09/19/25 – Final Reminder: Fall ’25 Esports Registration ends TONIGHT & Important Update on League of Legends

Athletic Department Blog Updates

As mentioned in front of our member schools that were in Lexington yesterday, 9/18, at our Annual Meeting of Schools, Registration for the Fall ’25 Esports Season ends tonight at 11:59 PM League time.

If teams do not make it in today, they will not be able to participate in this Fall Season.(full season details and reminders can be found at the following link:https://khsaa.org/09-15-25-khsaa-playvs-fall-2025-esports-registration-deadline-is-friday-9-19/)

Important Update on the Status of League of Legends for this Fall

At this time, we only have 9 teams statewide enrolled in League of Legends, which is well below the 20-team limit for a balanced season.

This probably isn’t a surprise to many, as it isn’t a Kentucky-specific issue, but part of the broader trend we’ve seen with League of Legends declining in popularity across the country.

To give students a better experience, if we do not get to the minimum of 20 today, we will have […]

2025-2026 News Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: SEPT. 17, 2025

The KHSAA Board of Control conducted its second regularly scheduled meeting of the 2025-26 academic year on Wednesday, which will continue on Thursday in Lexington, with the Board of Control voting 13-5 to adopt a shot clock for boys and girls varsity basketball beginning in the 2027-28 high school season.

Thirty-two state associations throughout the country currently use a shot clock in some manner, and Kentucky will implement the use of a 35-second shot clock in two years. KHSAA member schools can continue getting accustomed to a shot clock for the 2025-2026, but it will not be used in postseason until 2028.

The Louisville Invitational Tournament and several other events experimented with a 35-second shot clock last season, and the reps from Louisville said it went off without any problems.

It has long been an area of discussion throughout the Commonwealth, with the board’s final decision backed by several members […]

09/04/25 – Reminder about Shortened and Interrupted Football Games

Football Blog Updates

After being blessed with fantastic weather for the first two playing weeks, the forecast for this weekend leads to again issuing this reminder around football contests. This is particularly important given the vast amount of turnover in athletic administrators and coaches; a reminder about the Competition Rules is in order for Football. Interrupted games are not new and have a defined procedure for football, which has not changed in several years.

Within the NFHS football playing rules, in an emergency (such as inclement weather where advisories are placed against travel or to seek shelter), teams can mutually agree to shorten any remaining period or terminate the game at any point after the game has begun. 09/3/25 – Reminder: Fall 2025 Esports Registration Deadline is 9/19/25

Athletic Department Blog Updates

Before we get into our fall seasonal reminders, we wanted to let everyone know that, during our summer review meeting with PlayVS, we found out that Kentucky ranked third in the nation last year, behind Georgia and New Mexico, in terms of State Esports Participation!

In addition, Fayette County Public Schools was voted PlayVS’ School District of the Year for the 2024-2025 school year!

As far as reminders, the most pressing is our Registration Deadline

The deadline to register (and therefore, participate) in the Fall ’25 KHSAA/PlayVS Esports Season is Friday, September 19 @ 11:59 PM League Time.

Please get your teams registered and onboarded as soon as possible so we can make certain that we have enough participation in each of our seven titles to keep them in the KHSAA State Championship League – including our new Fall ’25 3v3 Title, Street Fighter 6.

New schools – you still have plenty of time! […]

Athletic Department Blog Updates

The nomination process for the Midway University/KHSAA Male and Female Student Athlete-of-the-Year among Golf participants for 2025-2026 is now open.

This award is based on athletic and academic achievement as well as community service and leadership. The link to the application contains additional criteria and a form to nominate one participant from each 2025-2026 team. Nominations must come from a member school, but can be submitted by an administrator, guidance counselor, or coach. Nominations may only be submitted online at https://khsaa.org/ge35-midway-university-khsaa-female-student-athlete-of-the-year-nomination-form/.

The winner will be announced early in the postseason and recognized at an awards event at Midway University in early summer 2026. From the winners selected for each KHSAA championship, one student-athlete will be selected as the 2025-2026 Midway University/KHSAA Student-Athlete of the Year announced at the event. All individual winners will also receive their recognition awards at that time.
