01/16/19 – Board of Control Sets Sites for State Softball and State Archery; Reviews Football Playoff Format

2018-2019 News Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 16, 2019

In its first meeting of the new year on Wednesday at the KHSAA Offices, the Board of Control finalized locations for two spring championships while addressing the future playoff structure for football and continuing its research for future revisions to state golf.

Following last year’s action by the Board to transition the state softball tournament from a double-elimination format to single elimination, create an eight-team state tournament and a semi-state round, KHSAA staff sent out information to prospective cities interested in hosting the event. After reviewing information and options from both Lexington and Louisville, the Board approved a recommendation to award the 2019 and 2020 State Softball Championships to the University of Kentucky’s John Cropp Stadium.

“The young ladies in the Commonwealth are so blessed to have great facilities interested in hosting the revised state tournament format,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “It will change many of the dynamics […]

11/15/18 – Format Change to Field Hockey Championship

Field Hockey Blog Updates

At its regular meeting at the KHSAA Offices on November 14th, the Board of Control made several adjustments to the 2019 fall sports seasons following a review of the fall championships.

The Board of Control made a slight revision to the State Field Hockey Tournament to move its tournament format in line with the other KHSAA-sanctioned team sports. Beginning in 2019, only the regional champions in Field Hockey will advance to the state tournament. Previously, Field Hockey was the only KHSAA team sport in which regional runner-ups advanced to the state tournament.

The corresponding dates for Field Hockey remain the same with the first playing date on August 19, 2019. The complete chart is on the KHSAA website at https://khsaa.org/handbook/correspondingdates/fieldhockeycorrespondingdates.pdf and once championship dates are confirmed with host venues, additional information will be distributed.

11/14/18 – Board of Control Adjusts 2019 Fall Seasons, Sets State Championship Sites

2018-2019 News Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Nov. 14, 2018

During the course of its meeting at the KHSAA Offices on Wednesday, the Board of Control made adjustments to the 2019 fall sports seasons and finalized sites for this year’s State Baseball and Swimming & Diving Championships.

For the last several years prior to 2018, the soccer, volleyball and cross country seasons all culminated on the same weekend. With volleyball moving a week earlier in 2018 to avoid a conflict in Louisville with the Breeders’ Cup, the Association had the opportunity to reevaluate the structure of its seasons while also looking to alleviate concerns with competitions on ACT test dates.

With those factors in mind, the Board approved a recommendation to set the start of the 2019 Soccer regular season to begin in NFHS Week 6 (8/11-8/17) and end with the final regular season week in NFHS Week 13 (9/29-10/5). […]

01/12/17 – Board of Control Addresses Alignment Issues, Archery Championship

2016-2017 News Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 12, 2017

During the course of its regularly scheduled meeting at the KHSAA Offices on Thursday, the Board of Control addressed alignment issues and championship details in several sports, while also approving a requested new trial pilot program for the 15th Region Tournament.

Following the consolidation of South Floyd and Allen Central High Schools, changes were needed in the basketball alignment (and subsequently the alignments in baseball, softball and volleyball) for the 15th Region. KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett attended a meeting of the Superintendents in the impacted districts on January 9 to review options related to the region. Facing challenges like an imperfect geographically aligned region and a pattern of reduced sport offerings by some schools in the region, there were few obvious non-impactful options available. With that in mind, the Superintendents expressed an interest in a multi-year pilot program where their teams would play one less […]

07/25/16 – Reminder about Heat Index Procedures – FB & FH

Athletic Department Blog Updates

While the media coverage has been great about our schools and their compliance with the mandated heat index monitoring and activity adjustment protocols, it is important that our Football and Field Hockey programs be reminded of important subtleties within the procedures.

