix the capes to the socks so as not to come loose during competition; otherwise, he/she will not be permitted to participate. RULING: Correct procedure. COMMENT: Although socks are not a part of the uniform and, therefore, are not required to meet uniform restrictions, the cape extending from the socks becomes a risk minimization issue, as the […]

11/21/13 – Changes to Track Site Selection Plan

Athletic Department Blog Updates

After fantastic feedback on the Cross Country Super Regionals and a great crowd and weather at the state Cross Country meet, we feel it is time to catch everyone up on what has been going on behind the scenes in regards to track regional sites.

Schools received a notice from the Commissioner after the last Board of Control meeting explaining possible regional dates and a waiver for possible competition after a regional (in case you missed it choose this link http://khsaa.org/111313-revision-in-track-and-field-season-2014-only/).  Additionally the Commissioner and I have spoken with many of you with regard to hosting multiple track regions at a like single site.  We recognize that not all of the pieces of the puzzle were fitting as nicely as they did for Cross Country and took a second look at host sites.

As you know, the KHSAA Commissioner is ultimately responsible for choosing all sports postseason sites, but we ask our […]

11/13/13- Revision in Track and Field Season, 2014 ONLY

Athletic Department Blog Updates

At the November 11, 2013 meeting, the KHSAA Board of Control approved an allowance for Track and Field teams for the 2014 season only, to allow normal “regular season” meets to be run AFTER the regional meets, provided these regular season meets are held on or prior to May 17 and provided no school competes in more than 19 meets (not including the region and state). This allowance is further explained below, and is a situation specific to 2014 due to the likely involvement of more than fifty percent of the licensed Track and Field officials as the University of Kentucky hosts the SEC Outdoor championships on May 15-17, 2014.

In July, 2013 the Board approved a staff request to adjust the date of the 2014 regional and state track meets. This was done due to major scheduling conflicts with one weekend in May (originally reported as May 8-10, later confirmed as May 15-17), and also […]

09/21/13 – Where to send XC and Track Results

All results are mandatory to be submitted to Jonathan Grooms via email at jonathan@kytrackxc.com or kytrackxc@gmail.com in flat html format from Hytek.  If not in Hytek, an Excel Spreadsheet would be the preferred method.  Only those results submitted will be considered for eligibility for the postseason by the KHSAA.  Please get results to Jonathan in a timely manner (within a few days of your event) and in the format that he has requested above.

The website has many other free features.  Coaches can claim their team and athletes. This feature will allow coaches to easily track their athletes progress throughout the season(s).  Again, there is no charge for this portion of the […]

08/28/13 – XC and TR Regional Host Form, Changes, and Information

Athletic Department Blog Updates

With the new alignment in Track and Cross Country came the opportunity to make adjustments to our postseason (regional) competitions. Managing 21 sites (3 classes and 7 regions) continued to have complications, including but not limited to, collection of identified host sites and the accuracy of those site plans, quality courses, facilities and equipment, supplying official to all sites, inspections of all courses and tracks, and year to year host schools cancellations and coaching (meet management) changes. Though not all of these issues plagued all regions, some of these issues caused problems in most regions.    In an earlier post, we displayed a two year plan (draft). We were mostly concerned with this coming year. The 2013-2014 cross country sites only require one change at this time. This change will be made and posted as soon as confirmed. We ask that any other school that may be unable to host this season contact […]

08/05/13 XC and Track Regional Sites Selected

Athletic Department Blog Updates

With the new track and field alignment comes additional changes.  As schools know all postseason sites are set by the KHSAA for all sports.  The new alignment gave the KHSAA an opportunity to coordinate the post season assignments differently than in the past for both Cross Country and Track and Field.

A concern for all schools has been the facilities and courses.  Those concerns range from equipment such as pole vault and discuss venues, to timing equipment and appropriate amount of parking.  Another important aspect of hosting is the experience of meet management and the ability to provide an adequate number of workers and volunteers to make a meet successful.  Providing the top officials to ensure the absolute best experience possible for the student athletes in our communities is also a goal.

To address these issues, the KHSAA has designated the host schools for both Cross Country and Track and Field for the next two […]

New Track/XC Alignment Approved; Football Draft Alignments To Begin; Commissioner Receives Extremely Favorable Evaluation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: JULY 23, 2013

The Board of Control conducted its July meeting on Monday at the Bank of Kentucky Center on the campus of Northern Kentucky University. Among the various topics addressed was the finalizing of a new alignment for Track and Field/Cross Country for the upcoming 2013-14 season.

Following months of review, a survey of the member schools, and consideration of all of the suggested amendments, the Board of Control adopted a revised alignment for Track & Field/Cross Country to take effect for postseason competition in the fall of 2013. Originally, a draft alignment was developed which would have minimized differences in enrollment between the largest and smallest schools in Class 1A and Class 3A. However, the feedback from the membership was more favorable to the current system […]

APPROVED ALIGNMENT OF TEAMS, 2013-2014 CROSS COUNTRY AND TRACK

The Board of Control conducted its July meeting on Monday at the Bank of Kentucky Center on the campus of Northern Kentucky University.

