INFORMATION UPDATE

  • Apologies in advance for the delay in getting this information to you. Everything was ready just after midnight but there was one single non-submitted score that delayed finalizing everything, including tiebreakers, etc. That score wasn’t received until early this morning. But all should be accurate now.

OFFICIALS AVAILABILITY AND GAME SCHEDULING

  • THANK YOU to those schools that cooperated and either voluntarily scheduled on Thursday or Saturday. We could not manage this week without cooperation.
  • From this point, ANY Friday night game will only have five officials. If you desire 7, select Thursday or Saturday.
  • Most of the matchups were determined more than a week ago, and thanks to the nearly 65% of you who got your information submitted this week.

PLAYOFF INSTRUCTIONS

  • Though the instructions have been on the KHSAA website for several weeks, some are just now realizing they need them.

10//24/23- Football Playoffs Update

Football Blog Updates

The following is to update schools regarding the 2023 Football Playoffs, with particular emphasis on Rounds 1-4.

OFFICIALS AVAILABILITY AND GAME SCHEDULING

Last week, we held a conference call with our assigners, with the following data gleaned from that call.

  • Clearly, they feel comfortable with assigning, at most, between 85 and 88 crews for the first round if all contests had five officials. We have 95 games currently scheduled.
  • Simply put, we will need to have some schools play on Thursday night or Saturday night if we are going to be able to ensure that full crews of officials are assigned.
  • And be mindful that last year, we had 20 schools desire a full crew of seven officials for the first round.
  • Simply put, the supply/demand equation is not balanced right now.
  • We have around 80 first-year officials and for the most part, the assigners are not as comfortable with those officials in […]

Cross Country Blog Updates

The regional results for Cross Country and the 2023 KHSAA State Qualifiers have been posted on the KHSAA website.

Please be advised that changes may occur as coaches and officials have an opportunity to double-check both the performance list and the roster by school for accuracy.  An email will be sent once all changes have been made and final performance lists and lane assignments are available.

Each school should review their student-athletes and let us know immediately of any necessary changes (i.e. misspelling of names, incorrect grade, etc.) by emailing us at xc@khsaa.org. It is important that you send corrections to xc@khsaa.org to ensure all parties are aware of the changes.

The deadline for corrections is Monday, October 23 at 9:00 a.m. (Eastern).

For new coaches: Once a student-athlete (or team) is entered into the region they are automatically entered into the state meet if they qualify. Even if your team did not qualify, you may […]

Cheer Blog Updates

This is a reminder that all KHSAA Cheer and Dance Coaches (Head and Assistant, paid or unpaid) must complete the NFHS Music Copyright Course “Understanding Copyright and Compliance”. This course is free and 100% online and is required whether or not a team competes in KHSAA competition. This course from the NFHS is geared toward music teachers, spirit coaches (cheer and dance) and school administrators. Understanding Copyright and Compliance is available through the NFHS Learning Center at www.NFHSLearn.com.

The course explores copyright laws and how those laws impact the interscholastic community and the course was produced with the assistance of NAME (National Association for Music Education) and USA Cheer. It also expands on topics such as fair use, public domain, copyright infringement penalties and much more. Spirit squads, as well as Dance teams, are increasingly met with copyright infringement claims and this course is a tool to assist cheer and dance coaches in education on […]

10/17/23- Wrestling Schools Reminded about Needed Information, Girls’ Wrestling; Wrestling Survey Results

Athletic Department Blog Updates

ROSTER UPDATE

Member schools are reminded that if you are going to compete in Girls’ Wrestling in competition against other girls’ wrestling teams, it is imperative that the School Control Panel be updated to indicate that you will be doing such. Much information will need to be gathered from those schools as postseason logistics are formulated. It is the staff’s intention to have a model near final to report this data to the Board of Control at their November meeting as this first year of an implemented championship in girls’ wrestling is executed. Such things as qualifying rounds and sites cannot be determined until there is a realistic estimate of those schools competing.

In addition, schools are reminded that (per the notice earlier this month at https://ly.khsaa.org/ndaa), the rosters for girls’ competition and boys’ competition are separate. In the case of a girl who competes in girls-only competition AND boys/coed competition, be sure they […]

10/06/23- Football Playoff Schedule Request and Football RPI Clarification and Clean-up

Football Blog Updates

FOOTBALL PLAYOFF SCHEDULING REQUEST

As teams start qualifying for the playoffs, we are asking for schools’ help in scheduling, especially in the first round. As all are aware, our supply of officials is not at the levels we were during the early 2000s when we had abundant numbers. Many of our associations, including some of our larger groups, have struggled to return to even their pre-COVID legals in terms of numbers. As such, staffing that first round which is always difficult, is likely very problematic, especially if all teams insist on trying to play on the same Friday night. Our assigners are very conscious of the need to only use those that feel are “playoff ready”, and really need your help on these dates.

There are distinct advantages to playing on Thursday or Saturday that negate the usual concerns about different preparation weeks, etc. Teams seem to be very adept at moving games during fall […]

10/03/23 – KHSAA Hires Longtime Official Scott Bottoms as Supervisor of Officials Licensing

2023-2024 News Releases

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: OCT. 3, 2023

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association introduced the newest addition to its staff on Tuesday with the hiring of Supervisor of Officials Licensing Scott Bottoms.

“Scott Bottoms brings an abundance of experiences to this newly created position within the Association” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “He excelled on the courts, and frankly, in the business world, but more importantly, he brings the right demeanor and enthusiasm to the position.

“He will be vital in advancing our implementation of several new initiatives to help garner more officials and retain many of those having second thoughts about continuing with today’s contest environment,” Tackett said. “And though the KHSAA does not employ officials or supervise their game-by-game activities, we will be able to use his expertise to streamline processes and make a concerted effort to ensure no contests fail to be played due to a lack […]

9/28/23- Wrestling Class Survey Issued for Member Schools

Athletic Department Blog Updates

The survey must be received by the close of business on October 12, 2023.