When no additional protective equipment is being worn (i.e Football has on helmet only or Field Hockey does not have the goalie in protective gear), the threshold of 104-degree heat index is the point at which all activity must stop. But it is important as we face the hottest week of the year thus far, that all be reminded that once football adds shoulder pads or the field hockey goalie puts on gear, that threshold drops to 99 degrees. No activity can continue above a 99-degree heat index if that additional gear is being worn. The same is true for any school-based activity in baseball and softball (due to catching gear) at other times of […]

04/22/16 – Reminder Bylaw 23 Limitation of Seasons

Athletic Department Blog Updates

This is a reminder to all administrators and coaches concerning Bylaw 23, Limitation of Seasons. KHSAA staff members have received several inquiries about permitted activity,  specifically concerning fall sports and practice/tryouts for the fall. The same principle and rule would apply to any “tryout” in any sport or sport-activity that is not held during the period defined by Bylaw 23.

The first official tryout/practice date for 2016 football is July 10.  For the other fall sports/sport-activities (Soccer, Golf, Field Hockey, Volleyball, Cross Country, Competitive Cheer), the first official practice date is July 15. Only after these dates can anything mandatory be required of team members or potential team members.

Until the day following the last day of school or May 31 (whichever is earliest), coaches are permitted to provide instruction and be involved with team members (provided such is approved by the principal), but continue to be restricted in “competitive” situations with other schools unless they are […]

The following post from the KY Field Hockey Umpires Association that serves as a good refresher for all coaches and officials:

Rule 9.12: –
Players must not obstruct an opponent who is attempting to play the ball.

Guidance:

  • Players obstruct if they: back into an opponent; physically interfere with the stick or body of an opponent; or shield the ball from a legitimate tackle with their stick or any part of their body.
  • A stationary player receiving the ball is permitted to face in any direction.
  • A player with the ball is permitted to move off with the ball in any direction except bodily into an opponent, or into a position between the ball and an opponent who is within playing distance of the ball and attempting […]

09/04/15 – Reminder about Heat Index/Drones at Competition

Athletic Department Blog Updates

This notice is being sent to all member schools and specific licensed officials.

HEAT INDEX
While we have been blessed with a relatively cool summer, such is likely not to be the case this weekend and early next week. Keep in mind that the Heat Index regulations are always in place, with mandatory recording of temperatures and humidities to determine if any activity needs to change. The quick reference chart is located at http://khsaa.org/sportsmedicine/heat/heatindexchartcolor.pdf but schools as always are responsible for complete policy adherence, not just what is on the chart.

For Field Hockey, Soccer, Cross Country, Golf and even Volleyball (if played in a facility without air conditioning), all play must be suspended when the Heat Index reaches 104 degress. When the heat index is above 99, mandatory water breaks every 30 minutes for at least 10 minutes in duration are required, along with all other stipulations in the heat index guidelines.

For Football, the threshold temperature for […]

06/23/15 – Clarification on 7 v 7 games for Field Hockey

Field Hockey Blog Updates

We wanted to update you on a change in interpretation and a clarification on 7 v 7 games for Field Hockey.

It is correct that a 7v7 game is legal per the NFHS rule book and is allowed during preseason and regular season play. After be asked by several schools about the 7v7 tournaments that they run, our initial interpretation was that this would only be allowed in preseason events.  After further investigation into the rules and discussion among executive staff members and with schools we realized that the rulebook does allow for 7v7 competition by rule and that this format is not only acceptable at any time during the season, but can be useful especially when starting and the growing of new programs.

With that being said, here are some items schools will also need to take into consideration when considering participation in 7v7 contest:

1) There is no change on how preseason competition (scrimmages) would need […]

09/16/14 – Clarification on skills and rules

Field Hockey Blog Updates

Suzi Stammer has asked the KHSAA to share the following information with coaches and officials. Information such as this should help the coaches when teaching and the officials when applying the rules and evaluating the skills within field hockey.

There has been some confusion surrounding the skill of air dribbling. It’s understandable because it is a newer skill which can be very effective if done properly and safely.

Here are some guidelines for you to use when a player uses an air dribble. And let me also say that it is not illegal or a foul to dribble the ball in the air.   1. Danger is always our first consideration so consider where the dribble is starting from. If the player is all by herself approaching defenders, does she keep the ball low, or is she dribbling at waist height? If she is keeping […]