However, the feedback from the membership was more favorable to the current system of dividing the schools, as the draft would have resulted in extremely large regions in Class 2A or additional regions.

Following consideration, the Board left the dividing line between Class 1A and 2A at 610 students (as with the old alignment), and raised the line […]

07/11/13 Track Season Date Changes Pending

Athletic Department Blog Updates

Over the past months, staff has spent quite a bit of time reviewing future plans in Track and Field. We were very concerned about the fact that due to natural calendar rollover situations, the track season was going to be shortened in 2014 and 2015. This, coming on the heels of the movement of the region and state competitions a couple of years ago due to testing, forced us to examine the entire season and its parameters.

Regardless of state venue, which has not yet been set, the staff at the KHSAA has identified several issues regarding both the original dates and potential alternative dates for the track and field postseason.

  • The University of Kentucky is hosting an SEC meet the weekend currently set for the high school regional weekend.  Because so many of our officials are collegiate caliber and beyond officials, this conflict would prohibit the KHSAA from providing the highest quality […]

With the University of Louisville hosting regional softball again there have been some changes to bus parking that I was not aware of yesterday.  Buses should now park across the street from the Papa Johns Cardnial Stadium in the S lot.  This will actually be a shorter walk to the bus shuttle for the drivers.

Also a reminder to teams (and coaches if you would remind your fans) that coolers are allowed only in the team tent city area on the field hockey field.  Coolers will not be allowed in the stadium stands, nor in the grassy area near the jump pits.

Coaches have asked about the distances for jump boards in the triple jump event.  In all three classes, jumpers will have the option of distances.  They may use 24, 28, 32, or 36.  Please utilize this information as you continue to practice this week in preparations for the state meet.

05/08/13 – Original Draft Alignment for Track and Cross Country

Cross Country Blog Updates

**NOTE** THIS POST IS LOGGED FOR HISTORICAL PURPOSES, BUT THE ALIGNMENT NOTED IN THIS POST WAS NOT ADOPTED.

The new proposed alignment for Track and Field, which was last aligned in 2008-09, places approximately 35% of schools in Class 1A, 40% of schools in Class 2A, and the top 25% of schools in Class 3A based on enrollment figures. The new alignment was created with the aim that larger schools have an inherently higher probability of having multiple athletes in different events and should compete more among themselves (as in football), but also recognizes that many of the smaller schools do not field a full team and would not necessarily need to have as few schools in Class 1A. Documentation on the complete realignment is available on the Track and Field page at KHSAA.org. There was also recognition that trying to control travel was of primary concern, even if regions end […]

05/03/13 Track Update and State Meet Information

As schools prepare for regional competition next week, we wanted to share some information.

Regional managers have been sent information with regards to the use of the milesplit website for meet verification and to be used for entry at the regional meets. This office has no issue with using this system to handle entries, so your region may be choosing to utilize this system.  Please realize that there is a different method for entry using milesplit.  Those directions will be emailed to you by your regional manager.   You may also use the milesplit website as a supplemental tool for meet verification of your athletes.

May conflicts often occur during our spring sports championships.  Please realize that host schools and their managers are asked to avoid graduations and testing issues, but not all conflicts are avoidable.

We have had several inquiries about track participants participating without a coach present.  Just a reminder that Bylaw 20 […]

04/24/13 – NFHS Offers Free Pole Vault Course and Calendar Reminder for 2014

Track and Field Blog Updates

POLE VAULT COURSE

The NFHS released a free course for coaches, participants, and parents on Pole Vault.

Through the collaborative efforts of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), the NCAA and USA Track & Field, an online pole vault skills course has been developed for coaches and athletes and is available for free on the NFHS Coach Education Program Web site at www.nfhslearn.com.

The course, “Pole Vault: Successful Skill Development,” is designed to further advance the knowledge of coaches and pole vaulters at all levels of sport – youth, high school and college — by teaching the introductory skills and safety aspects of the pole vault.

“This course is designed for both the coach and vaulter,” said Becky Oakes, NFHS director of sports and editor of the NFHS Track and Field Rules Book. “It provides a solid foundation of the skills and techniques of the event. Through the collaborative efforts of the […]

04/18/13 Pole Vault Box Collar Padding Announcment

Track and Field Blog Updates

On April 4, 2013 the National Federation announced a rule change regarding the use of  the new ASTM approved standard for padding on pole vaulting box collars.  Due to the timing of this rule change, the implementation decision for 2013 post season has been deferred to the state associations until the full rules committee of the NFHS can meet to discuss 2013-2014 rule change. This change is not based on injury data but a desire to allow progressive protective equipment to be added at a point in time when manufacturing supply and availability make it feasible.

