09/17/25 – Board of Control conducts second meeting of 2025-26
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: SEPT. 17, 2025
The KHSAA Board of Control conducted its second regularly scheduled meeting of the 2025-26 academic year on Wednesday, which will continue on Thursday in Lexington, with the Board of Control voting 13-5 to adopt a shot clock for boys and girls varsity basketball beginning in the 2027-28 high school season.
Thirty-two state associations throughout the country currently use a shot clock in some manner, and Kentucky will implement the use of a 35-second shot clock in two years. KHSAA member schools can continue getting accustomed to a shot clock for the 2025-2026, but it will not be used in postseason until 2028.
The Louisville Invitational Tournament and several other events experimented with a 35-second shot clock last season, and the reps from Louisville said it went off without any problems.
It has long been an area of discussion throughout the Commonwealth, with the board’s final decision backed by several members […]

09/04/25 – Reminder about Shortened and Interrupted Football Games
After being blessed with fantastic weather for the first two playing weeks, the forecast for this weekend leads to again issuing this reminder around football contests. This is particularly important given the vast amount of turnover in athletic administrators and coaches; a reminder about the Competition Rules is in order for Football. Interrupted games are not new and have a defined procedure for football, which has not changed in several years.
Within the NFHS football playing rules, in an emergency (such as inclement weather where advisories are placed against travel or to seek shelter), teams can mutually agree to shorten any remaining period or terminate the game at any point after the game has begun. If such termination is mutually agreed to, the game shall be recorded as the current score, and the game cannot be replaced on the schedule.
Probably the main point to keep in mind, “All involved shall remember that this situation […]

08/27/25 – LSC stadium to host KHSAA Soccer State Finals
The KHSAA will hold its 2025 boys’ and girls’ soccer finals at the Lexington Sporting Club’s (LSC) recently completed stadium at 200 Shives Drive, Lexington, KY 40509 in Lexington on Nov. 1. Working with Mayor Linda Gorton, the Urban County Council and the Lexington-Fayette County government, along with VisitLex and Bryan Brooks and the staff at the LSC, the Association has been negotiating to hold its championships at that location for more than a year.
“We try, where possible, feasible and affordable, to place our final events in our state’s prime facilities. That is especially difficult in the fall when almost all of our colleges and universities are using their facilities nearly full-time for events and activities by their own students, especially with soccer and volleyball, and with the tremendous limitations on needed space, such as parking, while school is in session,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “We are fortunate to […]

08/21/25 – Volleyball Season Updates and Reminders
Now that the first week of the 2025 girls’ volleyball season is coming to an end, we wanted to provide these updates based on early questions that have come to the office, as well as a clarification from the NFHS. These reminders will also apply to the boys’ 2026 season.
BALL SHAGGING BY OPPONENTS
This was a Point of Emphasis last year from the NFHS that dealt with sportsmanship. Opposing teams were asked not to shag balls during warm-ups. After a year review and consultation from the NFHS, our office has been advised that this practice is recommended should there be sportsmanship issues.
We had and still have, during the first week of the 2025 season, regions where it had been adhered to and where it was ignored. From here forward, it will be a local issue. Should it be deemed a sportsmanship issue, then it should be recognized; otherwise, the Association has no […]
08/21/25 – State Golf First Round Site Change (Regions 1-4)
After consultation and review with Golf House Kentucky, we feel the need to relocate the State First Round Tournament for Regions 1-4 to Calvert City Country Club for 2025.
We realize some teams may have already made efforts to play at Drake Creek Golf Club this season, but we believe this decision will result in the best experience for all participants. Hopefully, making this announcement now allows teams time to make logistical adjustments as they prepare for the state tournament. We appreciate Drake Creek’s understanding and willingness to be a part of the KHSAA State Championship, and hope to include them in the near future as the site rotation plan is expanded for future years.
Calvert City previously hosted the first round state event in 2023, and we are confident Adam Webb and his staff will do another great job with this year’s tournament, even on short notice.

NFHS Learning Center Continues to ‘Protect the Purpose’ of High School Sports, Activities
Dr. Karissa L. Niehoff, NFHS Chief Executive Officer
The difference between high school sports and all other levels of sport in the United States? Education, without a doubt. And with the focus headed in other directions at the college level the past few years, the NFHS is leading the way to ensure that high school sports remain focused on the EDUCATION in education-based sports and other activity programs.
Today, the NFHS is launching its Protect the Purpose campaign. The goal is to help high school students learn valuable lessons through participation in high school athletics and activities that prepare them for successful lives and careers. This special emphasis will help state associations, coaches, administrators and others to keep sports competitively balanced, minimize the risk of injury for students and keep programs focused on education.
While the Protect the Purpose campaign is new, the focus on education has been the […]
