01/26/18 – Clarification on the Minimum Number of Diving Meets for Postseason
The KHSAA would like to address several questions and potential confusion that has come up this season in regards to the minimum number of Diving Meets an athlete must have to enter the postseason.
As is stated in the Competition Rules,
“Athletes desiring to enter the Diving competition shall have competed in Diving during at least four high school meets on a team representing a member school during the regular season. Athletes entering high school meets where only Diving is contested or meets where that school’s only participation is Diving may count that participation against the required four (4) meets and the school does not have to count that particular meet against its maximum number of meets under Bylaw 23.”
Due to several meet cancellations as a result of inclement weather this season, and other administrative issues surrounding the rule wherein meet management may have misinterpreted the provisions to our coaches due to unclear communication […]
‘Moose’ Moore’s memories of the first All ‘A’ Classic
BY MIKE FIELDS (Jan. 25, 2018)
When Stan Steidel pushed to expand the All “A” Classic into a state-wide basketball tournament almost 30 years ago, Owsley County and Jeff “Moose” Moore were just the kind of small-school team and player Steidel had in mind.
“That was the purpose,” Steidel said this week when the 2018 All “A” tipped off in EKU’s McBrayer Arena in Richmond. “It never was for any other reason but to let small schools play in a state-wide tournament.”
Owsley County had never made it to the KHSAA Sweet Sixteen, and Moore had never had the chance to show off his considerable hoops skills under the bright lights on a big stage.
Steidel’s vision became a reality in February, 1990, when the first All “A” state tournament was played in UK’s Memorial Coliseum, and Owsley County, led by Moore, reaped memories for a lifetime.
Coach Larry Sparks’ Owls became the crowd favorite […]

01/19/18 – Become an Official – Stay Connected to High School Sports
By Bob Gardner, Executive Director of the National Federation of State High School Associations and Julian Tackett, Commissioner of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.
They don’t normally make the headlines, their names are not in the box scores unless at the very bottom, and they don’t make the all-star teams, but perhaps the most essential individuals in high school sports are the contest officials.
These individuals are so important that, in fact, there would be no organized competitive sports at the high school level without the men and women who officiate these contests every day across the country. Subtract the dedicated men and women who officiate high school sports and competitive sports would no longer be organized; they would be chaotic. As many have stated, without officials, it is simply recess.
In some areas, high school officials are retiring faster than new licenses are being issued. And junior varsity, freshmen, and middle school games […]

Billy Miller’s strange 90-point night in Nancy
BY MIKE FIELDS (Jan. 17, 2018)
Forty-two years ago this week, Billy Miller had 90 points in a high school basketball game, a scoring performance that still ranks second in the KHSAA record book, a scoring performance that, to some extent, he still regrets.
“If I had it to do over again,” Miller said last week, “I probably would’ve went and sat down and finished with around 70 points. That’s what I would’ve preferred to do, because the way things turned out, a lot of people thought the game was a farce.”
January 16, 1976, was, by all accounts, a strange night of hoops in Nancy, Ky.
Miller, a 6-foot-5 senior, led Nancy to a 145-70 rout of Pine Knot in a game that didn’t really go completely sideways until the closing minutes.
According to accounts in the Lexington Herald and Louisville Courier-Journal, Nancy Coach Avery Hatfield (now deceased) let Miller stay on the court […]

01/12/18 – Board of Control Expands State Archery Format, Reviews Initial Football Realignment Parameters
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 12, 2018
During the course of its regularly scheduled meeting at the KHSAA offices on Thursday, the Board of Control approved a proposal from staff to create a new championship opportunity for girls in the sport-activity of Archery. Where previously Archery was conducted as a coed sport, awarding one overall team championship, the regional and state competitions will now award separate team championships for coed and all-girls divisions.
“With the continued growth of Archery since becoming a sanctioned sport-activity six years ago, staff was asked to look into the feasibility of creating a separate all-girls division,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “The number of female competitors in our member schools and the overwhelming support of this proposal by the advisory committee made for an easy decision to recommend.”
Staff will return to the board in February with a final outline of the […]
01/12/18 – Clarification on Regional Oil Patterns
Earlier this week, the KHSAA released the oil patterns for the upcoming regional bowling tournaments. Those oil patterns can be found in the regional instructions and on the Bowling webpage under the regional pulldowns.
After discussion with the Bowling Advisory committee, the KHSAA wanted to address and clarify the usage of the 2018 patterns prior to the tournament. For 2018, there is no explicit or implied restriction on the use of oil patterns during the season. Regional host centers have been notified to use these oil patterns for the regional competition, but the host center can do as they wish with the pattern that has been released during the remainder of the season.
As always, this is a continually evolving discussion and will be evaluated after this season to see what, if any, changes need to be made for the future.
If you have questions, please contact Sarah Bridenbaugh (sbridenbaugh@khsaa.org).

01/11/18 – Bowling Postseason Roster Deadline
In preparation for the 2018 KHSAA State Bowling Championships (February 8-9), we wanted to remind you of the opportunities available for the student-athletes of Kentucky. The KHSAA will continue to offer Unified/Adapted events to include regional and state bowling competitions. While most unified and/or adapted athletes have been participating throughout the season, we wanted to send a few reminders to everyone before the start of the postseason.
The bowling head coach or Athletic Director for each participating member school should submit student-athletes to its postseason roster on the KHSAA database for high school bowling. Postseason rosters for bowling must be submitted by Friday, January 12th at midnight. From that postseason roster, coaches can submit regional entries to the regional manager four (4) days prior to the regional tournament. A student-athlete must be listed on the roster in order to participate in the postseason.
This is also a final reminder for unified or adapted athletes. […]

High school hoops’ love affair with 3-pointer celebrates 30th anniversary
BY MIKE FIELDS (Jan. 9, 2018)
The big news broke the fourth week of March, 1987, during the 70th Boys’ Sweet Sixteen in Rupp Arena:
The National Federation of State High School Associations announced that the three-point shot part would be part of high school basketball for the 1987-88 season.
College basketball had already adopted the three-pointer for the 1986-87 season, and underdog Providence, coached by Rick Pitino and led by sharpshooter Billy Donovan, weaponized it so well it reached the NCAA Final Four.
It was no surprise that the high school game wanted to share in the “bombs away” excitement generated by the 19-foot, 9-inch stripe.
Thirty years later, it’s hard to imagine high school hoops without the three-pointer.
Just about everybody agrees it’s been a positive change for the game by giving outside shooters as much influence as inside dominators.
“Before we had the three, the game was usually a slugfest, and the […]
01/05/18-Entry Open for Title IX T63 (Survey Form)
The second phase of entry for the 2017-2018 Title IX Reports, the ability to enter the results of the student survey, is available and online at schools.khsaa.org. The entry is open and automatically calculates and confirms the response rate (80%) that is necessary.
This (2017-18) is the year for the statewide Form T63 for student interest surveys and all schools must conduct the required biennial survey of your 9th, 10th and 11th-grade students and if appropriate, enrolled 8th-grade students. The T63 form will allow for the final entry of survey results. The form has been revised and will NOT allow for entry if there is less than an 80% response rate. In addition, any entry of 0 as the interest of the students will have to be confirmed since our audit team has found it highly unlikely that no student in the entire survey audience has an interest in a specific sport or sport-activity.
If […]