After reviewing the situation and looking at both the stock issues of the newer kits and the lack of equitable practice opportunities on the new equipment, the KHSAA will handle this situation as follows:

  • For the 2013, the KHSAA will not be implementing the new collar for post season regional competition. It is believed to be imperative that […]

03/25/13 – Clarification on Cold Weather Participation

Athletic Department Blog Updates

The office has received several calls from people asking about a “Cold Weather Index” to parallel the existing Heat Index rules and regulations. At the present time, such an index does not exist in terms of a policy to eliminate participation at certain temperature combinations. However, the NFHS Sports Medicine Committee, as part of its 4th edition Sports Medicine Handbook provided to the member schools, has set up best practices documentation and suggestions to dealing with extreme cold. The recommendations are posted on the KHSAA web site at /sportsmedicine/nfhs/coldweatherrecommendations.pdf Please feel free to use this valuable resource document. If you need additional copies of the Sports Medicine Handbook, contact Marilyn Mitchell (mmitchell@khsaa.org) at the KHSAA offices.

01/11/13 Track and Field 2013 Season Updates

Track and Field Blog Updates

As we begin the 2013 track season, we want to share some information with you.  The Board of Control approved the return to one turn stagger in the 800m and the 4x800m.  This was recommended by the advisory committee.

Also recommended by the committee was that the online pole vaulting certification class for coaches be required for the entire season and not just for post season.  This was also passed by the Board.  If you were able to get to the KTCCCA Conference this past weekend, as I was, we were able to meet the creator of the certification, Jan Johnson, and receive an in-person clinic on pole vaulting.  Jan was not only extremely knowledgeable  but very entertaining.   We are working on the current list to be posted on the website for verification.

A post season officials fee raise was approved.  The fee has been raised to $100 per official for post season contest […]

12/06/12 Pole Vault Certification Required for Regular Season

Track and Field Blog Updates

The Board of Control approved that the Pole Vault Certification for schools who participate in track, and have student athletes who compete in pole vaulting, be certified before the track season begins.

In the past this certification was mandatory only for post season competition.  The Board agreed that it is necessary for coaches to receive the proper certification before the season begins.

Pole Vault certification can be obtained through the  Pole Vault Certification Board in an online clinic.  This certification is good for 2 years and the cost is $35 per coach.  At least one coach must be certified for student athletes to be eligible to practice or compete.  Visit http://www.pvscb.com/ for more information.

07/15/12 – Reminder about Case BL-25-14 (Open Gym/Field), Out of Season Restrictions

Athletic Department Blog Updates

Case BL-25-14- What are the restrictions during the school year outside of the defined Limitation of Seasons (off-season) when the school’s team members are participants or school coaches are involved?
Coaching is defined as any activity by the coach at a time the athletes are participating in skills (either preparatory or specific to that sport) in a setting in which skills are taught, refined, or practiced. Coincident participation by a coach and an athlete in a sport such as a golf outing, where the coach and athlete(s) are not entered as a entry or group, or in an activity such as distance running with many runners but no direct coaching, would not specifically be considered coaching.
The “off-season” is the period during the school year for each sport or sport/activity that is outside the defined start and end dates for the sport or sport/activity as detailed in Bylaw 25. The restrictions begin on the first […]

04/2/12 Welcome

Track and Field Blog Updates

Hello all – We have had some really great weather for the track and field season.  We hope that this good fortune continues as we approach the warmer days.  Please remember that as of April 15 it is a requirement to begin your heat index recordings.   I recently sent out a rules clarification for Tournament Rule (Track and Field – p. 114 of the KHSAA handbook) – XI – C – 8:  BODY MARKINGS / TATTOOS – A permanent tattoo that is not objectionable in the judgement of an of?cial, would be allowed. A permanent tattoo that is objectionable in its content or form shall be covered. Anything non permanent including tattoos, face paint, etc. would not be legal if visible on any part of the body as it would be excessive body decoration.
We have had several questions about hair color and the legality of nontraditional colors (i.e. blue, green, pink).  After further review of the […]

Qualifying for the State Meet and Timing Notes

Track and Field Blog Updates

How Do Athletes Qualify For The State Meet?

  • In each region, the first and second place finishers in each event, automatically quality for the state meet. (a total of 14 automatic qualifiers, plus unbreakable ties, primarily in field events)
  • The next 10 best performances in each event, per class, from the state-at-large shall qualify for the state meet (a total of 10 additional qualifiers, plus unbreakable ties, primarily in field events).
  • It is very possible to have a situation where the performances in a regional meet among the two automatic advancers are less than the performance of someone who did not finish first or second, and who is not in the 10 best marks in a specific event. The two automatics from each region are protected by finish position, regardless of time or mark.

Conversion of Times for State Meet

  • All regional meets are run on tracks using FAT (Fully Automated Timing).
  • Any region time listed with an “H” beside it […]
