8/29/12 – Clarification on Braced Forward/Backward Flips in Pyramid
We received a clarification from NFHS regarding braced forward/backward flips in a pyramid. In three of the four judges training sessions, the question was with regard to 2.5.7 and does each bracer have to have a separate spotter. The bracer in the middle can brace 2 flips and still be considered a separate spotter for each side. Below is an example of the question we received and at the time, it was interpreted that it would not be legal. Upon the clarification, this is permitted and legal.
8/29/12 – Clarification on Asphalt Surfaces
While conducting our Cheer Judge’s Training ….there was a slide within the NFHS Rules Clinic (including the online) ….that appeared to in conflict. Since, we have received the following interpretation from the NFHS one the Points of Emphasis with regard to surfaces:
The beginning statement “Technical skills should not be performed on concrete, asphalt, wet or uneven surfaces or surfaces with obstructions” appears to be in conflict with the next sentence which talks to single twists to a cradle or twisting during quick tosses (which would both be considered technical skills) and indicates that they are not limited grass, mats or rubberized tracks. What the paragraph is attempting to say is:
Because of the characteristics of hard surfaces like concrete and asphalt, technical skills should not be performed on these surfaces. In addition, technical skills should not be performed on wet or uneven surfaces or surfaces with obstructions as these surfaces are not […]
8/27/12 – Reminder 3 Team Districts Mandatory Seeding
This is a reminder to teams in three team districts the mandatory seeding procedure adopted by the Board of Control. There is no option to vote to use an alternate plan in a three team district. This is also addressed in the online Rules Clinic viewed by coaches. Below is the seeding procedure:
For district tournaments with three teams, the district tournament shall be seeded in accordance with the following three-team seeding regulations:
1) Each team in a three-team district is required to play the other two teams in the district in two contests each year, at mutually agreed sites. These games will produce a uniform means of ranking the teams by seed within these districts.
2) The team with the highest seed (one seed) receives a bye in the district tournament, and advances to the championship game.
3) The remaining two teams would play in the ?rst round of the district […]

8/10/12 – “Fall Ball” and Bylaw 25 Reminders
We have had several inquiries from Administrators and Coaches with regard to coaches involvement during the school year with members of their team (or other interscholastic teams within the school). These issues have been particularly brought to light with respect to baseball and softball programs.
Coaching is defined as any activity by the coach at a time the athletes are participating in skills (either preparatory or specific to that sport) in a setting in which skills are taught, refined, or practiced. Coincident participation by a coach and an athlete in a sport such as a golf outing, where the coach and athlete(s) are not entered as a entry or group, or in an activity such as distance running with many runners but no direct coaching, would not specifically be considered coaching.
The “off-season” is the period during the school year for each sport or sport/activity that is outside the defined start and […]
08/09/12 – Home Game Management
The practice of good sportsmanship is integral to conducting an interscholastic athletic contest. After reviewing past records of disqualifications and sportsmanship issues involving the KHSAA and its member schools, the KHSAA Board of Control adopted the following recommended procedures for implementation at contests in the sport of soccer. Here is the link to the document, http://khsaa.org/soccer-home-management-and-officials-duties/ With the regular season beginning on Monday the 13th, I think it is important for the School Administration and Head Coach to review the Sportsmanship recommendations in regard to providing Home Game Management. Many of you may be new to your position and therefore are not aware of this policy. We are already getting reports from Officials that have been working the pre-season scrimmages. Just today, I had a report of two schools who had made a Booster Club member the home game manager. Another school appointed the Athletic Trainer who was […]08/08/12 State Track Meet Dates Announced
The schedule for the state track meet for 2012-2013 school year is set as follows:
Friday, May 17 – 2A and Saturday, May 18 – 1A and 3A
Please be sure to add this to your school calendar. In years past we have found that schools appreciated the early announcement of these dates as spring is a busy time for all schools. The release of these dates should be instrumental to schools as they finalize their school calendars throughout the year and after the winter months.
This format is a slight change from the past two years with two classes competing on Saturday. Exact times for each class will be released at a later date. We can confirm that the Class 1A will be the early meet on Saturday and the Class 3A will be the afternoon meet.
The State Meet site will be announced when it is determined later in the fall.
08/07/12 – 2012-2013 Rosters Available to be Opened and Edited
Welcome back for the 2012-2013 School Year!

If you need to create additional users, you may do that through the athletic personnel system (http://schools.khsaa.org/school_personnel/). But DO NOT allow individuals within your school or school system to share credentials. As an athletic director level user, you have privileges within the system that are unique to your level and should not be […]
