01/28/13 – Board of Control Approves Basketball Region I, Statewide Wrestling Realignments
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 28, 2013
The KHSAA Board of Control approved new alignments for Basketball Region I and all eight Wrestling regions during its January meeting at the KHSAA office on Monday.
Following the consolidation of schools in McCracken County, KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett and area Board of Control members met with representatives from the first region in Mayfield. With all Region I schools in attendance, the feedback from the meeting was to realign within the region, and not bring additional teams into the region. Three options for realignment were presented following the meeting in Mayfield. On Monday, the Board voted to approve Option A for the 20013-14 season (detailed below), which will also be applied to baseball, softball, soccer and volleyball:
District 1 – Carlisle County, Fulton City, Fulton County, Hickman County
District 2 – Ballard Memorial, Graves County, Mayfield
District 3 – Community Christian, McCracken County, Paducah Tilghman, St. Mary
[…]1/28/13 – Freshmen Match Play Scoring Adjusted / Region 1 Alignment
The KHSAA Board of Control, at its January meeting, made a revision in the volleyball match format for freshmen contests. Beginning with the 2013-14 school year (2013 season), freshmen match format will mirror junior varsity. Match play will be best two (2) sets of three (3) to 21, rally score, with all sets to 21. Member schools may agree in advance during regular season play on alternate scoring formats, but may not exceed two of three sets to 21.
There was no change to junior varsity or varsity match format/scoring.
Region 1 Volleyball Alignment
The Board of Control also approved the alignment of teams in Region 1 to begin with the 2013-2014 school year due to the consolidation of Reidland, Heath and Lone Oak to form McCracken County. These decisions are never easy and seldom unanimously accepted, but this one was made smoother by the great cooperation and feedback from the member schools in Region […]

9/14/12 – Reminder Volleyball Match Scoring Options
It has been reported to the office that there is some level of confusion and/or possible miscommunication among coaches and administrators regarding volleyball match length. For that reason, I think it is worth reiterating a few things about volleyball matches and scoring.
Though the NFHS playing rules call for volleyball matches to be best 3 of 5 sets to 25 (with the 5th game to 15), which is the format to be used in postseason play, the Board of Control approved provisions that would allow for schools, by mutual agreement, to continue playing 2 of 3 sets to 25 during the regular season.
In addition, the Board of Control approved MANDATORY warm-up time parameters (shortening previous practices with regard to warm-up) and required formats for non-varsity matches. All of these changes were designed to constrain the overall match time, particularly if schools played the NFHS 3 of 5 scoring and a triple header was scheduled.

8/27/12 – Reminder 3 Team Districts Mandatory Seeding
This is a reminder to teams in three team districts the mandatory seeding procedure adopted by the Board of Control. There is no option to vote to use an alternate plan in a three team district. This is also addressed in the online Rules Clinic viewed by coaches. Below is the seeding procedure:
For district tournaments with three teams, the district tournament shall be seeded in accordance with the following three-team seeding regulations:
1) Each team in a three-team district is required to play the other two teams in the district in two contests each year, at mutually agreed sites. These games will produce a uniform means of ranking the teams by seed within these districts.
2) The team with the highest seed (one seed) receives a bye in the district tournament, and advances to the championship game.
3) The remaining two teams would play in the ?rst round of the district […]

08/15/12 – Reminder about Rosters and Stats
Now that contests have been completed and individual statistics can be entered, there are steps to be taken to open and initialize rosters. This step was clearly detailed in the August 7 blog entry available at http://khsaa.org/87-2012-2013-rosters-available-to-be-opened-and-edited/. Your AD will need to follow these steps prior to the entry of new players or editing of the current roster. All of this has to be done before stats can be entered on a game-by-game basis.
The first week of volleyball statistics will be published on Thursday, Aug. 23.
The first week of soccer statistics will be published on Thursday, Aug. 30
The first week of football statistics will be published on Thursday, Sept. 6
07/24/12 – Championship Weekend Created for Fall Sports
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: JULY 24, 2012
CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND CREATED FOR FALL SPORTS
Beginning in the fall of 2013 the first weekend of November will have a championship feel unlike any other in the Association’s 95-year history. The KHSAA Board of Control approved a measure at its July meeting to create a fall sports weekend of championships as five separate team championships will be decided on the same Saturday.
The final championship contests for volleyball, boys’ and girls’ cross country, as well as boys’ and girls’ soccer will be awarded on Nov. 9, 2013. The new series of championships will be held in week 18 of the NFHS corresponding date calendar.
The decision to create a fall weekend of champions received support for several reasons, among them the fact it cuts down on scheduling conflicts for member schools, unlike when the championships are conducted on three separate weekends. Similar events also have been […]
07/15/12 – Reminder about Case BL-25-14 (Open Gym/Field), Out of Season Restrictions
Case BL-25-14- What are the restrictions during the school year outside of the defined Limitation of Seasons (off-season) when the school’s team members are participants or school coaches are involved?
Coaching is defined as any activity by the coach at a time the athletes are participating in skills (either preparatory or specific to that sport) in a setting in which skills are taught, refined, or practiced. Coincident participation by a coach and an athlete in a sport such as a golf outing, where the coach and athlete(s) are not entered as a entry or group, or in an activity such as distance running with many runners but no direct coaching, would not specifically be considered coaching.
The “off-season” is the period during the school year for each sport or sport/activity that is outside the defined start and end dates for the sport or sport/activity as detailed in Bylaw 25. The restrictions begin on the first […]

5/14/12 – NFHS Libero Uniform Changes – 2016
Here’s an update on the NFHS Libero Uniform Rule Change effective 2016. This will be shared in the NFHS/KHSAA Volleyball Rules Clinic this fall as well.
From the NFHS:
The new volleyball uniform requirements for a solid-colored uniform top and the implementation date of July 1, 2016, are outlined in Rule 4-2-2-NOTE of the 2012-13 NFHS Volleyball Rules Book. There likely are schools in your state that are purchasing uniforms for next season that will still be used in 2016 and, therefore, must meet the new rule. To assist the state associations in working with the schools to purchase legal uniforms, you may go to the following link (http://www.nfhs.org/Volleyball/) for detailed information regarding the solid-colored uniform top.
5/14/12 – 2012-13 Scoring/Warm-Up
To kick off the Volleyball blog ….I wanted to again share the changes for Volleyball approved by the KHSAA Board of Control back in January. While this was sent out to Principals, Athletic Directors, Coaches and Assigners …I have gotten a few questions so hopefully this will assist you. Here is what was approved. We will review this in the Rules Clinic as well.
Regular Season Varsity Play – Standard format will be best 3 of 5 sets, rally scoring, with the fifth set being to 15 per the NFHS Rules Book. Individual contests, by advance mutual agreement of the competing schools, may be played in best 2 of 3 sets. Member schools may agree in advance during regular season tournaments, on alternate scoring formats. In all cases, whatever format is used, each match shall count as one against the overall limit of matches contained in Bylaw 25.
