08/08/12 State Track Meet Dates Announced
The schedule for the state track meet for 2012-2013 school year is set as follows:
Friday, May 17 – 2A and Saturday, May 18 – 1A and 3A
Please be sure to add this to your school calendar. In years past we have found that schools appreciated the early announcement of these dates as spring is a busy time for all schools. The release of these dates should be instrumental to schools as they finalize their school calendars throughout the year and after the winter months.
This format is a slight change from the past two years with two classes competing on Saturday. Exact times for each class will be released at a later date. We can confirm that the Class 1A will be the early meet on Saturday and the Class 3A will be the afternoon meet.
The State Meet site will be announced when it is determined later in the fall.
07/31/12 – Boys’ Sweet 16® Championship Game Set for Sunday
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: JULY 31, 2012
2013 BOYS’ SWEET 16® CHAMPIONSHIP GAME SET FOR SUNDAY
For the first time in the 95-year history of the KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16®, the tournament championship game will be played sometime other than Saturday night.
The traditional state tournament format will undergo a transformation for the 2013 event due to potential scheduling conflicts with Rupp Arena.
“We received a request a few days ago from the University to consider other Saturday (and potentially Sunday) alternatives in the event that the final schedule for 2012-2013 necessitated the Wildcats playing at home on Saturday, March 9,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “The 2013 scheduling has been a constantly evolving challenge for a while as we had previously surrendered our contracted dates for the arena to allow UK to host the NCAA Second/Third round that year.”
The semifinals, a doubleheader that has been played on Saturday morning for more than fifty years, […]

Batters in high school softball no longer will have to make an attempt to avoid being hit by a pitch in order to be awarded first base. All rules changes were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors. Click here for more details
07/24/12 – Championship Weekend Created for Fall Sports
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: JULY 24, 2012
CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND CREATED FOR FALL SPORTS
Beginning in the fall of 2013 the first weekend of November will have a championship feel unlike any other in the Association’s 95-year history. The KHSAA Board of Control approved a measure at its July meeting to create a fall sports weekend of championships as five separate team championships will be decided on the same Saturday.
The final championship contests for volleyball, boys’ and girls’ cross country, as well as boys’ and girls’ soccer will be awarded on Nov. 9, 2013. The new series of championships will be held in week 18 of the NFHS corresponding date calendar.
The decision to create a fall weekend of champions received support for several reasons, among them the fact it cuts down on scheduling conflicts for member schools, unlike when the championships are conducted on three separate weekends. Similar events also have been […]

“It’s amazing to see the support this Hall of Fame enjoys from the people who participate in the scramble every year. We have Hall of Famers who were inducted more than 20 years ago and they still come back and play every year,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “It’s such an honor to see the new Hall of Famers introduced for the first time. It’s a great time but it’s also very humbling when you see just how much this honor means to them.”

07/15/12 – Reminder about Case BL-25-14 (Open Gym/Field), Out of Season Restrictions
Case BL-25-14- What are the restrictions during the school year outside of the defined Limitation of Seasons (off-season) when the school’s team members are participants or school coaches are involved?
Coaching is defined as any activity by the coach at a time the athletes are participating in skills (either preparatory or specific to that sport) in a setting in which skills are taught, refined, or practiced. Coincident participation by a coach and an athlete in a sport such as a golf outing, where the coach and athlete(s) are not entered as a entry or group, or in an activity such as distance running with many runners but no direct coaching, would not specifically be considered coaching.
The “off-season” is the period during the school year for each sport or sport/activity that is outside the defined start and end dates for the sport or sport/activity as detailed in Bylaw 25. The restrictions begin on the first […]

7/5/12 – Dead Period Final Days Reminder
This is not intended to accuse any specific school or system, but to issue a genuine reminder. All member school administrators would be well served to forward this to all of your coaches on record.
DEAD PERIOD REMINDER On several occasions in the last few days, we have received inquiries from individuals claiming to be parents in specific school systems, very upset that workouts were going on among team members, etc. at a time when it was supposed to be dead. A few reminders to keep all properly informed about KHSAA Bylaw 26, the Dead Period.

We wanted to remind you all that the deadline to register “on time” is midnight on June 30, 2012.
If you do not meet the “on time” registration deadline it means a couple of things:
1) you will be charges a $25 late fee to register after June 30
2) you will not be eligible for post season assignments
Uniform transition period has been extended:
Due to issues we had with the transition of our licensing policy, we decided to move our implementation of the uniform requirements back a year.
The following uniform and embroidery requirements are now accurate:
1) Embroidered logo is required for state championship officials in fall of 2012-2013, but optional at all other levels.
2) Embroidered logo is required for all postseason competition in 2013-2014, but optional during the regular season.

5/14/12 – Annual Participation List Due May 30
The KHSAA has completed the final development of the electronic participation list submission. This task, which used to take hours for some to compile and is required of each school each year, should just be a couple of clicks away for all of our schools with the exception of the eight to ten who only enroll one sex and therefore haven’t had the “pleasure” of completing the Title IX reports. The reports cannot be submitted manually and must be submitted using the online system.
For those who have completed and submitted all elements of the Title IX report, your data may need a final review, especially related to cheer, and then you should be perfectly ready to go. From our experience with the beta testers, there were some who didn’t keep a good cheer roster during the year […]
02/20/12 – Rip-It Bat
We have received the following from the NFHS
It was brought to the NFHS’s attention that some umpires have identified the Rip-It bat as being non-compliant due to the positioning of the BBCOR .50 certification mark on the taper instead of on the barrel. This was very observant of them and a correct interpretation. However, the NFHS has had discussions with the Rip-It management group about this issue and an agreement was worked out to extend to them an administrative remedy to permit their bats to be allowed in high school competition. Please share this information with your officials that the Rip-It product with the BBCOR .50 certification mark on the taper of the bat instead of the barrel is compliant with the NFHS baseball rules due to an administrative remedy.

Commissioner’s Remarks, 2011 KHSAA Annual Meeting
Commissioner’s Remarks
General Session, 2011 KHSAA Annual Meeting
When I sat down a few weeks ago with our new board president and discussed the board’s evaluation from last year and plans for the coming year, he told me he thought I might want to take a different twist during this time I have with you. I had told him of many things that I had on my mind as we go forward, and plans for some operational changes and potential regulation changes. He looked at me and said, “That’s great. But don’t just tell me, tell them. Why don’t you do that when you have the schools together?” So if you are disappointed or disillusioned with this session, I guess we can […]
2011 Annual Meeting – Proposal by Proposal
This is the second part of a two-part effort to talk about the 2011 KHSAA Annual Meeting. There are twelve proposals on the agenda this year. Seems like about the right number, but very few if any are really significant in that implementation will not be extremely difficult for the membership.
Proposal 2011 – 1 – A proposal to revise Bylaw 6 and 7 to clarify the applicability of each rule between domestic and foreign students. Let’s face it, not all transferring students fit into the cookie cutter rule and forms of yesterday. We are in the middle of a military conflict that has resulted in thousands of new citizens coming to the United States for a variety of reasons. But recently, we have seen more coming as an entire family unit. When our schools are asked to process these students, it isn’t always clear whether or […]
Annual Meeting – Every School’s Chance for Involvement!
This is a great time of year. In all areas of the state, school has started. The Friday night lights are lit up, the fields and courts are in use every night (and seems like 24 hours in some areas and schools). But then reality sets in, and its time to deal with some of the “business issues” surrounding the KHSAA. And a lot of that business is accomplished through the Annual Meeting. Truth be told, other than the championship final events and recognition ceremonies, this event is one of my favorites. Our staff gets to sit down and meet with those people in the trenches at the local schools, and talk about issues facing both groups. Our philosophies and perspectives are different, so too naturally are our opinions.I wanted to take some time with this particular blog, to talk about the proposals that will be voted on by the membership. […]
